GeckoLinux launches its first version based on openSUSE Leap 15

The development team behind GeckoLinux has released information on the release of the new version of their system, the first based on OpenSUSE Leap 15. 

For those unfamiliar with GeckoLinux, it is a Linux distribution based on the OpenSUSE operating system focused on common users, providing a very polished and simple experience. GeckoLinux is available in two different branches, the Static branch, based on OpenSUSE Leap, and the Rolling branch based on OpenSUSE Tumbleweed, both with the option to choose many of the most popular Linux graphical environments.

As you can read in the announcement, “GeckoLinux Static was based on the OpenSUSE Leap enterprise distribution with the inclusion of proprietary packages from the Packman project,” on the other hand “GeckoLinux Rolling is based on the secure OpenSUSE Tumbleweed distribution with the inclusion of proprietary packages of the Packman project. " 

What's new in GeckoLinux Stable 150.180607 and Rolling 999.180607 

With the latest releases, GeckoLinux Stable 150.180607 and Rolling 999.180607, the developers modified added the latest versions of the most famous Linux environments. For example, in GeckoLinux Rolling 999.180607 is available for download with GNOME 3.28, KDE Plasma 5.12.5 LTS, Cinnamon 3.8.3, MATE 1.20, Xfce 4.12, and LXQt 0.12. 

Based on the recently released OpenSUSE Leap 15, GeckoLinux Stable 150.180607 comes with GNOME 3.26, KDE Plasma 5.12.5 LTS, Cinnamon 3.6.7, MATE 1.20, Xfce 4.12, and LXQt 0.12.0. Inside we find the Linux kernel 4.12.14 while the Rolling version uses the Linux kernel 4.16.12. Both branches come with Firefox 60 and LibreOffice 6.0.4. 

The two editions also share preconfigured repositories for additional software that provide the user with applications from companies such as Google, Microsoft or Nvidia. GeckoLinux can also be downloaded without a graphical environment for those who want to install an environment on their own.
