How to connect to Facebook with Pidgin

It is not the first time that we talk about Facebook On the site, despite checking previous posts, I realized that we have never explained how using an instant messaging application (Pidgin in this case) we can connect to this network.

There are not a few users who have a Facebook account and yet we are not exactly addicts, far from it. Many of Facebook the only thing that interests us is the chat with our acquaintances, because we have no interest in feeding animals on a farm, knowing our horoscope for the day, etc 😀

For users that, as I describe, we are only interested in chat, fortunately our instant messaging applications such as Pidgin (Kopete, Empathy, etc) have support for Facebook.

Here I will show you how to use Facebook chat with Pidgin, without opening the website.

1. First obviously, we must install Pidgin on our distro:

If you use ArchLinux, Chakra or some derivative:

sudo pacman -S pidgin

If you use Debian, Ubuntu or derived:

sudo apt-get install pidgin

2. Then, we must open Pidgin and go to Accounts - »Manage Accounts  :

pidgin-manage-accounts

3. There we select the button Add

4. A window will appear, in which we must establish the following data:

pidgin-create-new-account

Here it is important to clarify what refers to «Username«. In this field we must specify what follows the last / of the URL of our Facebook profile. For example, the URL of my Facebook profile is http://www.facebook.com/kzkggaara so the username would put kzkggaara …another example, suppose the URL to my profile is http://www.facebook.com/Alejandro.DesdeLinux.Website… then, who would the user be? In fact, it would be Alejandro.DesdeLinux.Website 🙂

5. Then we click the button Add and voila, it will connect and show us the list of friends:

pidgin-facebook-listing

And voila, so we avoid opening or waste invest bandwidth with Facebook.com as such.

I hope the article has been interesting for you. Although I am not a big fan of Facebook, nevertheless, for those users who are (and not to seem like an antisocial hehe), a good site for Facebook tips or tutorials is Timeline Covers.

regards

I would add the installation of https://code.google.com/p/pidgin-gnome-keyring/ otherwise, anyone who has access to your user home can make all your passwords just by looking at ~ / .purple / accounts.xml

I don't know if anyone knows a more generic method to encrypt passwords in pidgin thinking of those who don't use gnome

In fact I use Pidgin + KWallet, which has been the KDE Gnome-Keyring 🙂 https://blog.desdelinux.net/pidgin-con-kwallet/

Nope, KWallet is much more than the GNOME Keyring that you mention 😀

And what is the use if Facebook's XMPP network is closed? You can only chat between Facebook users. The same happens with WhatsApp, Line, Viber, Hangouts and all those apps that sent the XMPP protocol to hell.

    Greetings:
Facebook with Pidgin; I am from Arequipa in Peru, sometimes I used E-mail to comment in news newspapers for example, mining and environment issues in Cajamarca - Peru, and most of the time, I was censored for showing an opinion contrary to the media and by acting of my government. Since then I think, what is the point of identifying myself with an email if in the end I am censored for freely giving an opinion on a subject in question, to that if I say intransigence and intolerance, that surely they are attributes that an antisocial being has.
I do not know, and I will not understand why they say antisocial to those who do not like to talk with their peers; This is clearly discussed, only if there is a common topic of conversation; like the GNU Linux case where we share opinions or ideas about software; I think or believe antisocial to any person who is incapable of sharing the well-being that he possesses with his fellow men, someone who out of selfishness causes a lack of culture; well-being, responsibility, etc. among the great masses of his species, of which we are also a part each of us who read this great blog.
Thank you for having expressed your ideas about the use of these piding and facebook applications and it is more about the behavior that you consider antisocial.

Many people are not so antisocial Because yes, but many times there is an incompatibility of paradigms by which it makes a person with an open mind not be accepted in a society that has a closed mind.

And back to the topic, you can also use Thunderbird as a Facebook Chat client. The truth is that you can also choose to use the #IRC to communicate (so far, the best chat ecosystem I have used so far).

Taking a term out of context and using it pejoratively is a strategy that has always been used.
If you don't give away your data to companies like Facebook, you are antisocial.
If you do not agree with what the government is doing, you are an anarchist.
If you do not agree with proprietary software you are an extremist, religious, taliban, caveman, hippie, blah blah blah.
If you do not agree with the economic policies, you are a Marxist - Communist - Bourgeois - Imperialist (As applicable).
This is how it has always been and it will be, because weak minds are the majority, and it is enough for you to repeat something over and over again so that in the end they believe it and they repeat it too, and it is easier for them to put one label and vilify, to feel in a position of superiority when they cannot debate with logical arguments.
Of course, all that companies / governments know very well and take advantage of it.
