How to use Dropbox on Xfce (Thunar)

Many users XFCE we have been abandoned before the favoritism of some services, by other desktop environments. Luckily, the community is resourceful and makes any handicap an opportunity to show what it's made of.

This is a clear example, dropbox integrates only with Nautilus, the project File Manager Gnome. However, a good solution has emerged that is shared with us from the page WEBUPD8.

1. INSTALL DROPBOX

The first and most recommended thing is to previously create a Dropbox account. If you want to help Pavloco Foundation (I mean XD) to get a little extra free space, you can register from here. The free account gives you 2gb of space.

After creating the account we install dropbox for Linux (has no dependencies with Nautilus). It can be done from Ubuntu repositories (sudo apt-get install nautilus-dropbox) and there is even a Debian package on the official page, but I I recommend installing it in the following wayas it apparently works on all distros and versions.

For 32 bit we execute in Terminal:
cd ~ && wget -O - "https://www.dropbox.com/download?plat=lnx.x86" | tar xzf -

For 64 bit we execute:
cd ~ && wget -O - "https://www.dropbox.com/download?plat=lnx.x86_64" | tar xzf -

Next, we run the Dropbox daemon from the newly created .dropbox-dist folder with:
~/.dropbox-dist/dropboxd

If you run dropbox on your computer for the first time, follow the instructions that the installation program will give you. Once you do, your "Dropbox" folder will be created in the main directory.

Once this is done and if we want Dropbox to run when Login, we go to Menu »Configuration» Configuration manager »Session and start. Let's go to the tab "Auto start applications" and we select "Add".

We add the following parameters:

NAME: DROPBOX
DESCRIPTION: (we leave it blank)
COMMAND: / home / (your username) /. dropbox-dist / dropboxd

You press OK.

2. INSTALL THE DROPBOX THUNAR EXTENSION IN XFCE

So far the only thing that Dropbox does in our system with XFCE is to synchronize the files, but if we want to have the functions that appear when pressing the secondary button on the «Dropbox» folder, we only have to use the plugin THUNAR DROPBOX.

The Crunchbang distro brings us some .deb packages that work perfectly in Xubuntu 12.04 (and should work with Debian) here the downloads.

32 bit

64 bit

On the other hand, users of Arch they can install it from the AUR repository

If these packages are not useful to you, you can try compiling the Source code following the instructions given here.

Of course I know that there are other free services similar to Dropbox, but it is well known that knowledge never hurts.

Greetings.

    @Pavloco Thank you very much for the tutorial. Excuse me, what is the name of the Font you used in the capture?

    Thank you very much, one less thing for which I use Marlin, because this one did have Dropbox support, I am getting more used to Thunar, I just have to wait for the day that the Xfce developers reconsider and consider adding tabs and being happy.

    Hello pavloco. Excuse me, what are the functions that appear when I right-click on the "Dropbox" folder? I have not configured Dropbox before, I have the thunar plugin installed but I do not know what I should see when I press the button, what functions are shown. I have already verified that the application works but those functions… you have intrigued me! Thanks for the tuto. Works fine on Manjaro 0.8.3! (Although I first installed Dropbox from AUR, as well as the plugin for Thunar, the folder was not created until I entered your commands. Those indicated by Dropbox itself only count for Nautilus and I use XfCE, Thunar "alors"). Saludines (I'm from Cantabria, what are we going to do ...)

      The menu when pressing the secondary button should show you a menu with the blue boxes as in the image of the post. Sorry for the delay in reply. I hope you turn around and read it 🙂
