GWoffice: What LibreOffice could be (in terms of interface)

I am in Webupd8 an interesting article where Andrew shows us a new application called GW office, which allows us to work with Google Drive from our desktop, which we can install in Ubuntu opening a terminal and following these steps:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:tombeckmann/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install gwoffice

But my goal is not to talk about this application because I have not even tried it, but about its interface according to the photos that I have borrowed from the original article. Let's see the following screenshots taken by Andrew and tell me could not LibreOffice do something like this?

Notice how clean and simple this interface is written in gtk, and that it is compatible with HUD and the launchers Unity. Something like this we have been crying out for users of OpenOffice / LibreOffice a while ago, and as you can see, it is not impossible to achieve it. Maybe some adjustments could be made, to preserve a little more vertical space, but at least I love the way this app looks. They make you want to use it 😀

LibreOffice should change its interface relatively urgently, but I understand that it is not an easy task. Modifying an interface brings with it a modification of work habits with the aforementioned program, because the menus and their position are affected by the redesign. However, although form must always follow function, I think that an aesthetically-cared program is much more pleasant and comfortable to work with.

if it wasn't "attached" to Drive, it would be perfect

super troll on mode: Are you talking about Drive and are you using Google Chrome and Windows? Counterproductive no? XDDDDD

      1.    v3on said

no, it is not counterproductive, linux is not the best OS for all cases, for example mine, the project (and my work) requires that I use windows, also that using chrome does not mean that it is a google-fag-fan, ,, sorry your super troll mode is not enough

I don't understand, except for four buttons, the interface is that of google drive / docs on the web put in an html viewer, if the logged-in user even appears.

Wolf is right, the interface change is not as simple as just saying it, you have to do a lot of research and do a lot of testing because that can take away users as much as add them. That in addition to how complicated it would be on a technical level. Can you imagine how many lines of code must be modified / created for that? xD

I have tried this app, it is quite simple and powerful thanks to google docs, the interface is based on elementary UI that is why it is so clean, I also think it uses granite to create those pop up windows so modeled since GTK does not have them, libreoffice I would have to do a lot of work to achieve something like this, on the other hand libreoffice is a much more robust program and with many more functions than this app, therefore it seems to me that the complexity of libreoffice is the main problem to develop a clean, modern and productive as well that can be accepted by the new and old users of the suite, without a doubt a great feat to be done.

In my opinion I agree with the idea of an "urgent" new interface in libreoffice, it is something that seems to me as a user more necessary than new functions and features, many designers have worked and proposed new GUIs for a long time, although developers from libreoffice seem to be aware of this, for now they focus on developing the office suite and leaving aside the interface, I hope that at least libreoffice has a new interface before the release of office 2013, since although I am against microsoft, definitely the current office interface is better and the metro interface far surpasses libreoffice (I mean in GUI and UX nothing else) otherwise I have always believed that libreoffice is much better in functionality but in these times the beauty of the application is It has become a necessity and requirement to compete.

And does that app come in Spanish or does it only come in English?

      1.    kesymarukesymaru said

For now only in Spanish, but translating it would be very easy with launchpad, although it is a very simple app and therefore it is very intuitive, so if you use it you will notice that there is no problem that it is in English!

Anyone have remote idea of how to connect idjc with skype to stream radio in linux? And if you know, is it possible with alsa?

It would be nice to have those kinds of tutorials.

Yes, Elav, you're right, LibreOffice could visually resemble this program, what's more. LibreOffice if you apply the Citrus UI mockup at the end, it would look similar.

But I think they will improve that section in due time, since they still have to focus on improving its performance (a little more if possible, because they have already improved it a lot) and on eliminating as much obsolete or redundant code as possible.

I suppose that the improvements in the interface will come with the next versions, so I am sure that before the end of the year we will have a renewed LibreOffice inside and out 🙂

    A greeting.

In my opinion it looks much better using the elementary theme 🙂

After testing it, I can say that the interface is very nice, and has few bugs for such a new project, but the memory consumption is excessive, much more than libreoffice.

I believe that AbiWord is also simple and has a simple interface to work with…. In case of improving the Libre Office interface, you should look at Microsoft's Office side to attract other users and also improve the compatibility with your files

If there is a change in the libreoffice interface, I just hope it is gradual.

    1.    ergean said

Probably if they change the interface it will be in a higher version, LibreOffice 3.7, or 3.8 for example.

I share your opinion and also in my view it looks elegant and professional.

I completely agree, today's LIbreOffice looks too much like MS Office 2003, and the truth is that it is somewhat uncomfortable to use, I am one of those who believe that aesthetics do matter, especially because it matters to more people every time .

    looks like Google Docs 🙂

A clean, minimalist and modern interface, now I wonder, will it be so difficult to redesign the icons and create a patch or theme-like application to update the libreOffice icons?

Where do I save LibreOffcie icons?

but it is only the shell, what is needed is something else in my view but there I leave it

  18.   Alekshadow said

Yeah, it's about time they changed that horrible interface.

If libreoffice improves its interface, it would gain many users, we are in 2013 and it still reminds us of the openoffice of 12 years ago.
