Geary: New mail client [+ Installation on Debian]

Geary is intended to be a Mail Client light for Gnome, and if I'm not mistaken, it was born from the union of Yorba with the project Elementary.

Geary it still lacks many functionalities. For now it can only be used with accounts of IMAP de Google y Yahoo, although we can define custom data in the option "Others". It still does not have support for attachments, you can only configure one email account, and we do not have the option to search for messages, that is, it is still a very basic application. Something that I did like is that the messages are shown in the form of a conversation.

It also limits us a bit, especially when writing a message.

For now we can only count on the following settings:

  • Choice of three types of fonts.
  • Choice of three font sizes.
  • Basic text format (bold, underline, strikethrough, etc).
  • Support for links.
  • Button to delete the text Format.
  • Bleeding.
  • Spelling correction.

Installation on Debian

If even with these limitations, we want to test it in Debian, we must do the following:

1.- We open a terminal and put:

$ sudo aptitude install libunique-3.0-0
$ wget http://ppa.launchpad.net/yorba/ppa/ubuntu/pool/main/g/geary/geary_0.1.0-1~precise1_i386.deb
$ wget https://launchpad.net/~sgringwe/+archive/beatbox/+files/libsqlheavy0.1-0_0.1.1-2_i386.deb
$ sudo dpkg -i *.deb

With this, what we do is download the application and some libraries in the repositories of Debian Testing, they do not have the version recommended by Geary and later we install them.

Installation on Ubuntu

En Ubuntu the thing is simpler. We open a terminal and put:

  • sudo add-apt-repository ppa: yorba / ppa
  • sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install geary

It should be noted that Geary does not yet have support for HUD ni Unity in general.

If i wasn't alone IMAP I would use it without problems. I've always wanted Thunderbird have an interface like this, but hey, no way.

    I remember the elementary project was working on its own mail client, Postler. I imagine geary will follow that line. I'm glad about this development, because we need a light and functional alternative to the heavy thunderbird. Currently I use claws-mail, very light and with multiple extensions that make it very configurable, however, in visual section it leaves a lot to be desired, it is very "surly" it lacks the option to show messages in conversation mode, fundamental for me, and reading emails in html needs extensions that do not convince me either.

      Not exactly, in the Elementary project they want to use the Geary backend and their own Front-end with Postler. If you read his blog you can find it, both teams are very close.

      Same! At this point I don't see the point. I check everything online.

        Having all the emails on your own computer ... I don't know, but it's more comfortable for me, even safer 🙂

          Within a company, a mail client is useful, for example:

          If at a certain moment the internet connection fails, a user wants to see their email, of course they will be able to see the ones they downloaded previously from their preferred client, while if they were to view the emails by browser, they will not be able to do not connect.

        The meaning is in how you use it.

    If Geary is another of the Elementary project applications, Postler will be left behind and this will be the email client on Luna, however I would consider it more of a beta and testing candidate at this time. Hopefully by the time Luna is released (according to rumors it may be ready for the Ubuntu 12.10 release) it will be much more mature and functional, although of course, I doubt that Thunderbird will change 🙂

    Hello everyone,

    I dont know if is offtopic But if it is, tell me, please. Some time ago I wondered if there would be an open source mail service (not a client like Thunderbird or Geary)? I thought about it when I got a bit picky with google. I changed my default browser (www.ddg.gg), I changed my browser to chromium (I don't know if it's a lot, but at least it's totally free) but when I got to the email I didn't find a free alternative.

    I think it's great but I don't change my icedove for anything, it helps me to work, troll, spam, etc.

    XD

    More than a Mail application, I would like one that includes a calendar and that can synchronize with Google Calendar / Google Tasks: SY if it is light, better ...

    Thanks for the guide, I'm looking for a client for Crunchbang.

    I suggest that if you need to download files you create a directory for those files, because imagine running
    sudo dpkg -i *.deb

    And the user has not only that pair of Debs at home 😛

    Regards!
