Audacity, mythical sound editor, jewel and flagship of Open Source projects, of which we cannot discuss its performance and quality, but which falters at one point… its appearance, because let's accept it, it's ugly.
Not that that influences its ability and power, but like many things in Free Software, it takes precedence functionality over aesthetics.
At this point, the developers have good ears, but bad eyesight. Of course, it is not the fault of the developers, it is the fault of the era we live in, in which the appearance of the applications is basically what attracts users.
Luckily, Audacity supports "themes" to enhance your look. and make its use a little more pleasant.
A user has created 3 topics (Vista, KDE and Gnome), which we can apply as follows:
1.- We are located in the Audacity settings folder and we create a directory called «Theme» as follows:
Linux:
mkdir -p ~/.audacity-data/Theme
Windows: Documents and Settings \ \ Application Data \ Audacity \ Theme
Mac: ~ / Library / Application Support / audacity / Theme
2.- We save the theme as ImageCache.png inside the Theme folder.
3.- We add these lines in the file audacity.cfg:
[Theme] LoadAtStart = 1
A change in the position of the tools and the result is as follows:
And we've already changed the look of Audacity! 😀 (even a little ... ..)
Of course there are some other topics (especially in the Audacity forums) and creating one is not that difficult, it would just take some patience in the GIMP 😉
I hope you find it useful.

It is still horrible, but what is xd going to do, it does its xd function
hahaha, well… that's the thing 🙂
I like Audacity for its simplicity, but Ardor simply takes the crown for satisfying the aesthetic and functional side of the app.
The programmers created some homemade widgets with wxWidgets and they did not care about aesthetics.
The wxWidgets default widgets look good on all operating systems.
wxWidgets has support for GTK 3.0. http://www.wxwidgets.org/
I program with wxWidgets and it has a lot of bindings for other libraries and programming languages.

"... the appearance of applications is basically what attracts users." But what kind of users? Ardor or Rosegarden, for example, are not very "kawaii" either, but they do achieve their job as professional-level applications. However, in the case of audacity, as it points to a simple audio editor without many professional pretensions, it may be that if it can be asked to improve its "look and feel". Now if it is to the detriment of its performance I prefer it to continue like this.
I don't see why having a better GUI should make performance worse, they are two things that have nothing to do with each other.
In KDE, with the respective Oxygen-GTK packages installed, the integration is not bad at all 😀
It is a problem for the developers and not for the wxWidgets libraries.
You can see that the developers created some homemade widgets with wxWidgets and that they did not care about aesthetics. WxWidgets default widgets look good on all
operating systems .
wxWidgets has support for GTK 3.0 also Google Drive uses wxPython a binding of wxWidgets. http://www.wxwidgets.org/ .
wxWidgets is at the level of QT and is better than Qt in the sense that it has a lot of binding, the caules are: wxPYTHON, wxLUA, wxJavaScript, wxRuby, wxWidgets Gtk, etc.
I program with wxWidgets.

Let's be honest…
It is a great tool but its GUI is horribly horrible, uglier and not born.
Long ago I switched to Ocenaudio for that reason.
Great, the Gnome one doesn't look bad, I'll definitely use it.
I am not worried about the aspect, what is driving me crazy is that it no longer works with jack, I always have to stop the server to start audacity, the saddest thing seems that nobody is seeing that topic
Audacity… what memories.
Luckily Ardor is at the level of Cool Edit Pro (or Adobe Audition) and the aesthetic is more refined.
Hi all:
Audacity until recently (until version 2.0.3) accepted native Linux plug-ins like LADSPA, LV2 etc, but as of version 2.0.5, I see at least in my case (since I use Ubuntu), already it does not incorporate them as in previous versions. I don't know what opinion they can give us to solve this apparent deficiency.
Thank you in advance for attending this comment.
Yours sincerely: Ernesto Flores Godínez
To customize Audacity in Windows 8:
- Download the .png image from the author's website (http://jcsu.jesus.cam.ac.uk/~hdc21/design/audacity/Gnome_ImageCache.png)
- Close Audacity if you have it open
- Go to the address: C: \ Users \\ AppData \ Roaming \ Audacity
- Open the file "audacity.cfg" with Notepad
- Add the following line:
[Themes]
LoadAtStart = 1
- Close the file saving the changes and create a new folder in the same direction called «Theme»
- Move the downloaded image to the newly created folder and rename it "ImageCache" without losing its .png format
- Open Audacity and go.
