[GIMP tutorial] Creating an image with a «Bokeh» effect

Hello! this is my first contribution as a writer of this blog, motivated after reading the moving entrance from KZKG ^ Gaara and thinking «it would be nice to see some posts about GIMP" I told myself : "why not?»…. Yes, it does not sound like a very serious reason, but something is something in the community, don't you think? へ ( ゚ ▽ ゚) No

The effect "bokeh»Is a resource used in photography to give an aesthetic blur to the background or certain objects in the image. This stylized effect is also great in terms of digital design and we can create it using GIMP, the free software image manipulation tool par excellence.

This tutorial is a short example of how to create the pattern and create the image with that effect.

To make an image with a bokeh effect, we first create a 150 × 150 image, with a transparent background.
1. We use the elliptical selection tool by checking the box "fixed: aspect ratio" in the properties section, and we mark a circle the size of the image.

2. Then with the fill tool, we color the circle white and then go to the "select" tab and choose the option "shrink [shrink]" and give it the value of 4

3. After that we proceed to delete the interior section by pressing delete.

4. Again, we choose the “fill” tool, with opacity at 50% in properties, we color the interior and the pattern is ready 😀

5. we keep in ~ / .gimp-2.8 / brushes giving it the name and description you want. (you will most likely have to close and reopen the GIMP so we can use the pattern.)

6. Once the pattern is ready, we proceed to create a new image of the desired size, in this case 1280 × 800, with the desired background color.

7. Now we make a gradient with the “blend” tool selecting “in front of transparent” in the options. Selecting the color we want

8. Next we create a new layer from the menu "layer" → "new layer", transparent and we will use it to create the first layer of "lenses".

9. We select the “brush” tool and the following is to choose our pattern in the properties, then in the “dynamics” section we choose “Dynamics Random”, this will make the size and pressure random.

10. now to create some circles

11. As the layer created is the lowest level of lenses, we go to "filters" → "Blur [blur]" → "Gaussian blur"

there we give the value (between 10 -15 is fine) and we accept.

with that we already have the first layer done. The joke of this image is to create layers at the rate that the last layer created is the most defined, the first layer we created we gave a blur between 10 - 15, the next we gave between 5-7 and the last no blur. )

* We repeat from step 8 according to the levels we want.

For this example I created 2 more layers, like this, the lower one is the most blurred, the middle one is slightly out of focus and the upper one without blur.

At the end we select the base layer (the one with the gradient) and select the “Blend” tool, opacity at 60%, shape: radial and add some background highlights (or shadows).

in the end it should look something like this:

I hope you liked it and that it is useful, greetings! (^ _ ^) ノ

I get up from my chair and applaud you. First of all, it's nice that another lady writes in DesdeLinux, it's been a while since anyone did it; second that, wow, articles on graphic design or image manipulation are always undoubtedly our weak side (me a programmer, Alejandro and Hernesto server administrators, etc...) the truth is that I was impressed while I fixed a couple of minor details in the post. I hope you do many more articles around this topic, it would be great to have you on the staff.

Very good, when I browse Devianart and see thousands of wallpapers like "bokeh" I wondered how they did it. I congratulate you. Cheers!

Very good tutorial, so I can make my own KDE background with whatever logos I want.

    Greetings and thanks.

WOW the truth whenever I see a graphic design tutorial I stay 😮
Like nano and Iván I plan to use it to make a good wallpaper.
    Greetings and be good

Wordless O_O ... I thought about using "wonderful" or "great" ... but, it still wouldn't do it justice ...

It really is a pleasure to have you here sharing your knowledge, as you already said dwarf, he is a programmer, I am a system and network administrator, and elav the same as me (although he knows how to work more with Inkscape).
It's a real pleasure to be able to read articles related to image processing, it really does! 😀

And not only that, you don't know how nice it is to know that you found my post moving, it fills me with pride and satisfaction. (I.e.

Nothing, what a welcome to the team 😉
If you need something or have doubts, I imagine you know how to contact us 🙂

    Very good!
GIMP is my favorite program and the truth is that what you mention is really very good.
    Thanks for sharing.
It is also nice to have a feminine touch in Linux.

Yes, it is curious that both Helena and Tina write about Gimp, it is really great because that is precisely one of the weak points of the site 😀

Above! ... not to mention, Linux does have a female presence! 😀

Thanks for the tutorial, very well explained. Special for those of us who like to "play" with Gimp. Slds.

Hello, the tutorial is very good. I ask you a question: does anyone know what the font of the GIMP logo is called? (If you don't know what I'm talking about, it's the font that GIMP says in the first image of this tutorial). I would appreciate your responses!

    1.    helena_ryuu said

mmm the truth I used a vector of the gimp logo, the one that looks the most is wide-awake -> http://www.dafont.com/wide-awake.font (It is the most similar that I look at, hopefully it will serve you. 😀

      1.    Javier said

Thank you helena_ryuu for responding. The truth is, it is very similar. Thank you!!!

Very good, just yesterday I got into Gimp for the first time to try to make black and white with some color like in the movie Sin City. See if I can keep practicing with this.

Well… Helena Apparently you've already won over the public here in just 1 post, incredible HAHA 😀

  18.   helena_ryuu said

hahaha thank you very much everyone! I really appreciate your comments and support, I'm glad you liked it (^ _ ^) [how modest I am Jojojojojojo] xD the truth is I'm not even close to a professional in the gimp, but I know my stuff , I have also used inkscape, I really like what has to do with the graphic section apartado and the customization, so I will continue with some more posts.
    cheers!

    1.    KZKG ^ Gaara said

I will continue with some more posts

      Nice! 😀

It does not matter if you think that some posts (or ideas that you have for posts) are too basic things, it does not matter and publish them haha, for those who know how to work with Gimp or Inkscape there are many things that you consider simple or basic, but for the rest of mortals are impossible LOL !!.

@ KZKG ^ Gaara は い 。。。 xD Ah! One thing, I don't know how to make the arch icon appear in my comments, tux is great but…. arch is cooler xDD any ideas?

@rube I have a vague idea of what you say (the effect without city) is simple, if we use «desaturate» and add another layer ... but I'd better leave it for another post 😀

    1.    KZKG ^ Gaara said

HAHAHAHAHA you won't say that my nickname is weird right? … LOL.
Simple, you must change the UserAgent of your browser: https://blog.desdelinux.net/tips-como-cambiar-el-user-agent-de-firefox/

In the agent chain you put:
      Firefox/16.0 ArchLinux (X11; rv:16.0.1) Gecko/20120721 Firefox/16.0

And voila, the icon like me will appear here: https://blog.desdelinux.net/2-cursores-punteros-de-archlinux-para-kde/#comment-3314

I do say so, your nickname is weird ...

        1.    KZKG ^ Gaara said

HAHAHA no, it's not weird…. it's you who say you're a programmer but still something as simple as my nickname is weird for you HAHA.

      2.    helena_ryuu said

I'm not saying it's weird…. I would just say that you like Naruto 😀 hahaha

        1.    KZKG ^ Gaara said

Whew, someone who doesn't think it's weird haha.
Actually, I have this nick for 5 years or more, I have not seen or read Naruto, but I appreciate my nick

          1.    dwarf said

It's a tedious nickname to write, damn it, programming is one thing and the other is that I like to get my fingers tangled outside of tasks.

The other is that for the worse, I don't like Naruto xD

          2.    elav said

You save that by saying like me: KZKosa .. xDDD

  20.   magnus512 said

Hey, very good post :), we hope more will come.

  21.   DanielC said

    jajajaja

That is why I do not like to see anything of design, knowing how to make an image takes away the magic for me, I prefer to stay with the final result !!!

    1.    KZKG ^ Gaara said

HAHAHAHA to me what to know how to do it…. It makes me feel silly, because I tell myself: «fuck, and it was that simple and I unknowingly" … LOL

  22.   auroszx said

Awesome! 😀 I had always wondered how they did that effect in images. Then I taste it 😉 And welcome to the group.

What to say that other users haven't already said? Excellent article, especially for me who like graphic design. I hope we have more of your articles here Helena, it really is a great pleasure.
