The search giant seeks to be the all-in-one solution And boy has he done it in a quite "peculiar way, so to speak", since not many are followers of Google products, but even so he has reached a fairly good position not only thanks to his search engine but also to his famous Android operating system.
And it is that speaking of the latter, Google recently unveiled its first chip that will be implemented in its smartphones, which indicates their biggest challenge to date for Apple and Samsung, as Google will build its own processor, called Tensor and that this will power its new Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro phones this fall.
But this It does not mean that Google finally says goodbye to Qualcomm, since it was announced that will continue to work closely In current and future products based on its Snapdragon platform, what if it happens is that it is no longer a leading provider of chips for Google's Android phones.
The latter ends the era of Pixels equipped with Snapdragon processors, which will now be replaced by Tensor. Google's move follows Apple's, which now uses its own processors in its new computers instead of Intel chips. And like Apple, Google also uses an Arm-based architecture.
Processors Arm consume less power and are used across the industry for mobile devicesfrom smartphones to tablets and laptops.
Regarding the name "Tensor" that has been given to the processor, this is a nod to the name of Google's TensorFlow processing unit, which has promoted several of his projects. It's a complete system on a chip, or SoC (system on a chip), which the company says will significantly improve photo and video processing on phones, as well as features like speech synthesis and translation.
According to a company blog post, Tensor includes a dedicated processor that runs artificial intelligence applications (AI), plus a central processor, a graphics processor and a signal processor.
With which he mentions that allow the phone to process more information on the device instead of having to send data to the cloud. In addition to these key points, the processor is also expected to deliver better performance during machine learning tasks, an essential upgrade to boost Google's current and new features and services.
Google really wants to create a processor that it currently considers non-existent on the market.
"The problem with Pixel has been that we continue to run into limitations with the technological solutions available in the market, and it is really difficult to get our most advanced things from research teams over the phone," said the boss. Google Hardware Rick Osterloh in an interview with CNBC last week. "It's really going to transform what we can do on the phone with machine learning and artificial intelligence," he added.
The Tensor will debut on the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, which will launch later this year.. This is a big step for the company as it seeks to differentiate itself in a crowded smartphone market, something the company has admitted to struggling with in the past.
This is one of the reasons behind making a custom chip. Osterloh said that:
«The new chip will help Google phones to take better photos and videos. "We really made a custom processor built for computational photography."
In fact, Google's Pixel phones already take some of the best photos of any phone on the market, so that's a big claim. In a media demo, Osterloh showed an example of how the new chip can help decrease blur when a subject moves while taking a photo.
The same technology that Google uses to enhance photos can now be used to enhance videos, which Osterloh said was not possible with other chips.
"The team that designed our silicon wanted to make the Pixel even better," said Osterloh.
