GNOME Shell will also work without 3D acceleration

As announced in the fedora mailing list (remember that the developers of Red Hat occupy important positions in GNOME), GNOME Shell can be run without the need for 3D acceleration in Fedora 17.

What Kirchner ad: "GNOME Shell for everyone", regardless of the characteristics of the graphics card or whether you can make use of the 3D acceleration of the desktop or not.

Nowadays, an essential requirement of GNOME Shell is the use of 3D acceleration of the desktop, something a bit traumatic because many times that means using proprietary drivers from ATI or NVIDIA, which in turn caused quite a few problems.

For this reason, in the same way that Canonical has done with Unity 2D, the GNOME development team has been working on enabling the use of GNOME Shell without the need for 3D acceleration.

The question now is what will happen to GNOME Fallback, the classic desktop environment (somewhat precarious, but it served as a lifeline for many users for different reasons), because if it is not necessary, why keep it?
In this way, and to continue everything as before, Matte Desktop, the Argentine project, will be the one who bears the laurels of offering an old-school desk. The developers of Linux Mint They are actively collaborating in this project. The idea is to offer the classic GNOME 2 interface but based on GNOME 3.

Be that as it may, the news is very interesting for those who want to jump to GNOME Shell but cannot do so due to the technical characteristics of their equipment. You just need to know when it will be extended to the rest of the distributions that support GNOME 3.
