Grooveshark is a tremendous online music search engine and recommendation engine that allows users to search and upload music freely and for free.
In this post we show you how to install a plugin to search, listen to and download Grooveshark music directly from Rhythmbox. |
Installation
1.- Download from here the zip and unzip the folder «Grooveshark» in
~ / .gnome2 / rhythmbox / plugins /
In case there is no ~ / .gnome2 / rhythmbox folder, just create the directory, and inside create the plugins folder
2.- Install dependencies
sudo apt-get install python-httplib2 python-gst0.10
3.- Then open Rhythmbox and go to Edit> Plugins and activate the option Grooveshark Music.
On the left a new icon will appear that says Grooveshark. Click there and then look for what you want and download it. The following video is quite explanatory.
This plugin is still in beta (under development). Although it worked for me, it may still have some bugs. In case you find them, I suggest you tell your creador.

Hello, Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, Rhythmbox 2.96, after doing the steps, the plugin 'Grooveshark Music' does not appear within the list of plugins
The same thing happens to me, I have the plugin but the button does not appear
The ONLY thing I have done was install this plugin, search for a song and THE ENTIRE USER FOLDER WAS DELETED. About 100 GB MISSING. Please check.
Greetings Pablo!
Your Blog is very interesting, congratulations. I tried this trick and it worked for me on my Canaima GNU / Linux laptop, but now I'm trying to install it on my desktop PC on which I use Sabayon but it can't load the grooveshark symbol in it left menu. I already installed the dependencies that you name there which are equivalent in sabayon to dev-python / httplib2-0.6.0 and dev-python / gst-python-0.10.21. Do you have any idea what might be happening? First of all thanks for the information
Look at the comments on this post. Maybe the same bug affects you. Cheers!
Well said!
Just what I needed!!! next to pandora my ears are going to bleed XD
Well, I have a problem. It appears to me in plugin, and I can configure it, but I don't have any Grooveshark side buttons. Any ideas?
I don't know if it works for someone else but I don't have the add-ons in that path, I have it and copy the folder "Gorooveshark" in ~ / .local / share / rhythmbox / in case someone can't find it, I hope it will help. BTW is on an Ubuntu LTS 10.04
Good date!
It does not work.
Salu2.
what a gross!
it worked for me!
It should be noted that you have a rude error in step 2, since if they copy and paste as you have typed it to the command, a stack of errors will jump in the console (you put two commands on a line separated by a 'and' and at the end you left two exclamation marks!)
thanks for sharing
regards
Thank you! Fixed… bye filthy error. 🙂
Cheers! Paul.
See if it works for you now ... I corrected step 2. 🙂
It worked for good and first! Grosooo!
To me the same thing happens to me. Supposedly I have the dependencies installed, but when starting rhythmbox by console I get the following error:
File "/home/juser/.gnome2/rhythmbox/plugins/Grooveshark/__init__.py", line 36, in activate
group = rb.rb_source_group_get_by_name ("library")
AttributeError: 'module' object has no attribute 'rb_source_group_get_by_name'
It must be some compatibility issue with the version of Rhythmbox you have installed, I guess. Note that there were other people who worked well (myself included).
If you find out how to fix it, feel free to share the solution.
A hug! Paul.
Folks, from what I could see on Google, the problem must be in a change in the Rhytmbox API that comes with Natty. This also happens to many people with other plugins (Ubuntu One, Shoutcast Radio, etc.).
I leave the links: http://fossplanet.com/f10/%5Bbug-773074%5D-%5Bnew%5D-plugin-does-not-load-after-upgrade-natty-144347/ http://code.google.com/p/rhythmbox-shoutcast/issues/detail?id=28 http://code.google.com/p/rhythmbox-ampache/issues/detail?id=8 https://bugs.launchpad.net/rhythmbox-ubuntuone-music-store/+bug/724256
This is clearly a bug.
A greeting! Paul.
I just switched to LMDE - which as I have read has more visits this summer than Ubuntu - for the moment satisfied, but that way of installing the plugin does not help me, nor the other one discussed here, to see if some charitable soul posts the form here to do it in LMDE - Linux Mint Debian Edition -
