The wait is finally over. After two years of development, we already have with us version 2.8 of the most popular Image Editor of GNU / Linux: Gimp.
I was checking a few minutes ago on the website and they have not made an official announcement yet, however, you can download this new version from the Gimp FTP. In GimpUsers.com they have made an excellent post (In English) explaining the new features, which are not few. Between them?
- The long-awaited Single Window Mode option (although it is optional).
- Support for multiple columns.
- Editing text without the popup dialog with style options: D.
- Option to create Groups of Layers and the possibility of Mixing / Uniting them.
- Brushes can be rotated.
- Improvements in tools and their appearance.
- You can calculate the pixels [(200 + 20 + 20) * 2/3 = 173]: O.
- Image palette exportable to CSS, PHP, Java, Python or plain text.
- Tool windows can be customized.
- New keyboard shortcuts.
- New basic gradients available.
- The color curves show the RGB channels in the background.
- Support for JPEG2000 and RAW import in 16 bit.
- Integration with GEGL.
- Sliders (with the cursor) to set dimensions on tools.
- Screenshots of complete websites using Webkit.
- Option to export to PDF.
- Support for multiple pages in PDF.
- New tool: Cage Transform [Watch video].
- Improved support for Wacom graphics tablets.
- More, much more ... 😀
Without a doubt, I think the wait has been worth it. Just looking at this extensive list of changes makes me want to try it out.

Excellent news and in my opinion much more important than the release of any distribution. Gimp is one of the most emblematic programs of Free Software.
Excellent news and great work from the developers. Without a doubt, a great program for Free Software.
Greetings.
Yujuuuuu !! We already have version 2.8 with a single window !!
New tool: Cage Transform <- people will now be able to remove their belly from their photos in front of the mirror with free software! 😀 (?)
HAHAHA!!
HA HA HA JA Exactly. They may say "that photo is whined!"
gimp 2.8, it can't be true, it must be an illusion xD
Hello, could you help me to install linux-pae in arch because I get an error when installing it and well this because when trying to install 64-bit arch in my lap xps15z it does not work when restarting it after installing the base system, the keyboard does not work for me so I chose to install the 32-bit version, in fact, neither ubuntu 64-bit works for me and all this so that it recognizes the 8gb of ram memory please help
Nice news.
Not for me ... unfortunately I updated GIMP Through the Update Manager:
1.-I installed a series of things and apparently updated GIMP
2.-But oh, surprise! ... he removed it and now I no longer have any version of GIMP
3.-And besides, now I can't even install it ...
It is not the first time this has happened to me, a few months ago I had to re-install the whole system again just to be able to install GIMP, but this time I am not going to do it nor do I want to waste my time ...
Aptitude handles dependencies better than apt-get and personally would not have updated from a ppa.
I don't think it is necessary to reinstall the system, removing the packages that cause problems and then reinstalling gimp.
It should be simple.
Thank you very much for responding.
First of all I want to clarify that my profession is graphic design and I don't know much about operating systems -like 99% of the graphic designers I know- and all I did was activate an update that is not supposed to be problematic. Otherwise the command apt-get install gimp is the one suggested on the official website of GIMP
How do I find out what those damaged packages are?
It should be simple ... but this is Linux.
Show me the log that gives you when you open it, see if I can do something myself
Thank you for your support.
I can't open it, the damn update just uninstalled the GIMP I had, it did not install the new one and it does not let me install the new version due to dependencies.
Are you using any PPA?
Yes, this: otto-kesselgulasch / gimp
Sure, that's the problem.
On the Linux Mint forums there is a person with the same problem.
One of the answers says that there are dependency problems (what you tell me) and that they are serious.
My advice is to wait for it to be officially included in the Linux Mint repositories, if it is not in the repositories it is for something
Fortunately… FORTUNATELY... I do not depend on GIMP for production jobs -The fact that GIMP it doesn't work on me Linux Mint… does not have
pricemother, pay my licenses for the parcel of AdobeIn view of the above, it costs much less. For everything else is Master Card-.Thank you a thousand for your support Courage, I will finally wait for the Linux Mint Maya and already installed everything new I will include again GIMP. Thanks a thousand again.
So I mentioned that I would not have updated from a ppa.
Just uninstall everything related to gimp (even in the terminal capture there are packages that cause conflict), for that it is easy with synaptic (I don't know if it is installed on linux mint), then remove the ppa, reload the repos and in the end reinstall gimp.
The apt-get thing is because in recent ubuntu no aptitude is installed anymore (it is installed separately if you want), that's why the gimp page.
A bull past ... it seems, then, that updating from a PPA it's like the box of chocolates gump: you do not know what is going to touch you.
No, it is not that easy. If I uninstall libgtk2.0 I load the desk ... among other things sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
As my last message to this lost cause.
Install aptitude (apt-get install aptitude)
Then: aptiude update && aptitude safe-upgrade && aptitude update && aptitude full-upgrade
Have if the above repairs the dependencies that ruined the gimp ppa, if not use ppa purge (I have used it for a long time, I think with ubuntu tweak), to return to the original packages of the distro (the ones that I update the gimp ppa) .
And finally reinstall gimp.
That is missing from apt-get / aptitude, when using other repos one can choose from where to install a certain package as in openSUSE's yast2 / zypper. Or if you have the option, I haven't come across it.
Thanks a thousand Courage y sieg84 for your support.
I'm going to try what you propose sieg84, to see how it works.
Thanks a thousand, again.
You have been impatient. GIMP developers recommend installing the stable version from the official repositories. In no time it will be available for Ubuntu. You just have to wait for the update manager to notify you. A newbie can't mess with experimental repositories.
Also, if you saw the repository page you would read this:
That's what I did ... didn't you read it ?:
If Update Manager It warns me of this update, it is assumed that I do not have to be reviewing and / or reading whether or not it can cause problems ... I understand that if I install it through the console.
What's more, I didn't even know that this new version already existed until the Update Manager he warned me, but anyway ... what Linux not bad, novice users are finally the ones
pend ** osMaybe I've misunderstood you before. I think you have installed the ppa from:
https://launchpad.net/~otto-kesselgulasch/+archive/gimp
Installing that repository activates it automatically. The update manager looks for updates in all your active repositories (whether official or not). If it happened the way I wrote it… Yes, it's your fault. That repository must be a forbidden fruit for the uninitiated.
It is not that, what happens is that modern technologies are for young people
I understand that an unpleasant event can make a person angry. Just like I get angry when I trip over a chair and hurt my leg. I curse the chair maker and the tree it came from, but I know it was my fault for not looking where I am. Nor can we blame Linux or GIMP for something the user has done wrong. Once, using Internet Explorer, I accidentally installed malware. It changed my home page and opened pop-ups left and right. The fault was not Windows 98 or IE. I was responsible, I never made the same mistake again.
In linux chakra we have it already 🙂
Sip through the bundles, good for gimp, a small step but a great advance for what is coming from now on in gimp.
There are no "forbidden fruits" of knowledge. The path of learning is a path of trial and error, whoever stands still for fear of "breaking something" never advances. Pretending to "prohibit" touching something and keeping it "only for connoisseurs" is elitist behavior.
If those who "know" have something to contribute to those who try and make mistakes, as in any way of knowledge, fine; If, on the other hand, helping others bothers you, it is better to shut up and do not contribute anything before trying to restrain them.
