How to properly adjust color in GIMP (and 3)

In the previous two installments we learned why digital devices tend to interpret color differently and that this is why it is necessary, in many cases, to make color adjustments.

III.- What should I adjust in an image?

This is where you have to consider the properties of color:

  1. Tone:Also called hue or chroma, it is the attribute that differentiates the color and by which we designate the colors: green, violet, orange.

  2. Saturation: It is the chromatic intensity or purity of a color.

  3. Brightness: It is the amount of light emitted by a light source or reflected by a surface.

What can knowing this be useful for? Well, basically it will help us decide if the image should be brightened, saturated or toned. Let's see some examples:

This is the image that we have been using and which will serve as a comparison parameter for the exercise we intend to do.

Tone

If we compare these images with the original we notice that:

  • The first one is very blue
  • The second very red
  • The third very green

This deviation in tone or hue is called "Cast" o "invasion"In other words, one of them is cast in blue, the other in red and the last in blue. In these cases, the tone must be compensated.

Saturation

In this case we observe that the color is very poor, it lacks saturation to achieve the vivid tones of the original image.

Bright

Here, in the third case, the image is too dark and requires lightening.

It should be mentioned that it may be possible that there are two or all three cases of color deviation shown here in the same image, that is, we have to correct tone and brightness; tone and saturation; brightness and saturation or hue, saturation and brightness.

To be continue….

Countless times I have come across very good images (for example wallpaper), but "cast" and I have left them out. If I had known before> _
