What was the cause of the problem?
The issue was a compatibility issue between the Gtk version of Ubuntu y MATE (the same thing I said to Thirteen in a comment), which affected users based on the theme they were using. Some themes are known to work well (Carbon, LinuxMint-Z-Mate, Clearlooks), but the rest gave problems.
Therefore, a patch of Ubuntu gtk (010_make_bg_changes_queue_repaint.patch) and it's packed in Romeo (the unstable branch of the Linux Mint repositories). With this new version of GTK, MATTE seems stable and fast with all themes.
How to test the solution?
If you are using MATE en Linux Mint 12 and you are interested in trying these solutions before they are available to everyone else, please follow the steps below:
- Open the Update Manager.
- Click Edit -> Software Source.
- Allow Unstable (Romeo) packets.
- Upgrade.
- Sort the list of updates by version number.
- Apply all version updates 2.24.6-0ubuntu5linuxmint1.
