GNU / Linux distributions for the scientific community

Blackboard background with math formulas

On many pages we can find lists of the best distributions of each year, also specific ones for security audits, engineering, for gamers, rare distros, etc., this time we show you a list with some of the distributions Most interesting GNU / Linux you should know if you belong to the scientific community, since they come full of pre-installed software that can help you in your day-to-day work in this important sector in our society.

Some of them are quite popular, and you will surely know by now, since there is a lot of talk about them. An example is the one developed by CERN, one of the most important "cathedrals" of science in the world where the large hadron collider is located in underground facilities on European soil, specifically in Switzerland. The best and brightest minds work there to try to make great advances in physics, and they do not use Windows or Mac, they use their own distro based on CentOS. In addition to Scientific Linux as it was known before, now called CERN CentOS, there is also many others that I will present to you in the following list:

  • CERN CentOS: It is available for free download, so any of us can get it from the link I leave. It is, as I said, the distro that is used at CERN and that they themselves have remodeled from the CentOS source code that they have used as a base. It is a very stable, secure and scalable operating system with many pretty good tools.

bio linux

  • bio linux: As its name suggests, it is a distribution that will satisfy the part of the scientific community dedicated to the field of biology, such as those dedicated to medical research. It is based on Ubuntu and can contain many pre-installed tools for working with DNA sequences, biomedical research, drawing phylogenetic trees, visualizing macromolecules, etc.

nhsbuntu

  • NHSBuntu: As its name suggests, it is based on Ubuntu too and in this case it has been thought of in the medical community. It is created by a group of specialists in the United Kingdom and to be used as the desktop distro for all doctors of the NHS National Health Service, that is, the health service of this country. We saw her being born in 2017, but currently her website does not seem to be active, at least at the time that I have consulted ...

  • CAELinux: is another distro dedicated to engineers. Therefore, it includes a multitude of pre-installed tools that they use frequently in their work. For example, we have CAD, CAM, CAE / FEA / CFD software, electronic design, 3D printing, etc. Among the packages are some as well known as FreeCAD or LibreCAD, PyCAM, Elmer, OpenFOAM, etc.

In the past there were also other distros, but now they seem somewhat abandoned. For example, Poseidon Linux has not been updated for a few years now. It is a shame that certain projects fall into oblivion, it is the bad thing to have the developer community so dispersed. On the one hand you generate many projects to satisfy many types or sectors of users, but on the other it is more frequent than projects are abandoned...

I hope it has been helpful for you…
