It is well known that Google 's servers are among the most powerful on the planet, so much so that even having recently launched a service as demanding as Drive, it can still afford to give away some of that power to projects that are not necessarily part of its business model.
This time, the Mountain View company has announced the creation of a mirror on its servers for the Linux kernel hosted at git.kernel.org . The new mirror can be found at https://kernel.googlesource.com/ and will benefit Linux users with the same infrastructure already used to distribute the Android source code , which serves more than 1 Terabyte of information daily and handles 2.5 million requests.
The mirror is also supported by multiple data centers located in Asia, the United States, and Europe to ensure fast access from anywhere in the world.
This is Google 's way of thanking a project that has helped them immensely, as it forms the basis of their Android and Chrome OS operating systems and very possibly their own servers; and while it is true that Google , like any other company, can be criticized for many things, it is also worthwhile to acknowledge when they perform an altruistic act in favor of our beloved penguin.
