HarmonyOS, an open source platform for every device

During its annual developer conference, Huawei announced HarmonyOS, a new open source platform which has been developing for a long time under the name HongMeng OS.

HarmonyOS is "the first OS with distributed microkernel for all scenarios”CEO Richard Yu mentioned to all attendees.

This new platform has support for phones, smart speakers, computers, watches, wireless headphones, cars and tablets. Yu mentions that HarmonyOS will work in a wide range of RAMS from kilobytes to gigabytes, although it is very interesting that it will not have Root access.

The CEO of Huawei also noted that the platform will have support for a large number of apps, specifying that applications created with HTML, or compatible with Linux and Android they will be compatible. Also, the ARK compiler in HarmonyOS will make the system support Kotlin, Java, JavaScript, C, and C ++.

What will happen to Android?

In connection with the latest news related to Google, it is mentioned that HarmonyOS can replace Android at any time, but Yu reiterates his commitment to the Google platform.

Meanwhile, the first product to use HarmonyOS will be television. Honor Vision, which was launched in China on August 10.

The system has been introduced to counter the ban the United States imposed on the company in May. President Donald Trump has partially lifted the ban, but the US Department of Commerce is still banning the company.

The ban does not allow Huawei to offer Android on its devices, so HarmonyOS is seen as a plan B if the ban does not allow Google to continue offering its system to Huawei in the future.
