SRWare Iron vs Chromium / Chrome

The high consumption that the latest versions of Firefox they have forced me to use Chromium, which is a shame, because I identify more with him Mozilla browser than with that of Google.

What's wrong with the Google? Well, it blatantly violates our privacy without being able to do anything at all. That is why the SRWare Iron Project, a fork of Chromium that helps us protect our information .. How? Look at the following comparative table between one and the other.

Comparison of Iron y Chrome in privacy matters:

Problem Chrome Iron
Installation ID Each copy of Google Chrome includes an installation number that will be sent to Google after installation and first use. It clears once Chrome checks for updates the first time. If Chrome is part of a promotional campaign, it can also generate a promotion number that is sent to Google after its first use. Does not exist in Iron.
Suggestions Depending on the configuration, every time you type something in the address bar, this information is sent to Google to provide suggestions about your search. Does not exist in Iron.
Alternative Error Pages Depending on the configuration, if you type a false address in the address bar, it is sent to Google and you receive an error message from Google's servers. Does not exist in Iron.
Bug Report Depending on the configuration, details about browser crashes or crashes are sent to Google's servers. Does not exist in Iron.
RLZ Tracker This Chrome feature transmits encrypted information of all kinds to Google, such as when and where Chrome was downloaded. Does not exist in Iron.
Google Updater Chrome installs an updater, which loads in the background all the time. Does not exist in Iron.
URL crawler Called depending on the settings, five seconds after launching the Google home page opens in the background. Does not exist in Iron.

Other important differences:

Problem Chrome Iron
Ad Blocker Chrome doesn't have a built-in ad blocker. Iron has an easy-to-use, built-in ad blocker that can be configured with a single file.
User agent The Chrome User Agent can only be changed with parameters on a link or command, which is not ideal for permanent use. The Iron User Agent can be flexible and permanently configured by the "UA.ini" file.
Miniatures Chrome only has 8 thumbnails on the "New Tab" page. Iron offers you 12 thumbnails to make use of most of the space available on your monitor.

So for all these reasons, I'm going to use SRWare Iron hereinafter. The bad thing is that I will not have it in my repositories and I will have to update it manually, but it is not something to burst into tears.

But a question arises: So what does Chromium do in the debian repositories, if it sends all that information to google? I get the impression that this would go against debian rules ...

    1.    elav <° Linux said

Very good question ... You have to find information about it ..

I think Chromium is being confused with Chrome, as far as I know and I understand the one that passes the privacy through the lining is Chrome not Chromium ..

        Salu2.

It would not be anything strange, that the version of Chromium that is in its repos, is a modified version to avoid this type of situation. The same thing happened with Firefox in the beginning, which led to the creation of the Iceweasel project by having conflicts with Mozilla.

It is concerning to what extent the use of the web (or of any communication technology, including telephony, for example) is monitored, generally (but not exclusively) for marketing purposes. I usually add extensions to browsers that block both ad addons and scripts that collect user data. Sometimes the pages become unnavigable and you realize the magnitude of quasi-espionage that exists. Needless to say about social media, but anyway.

And it is not that they violate the privacy of users as individuals (although to a lesser extent they also do so), but rather that they violate the privacy of groups (of people) reduced to markets and consumer objects.

    One question:

Is iron compatible with chrome / chroium extensions?

    Greetings.

    1.    gadi said

Yes, it is supported. You can install extensions, applications and themes from the Chrome Web Store without any problem, although the browser takes you somewhere else by default.

The information is appreciated, but for those of us who do not know how to update manually, this is something to cry about.

    1.    elav <° Linux said

When I say update manually, I mean download the .deb package, open a terminal and put:
      dpkg -i paquete.deb

      nothing complicated.

  12.   darzee said

The truth is that I did not install it before because when I heard about it there was only a version for poor operating systems (windows. *) But now I'm downloading it to see how it works ...

  13.   Lucas Matthias said

Huu, I did not know that, but since I care about a sovereign cucumber the resources that the fox consumes, I am still faithful to him 😀
    Thanks for the data.

  14.   darzee said

Well, it is already proven. Tested and uninstalled 24 hours later. I do not know if it is the application, my OS (Linux Mint) or myself but it hangs (it will be windosero ...), it closes itself and it annoys me a lot because it does not even recover the tabs when you open it again.

So, as there are many alternatives and I don't have time to entertain myself in solving it, I will continue using Midori, Chromium and Firefox (ea, it will be browsers on my pc).

  15.   ppsalama said

    Hey.
Is it possible to install it on archlinux without uninstalling chrome?

Spectacular browser. The truth is equal to chrome (Possibly a little faster). The interface differences are minimal but the internal ones are many. I have seen an article * on the web that said that there was no reason to use this browser since it has the same functions as chrome and that we only had to activate it (Very false article).
