At last the final version of GNOME was released, one of the most anticipated projects in free software and which offers us a refreshing experience on the desktop, completely new and modern.
GNOME 3, without a doubt, will be the first of a new generation, which will be totally different from the ones we have known so far. |
Simply beautiful
The new GNOME desktop has taken elegance to a new level. They have swept away all the clutter and confusion and built a simple and easy to use desktop. This is, hands down, the most beautiful GNOME desktop in its history. In addition, the new "shell" comes with a new desktop theme, a completely redesigned font and highly polished animations.
An overview at a glance
The "activities" view provides a very simple way to access all windows and applications. It's also a great way to keep track of all your activities. This view can be accessed in a number of ways (all very simple and convenient), including the Super key (or Windows key) and the upper left edge of the screen.
Full integration with your messaging services
Messaging services are an important part of any modern desktop, but it is very annoying to have to switch between active windows every time you need to reply to a message. For this reason, GNOME 3 will allow you to continue your conversations without the window you are working in losing focus. The ability to reply to your messages directly in the notification bubbles, in addition to integrating messaging services to the desktop, makes them much more pleasant and less annoying.
Goodbye distractions
GNOME 3 has been designed to minimize distractions and interruptions that take away your control over what you are doing. The new notification system displays messages in a very subtle way and saves them until you are ready to read them. The GNOME 3 panel has been designed to be as inconspicuous as possible. These changes will surely allow you to focus on your tasks.
Everything at your fingertips
In the new GNOME desktop everything can be accessed from the keyboard. Hit the Super key and search, it's that simple. You are going to love this tool once you use it a couple of times.
Completely redesigned system preferences
The system preferences were completely redesigned in GNOME 3, making the system configuration process a much more enjoyable and simple task. GNOME 3 also comes with a new way to view your settings, greatly speeding up your search for the options you are looking for.
Much for much more
GNOME 3 is full of new features. Here we list some of the most important that you can find:
- It is possible to group windows side by side, making work easier when using multiple windows.
- Completely redesigned file explorer.
- The workspaces were redesigned to allow better organization of the windows.
- Many changes and bug fixes that allow for a faster and "smoother" desktop experience.
- GNOME 3 fits perfectly on any size, be it a netbook or a desktop PC.
Installation
Ubuntu
sudo add-apt-repository ppa: gnome3-team / gnome3
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install gnome-desktop3 gnome-shell
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
Arch
Nothing better than reading the Arch wiki.

Have you tried it on Natty? Because it doesn't suit me: S and now the graphic environment seems prehistoric: S
The only reason I upgraded Natty is to try Gnome3 🙂 because Unity… is HORRIBLE
Sadly my virtual machine with Arch doesn't load it 100% 🙁
Edit:
Natty doesn't find the gnome-desktop3 package either, it's "gnome3-session"
Why don't you post the installation on Ubuntu 10.10…? not all of us use beta 11.04, I prefer stable or release versions.

aaa okokok, but the beta of 11.04 does not come with gnome3 or gnome-shell installed ?????
Sep. I tried it on virtualbox and it worked fine.
and it will be able to install without problems in ubuntu 10.10 ′ ??
a couple of months ago, I installed a beta (or alpha) of gnome-shell… and it threw bundled with compiz… so I had to uninstall it… later, in case I just had some bugs… (as expected)…
well, I'll install it to see how it is =) !!!
I really don't know Fer! Let me know when you know.
A hug! Paul.
hey !!!!! where did they get the information from !!!!
look what happens:
… ~ $ Sudo apt-get install gnome-desktop3 gnome-shell
Reading package list ... Done
Creating dependency tree
Reading the status information ... Done
E: The gnome-desktop3 package could not be located
and obviously I added the repo and updated! = S
Completely agree with you
Reading package list ... Done
Creating dependency tree

E: The gnome-desktop3 package could not be located
See if it works now. I changed the code to enter. 🙂
Cheers! Paul.

Cheers! Paul.
yep, apparently you're absolutely right!….
that is to install gnome-shell no more ... on top of gnome2.32.0 ... .. and go bugeado !!!! ...
uhmmm ... as we are walking around in this post = /
I feel the same as when I found out that Santa Claus does not exist = (
Already. The previous code was fine, but it only works with Ubuntu 11.04, that's why it can't find the packages when you want to install it on Ubuntu 10.10 (you sure have that one).
Cheers! Paul.
uhmmm and who will work if ubuntu 11.04 comes out almost at the end of this month ????… .. = Yes or am I wrong ??
It sounds great, I will try to install it on Ubuntu 9.10 - Karmic Koala to see if it works well
It really looks very attractive, I'll wait for Mint 11 to try it.
By the way, for those who want to install it on Ubuntu 10.10 and the like, I've been reading cases of people who did manage to install it but complain about functionality flaws. So I think we better wait for new versions of our distros to test it fully. Cheers!
I am going to take it into account but I have an important question, how does it work? Does it look fluid? Besides adapting to a netbook screen, does it run well on a netbook in battery saving mode? Regards.
To those who are testing the beta version my dear friend. Also, Ubuntu 11.04 (final) is already coming out.
Cheers! Paul.
A while ago when I tried it, it worked quite well ... but, like everything ... it's a matter of taste.
I didn't find it available for Ubuntu 10.10 yet. 🙁
Surely in the next few days it will be.
Cheers! Paul.
but the 11.04 that should not come with that installed already ?? ...
No ... on the contrary ... the next version of Ubuntu will come with Unity, which will replace Gnome-Shell. That is why the post clarifies that there may be some "problems" when trying to install it, since Unity is based on Gnome 2.32.
If you want to use Gnome 3 in the future, I think the best option is going to be to switch to Linux Mint.
Cheers! Paul.
Well, the wave was that U11.04 would arrive with Unity, but there are rumors that it will come with the traditional Gnome since there are still stability flaws with Unity, well that's what I've been reading.
regards
Well as I understand in Mint they intend for the moment to continue with the classic GNOME desktop, that is, with Metacity as a window manager, not Gnome-Shell ... this is one of the reasons that confirm that it is separating from the Ubuntu line and is increasingly taking on a personality of its own.
Maybe I'll be wrong later, but I only report what I have read.
Well, rumors have been heard that maybe Ubuntu will not carry Unity in 11.04 because according to what I read it would not be ready yet ... if they would use Gnome-Shell instead it is something that I do not know since as I say, they are only rumors.
And regarding Mint I repeat what I said above, they intended to continue with the classic GNOME desktop, what I don't know is if what this meant is that they would use GNOME 3 but with Metacity as a window manager or if they would continue with GNOME 2.32 ... but anyway, we'll see when it is released.
In fact, everything you said is true, for Mint 11 they will not follow the Ubuntu 11 line with Unity, but will use Gnome 3 without Shell.
I think it is better this way because the truth does not bring me much confidence unity in a desktop, but then there they.
The good thing is that Mint 11 if you can install Shell 😀
Exactly ... in Mint you can install Shell ... that's why I said ... 🙂
FOR UBUNTU 10.10:
«1) sudo add-apt-repository ppa: gnome3-team / gnome3
2) sudo aptitude update
3) sudo aptitude install gnome3-session
4) sudo aptitude update, its reboot crazy and voila :) »
According to the source of this, it works wonders on ubuntu 10.10 (genome3 comes with gnome-shell included)
Greetings !!!!

* sudo apt-get install gnome-shell
Greetings and thanks for the contribution!!
