Heroic Games Launcher: Epic Games and GOG Games Launcher
What is Heroic Games Launcher?
According to the developers of “Heroic Games Launcher” at their Official website, this application is briefly described as:
"An alternative to Epic Games' game launcher, open source and available on Linux, Windows and MacOSX".
"Heroic Games Launcher, or simply "Heroic", is a native graphical interface alternative to the Epic Games Launcher (EGL), for both Linux, Windows and MacOS. It is open source under the GPLv3 license, and is maintained by a community of developers who work for free in their spare time. For now, Heroic is mostly a GUI for Legendary (which is a CLI tool that handles login, download, and launch of games). While, support for other stores and adding your own games (think Steam's "Add Non-Steam Game" feature) is planned for the future.".
Before starting the review of this application, it is worth noting that it will be tested on the respin called MilagrOS 3.0 MX-NG-22.01 based MX-21 (Debian-11) with XFCE and that we recently explored here!,
For your download and testing, we will use the package at .AppImage format. However, it is available in .deb, .rpm, .pacman and .tar.xz format. In addition, we will test your latest version available, from number 2.2.3.
Installation and Use
Since, it is a package in .AppImage format It should only be started with execution permissions, like any portable application, so that we can then log in to it, download the favorite and interesting games that we want, free or paid, and start playing.
It is worth noting that, already within it, the ideal and first thing to do is, configure the language of the graphical user interface (GUI)Within the Settings/General option. Then, download wine version with which you would like to manage the games, within the Wine Manager option. And lastly, within the Settings option, Wine/Other/Log, verify and change the default parameters, which are believed necessary or desirable.
At this point, we only have to go to the option of Stores, start the acquisition (free or paid) of the desired games, and download them. To then execute them through the option Library and enjoy them on GNU / Linux. Such as, we tried with the following image:
