Most of the readers here know that I am a user of Xfce. I love this Desktop Environment for many reasons that are not relevant now, but I have always said that KDE is the best Desktop Environment of GNU / Linux, or at least for me, the most complete. The only problem I have always had with it is the high consumption of resources that it entails.
Well, apart from HP Netbook (which has Xfce), at work today they assigned me another brand computer DELL model Precision T1600. I can only describe this artifact as: A beast. Has 4GB of RAM and a Processor Intel Xeon that marks me 8 cores, all this to manage 2 SCSI hard drives, and then I thought, What do I install on this monster?
Of course the first option was Debian, and for a moment I came to doubt between Xfce y Gnome, but seeing the changes that are coming with the Mexican Desktop, I chose to install the mouse. But before actually doing it, I started to think and I asked myself: With this piece of computer, what resources do you need to save? Go to take a bag and install KDE.
And so I did, as you can see in the image that starts this post. I still have many things to configure, but from the outset I love the theme that I have put to Firefox:
I can only say one thing: that's how nice to use KDE. With several applications open and without optimizing anything, consumption is around the 500MB. Therefore, I think that as long as I have a piece of computer like this, KDE will always be among my first options as Desktop next to Xfce y Cinnamon.
good xD I tried to install debian testing from the dvd to install it with my favorite environment kde xD but I could not, since it did not recognize the internet board on the notebook and it did not let me follow the installation steps: S
Congratulations for the choice and for the wallpapers, it was very elegant.
Thanks ^^
Welcome to the club… 🙂
Greetings.
Until recently I had it, Debian Testing with KDE, when in repos was 4.7.4. I have already abandoned KDE and I have returned to my usual love, Gnome, and I have returned with the best option to have it, SolusOS
Although I still have a Debian testing Gnome Shell 3.4.2 on the testing HD….
Enjoy KDE 😉
Anyway, it's KDE in one and Xfce in another .. We'll see when SolusOS stable comes out what happens 😀
A while ago 4.8.4 entered testing 😉
hello elav download an iso of testing kde but the grub does not recognize the win and starts by console I mean codes
I write the login but it won't let me enter the password I don't know what to do
Maybe it's an ISO problem. I could not tell you at this time, since what I did was install only the base system and later I was installing the packages I needed. After updating, GRUB recognized me only the entry for Windows. In your case, it is most likely that the Desktop Environment has not been installed. Using the same Debian disk, follow this tutorial to see if you solve the problem.
old man I just got home from work, I'm going to see your tutorial, something like that I needed thanks elav
old man I have a question for you (I'm already downloading the iso), these steps allow me to install debian along with windows? for the rest, thanks, the tutor is good and I'm an idiot for not having seen it before hehe
I recommend that you expose us your problem in the forum of the page, they have always helped me there and it is more likely that they will answer you. http://foro.desdelinux.net/
I have Debian installed together with WIndows 7 Professional that came from the factory on the PC without problems 😀
The Debian installer lately has trouble recognizing other Operating Systems.
When you start Debian after installing it, run an "update-grub2" so that it recognizes the other OS you have installed.
if it is that ... KDE is the monster of the desktops, of course if you have a half machine in conditions for such, right now I don't think you like Xfce, hahahaha
monster? … HAHA that makes me think: «KDE is the beauty, and Gnome is the beast»… HAHAHA
I mean that it is the most in desks, you can adapt it to all tastes, hahahahaha
Yes, as you say kde is the most complete as well as its applications. You don't need such a pc to move kde either, don't scare people.
I have been tempted to try gnome because of the novelty that its way of working and a new way of working supposes, but it is that kde gives me a lot and it is difficult to leave it, well and apart from what I read, gnome needs to mature a lot.
But yes, the best and most powerful is kde. Enjoy it.
KDE is the most complete without a doubt, the only thing that consumes many resources and in my case I like the simpler desktop, since I don't need so many options.
I am a fan of xfce, a little makeup can be very good and it is very practical and of course, I also love SolusOS with gnome 2.
The wallpaper you have chosen one last !.
First of all, congratulations on the blog, there are not many free of spam and trolls (of the annoying ones) and with good content.
I have been visiting for quite some time desdelinux and I never thought I was going to read this post, I almost fell off my chair when I read it, I hope you continue using it and abandon xfce, which is ugly and empty like the only one (lie is my second favorite desk, if something goes wrong or I get tired from kde I will move to a distro that uses xfce).
You should not point to kde as a resource swallower, nor does it eat so much ram or micro for what it offers, nor do you have to do so many things to make it consume less, in fact, most of the advice given so that it does not consume are not useful for much (the only thing they do is create more fluidity by eliminating effects that in my opinion has more kde) which if it works is to deactivate nepomuk and akonadi if you do not use the semantic desktop
PS: kde consumes 320 megabytes just started and about 400 after having been using the notebook to browse, music, movies, virtualbox, try to program web and sometimes using libreoffice and I have predefined swappiness = 1 (obviously closing all applications first corroborate it); all this without nepomuk and akonadi
PD2: I use kde on an asus x52f notebook.
PD3: I don't know if any when I was using or using windows the ram consumption was fixed in my case W7 x86 ate 650 - 800 megabytes so swallow resources to another OS with that story = P.
Well done very well. KDE is not only the most complete DE, it is also the most productive, as long as you configure it according to your needs.
A tip: to make Firefox look good, go to: System Preferences> Workspace appearance> Window decoration> Configure decoration ... And in the "Detailed settings" tab change the background style of "Follow style advice »To« Radial gradient ».
A greeting!
Thanks, it has helped me! Arigatou gozaimasu!
Thanks for the Tip 😀
Conclusion: we use Xfce the poor and the rich KDE, hahaha
HAHAHAHAA !!!!
there is nothing like a powerful makina to enjoy your favorite OS, congratulations!
You know the phrase, "God gives a beard to the one who doesn't have a chin" ... this one with that piece of PC, and he doesn't even love KDE like I do ... HAHAHAHAHAHA !!!!
Elav, I see, you used xfce out of necessity not out of conviction, you look like women, they go with the man who has the most money.
Rather, he is the typical man, he goes with the most beautiful. 😛
No, that's not true. I used no, I use Xfce because as I said in the entry of the article «I LOVE IT». However, I started using GNU / Linux with KDE 3.X, it was my first desk and I always liked it.
I have computers with very good specifications and I have XFCE in all of them ... What if I would like to tell you is that KDE never failed me in performance compared to Unity for example ... The reason I left KDE is because it looked a lot like Windows and tuning it made me spoil its essence ... 😛
Tuning it 'IS' its essence .. 🙂
I think it would be more correct to say that Windows looks like KDE.
KDE 4.0 (January 2008)
Windows Vista (April 2009)
I agree with jai, both in this and in any other desktop environment (even windows to the best of its ability), tuneralo 'is' its essence.
Windows Bosta ... sorry, Windows Vista, is from 2007. The one from 2009 is Windows Semen, I mean, Windows Seven. And now Windows Chocho is about to come out, I mean, Windows Eight.
I always see many KDE desktops that are highly customized and look excellent. The truth is that nothing to do with how they come "standard" ... for example I tested the chakra livecd and I did not like it at all.
Anyone who knows could make a good KDE customization post, right? 🙂
I support the notion. I've always wanted to try KDE but what they say above is true, it has a slight resemblance to Windows that bothers me. A post on how to modify KDE to achieve a better appearance would be very good.
The customization options are almost endless. A KDE can be arranged to look like Gnome 2, Gnome Shell, Unity, Mac, Windows or whatever you can think of. With the right plasma themes, a nice QtCurve or Bespin theme, and cool icons, the mix changes a lot.
Good, I suppose you comment on it mainly because the panel is at the bottom, the start menu button, the tasks, etc. All those positions remind you of Windows. I do not know if the gray of the windows by default also reminds you.
On the web you have many examples of how to change KDE to suit what you want. I suppose that when you tinker or take a look at it, it will give you an idea of what you can change in KDE ... I'll give you a few ... and if you have any questions I can help you out ..

As you can see, if by default Windows seems too much to you ... there is nothing that you cannot touch in KDE and in 2 or 3 minutes you will have it as you please. So when I hear someone complain about KDE about the appearance, I don't quite understand it ... You can complain about nepomuk, that it consumes you on your machine, that it has too many options ... but about the appearance? Gentlemen, we are on linux, it is a sin not to mess with the options and leave things to our liking. 😉
Thanks for the links, right now I have an eye on you 😀
Some may indicate some resource a little obsolete in KDE at the moment (for example, the Daisy dock does not work with KDE 4.8 (you would need fancy task or elegant tasks), etc ... but the idea is there, in that many things can be changed. Since I discovered Bespin, you can do wonders. The other day I read someone who complained about the bluish glow of the windows, because he is bothered by the icons that drop, etc ... when all that can be easily configured (well, sometimes digging a bit) in KDE's appearance options.
The only thing I don't like about KDE is that it doesn't facilitate a complete change, that is IConos + KDM + Color Scheme + Window Decoration + Plasma Theme, and that you have to change them one by one, whatever leave one, you have a weird pastiche left ... Malcer made a little program to put the Caledonia theme to change everything at once .. That should be the way to customize KDE in the future .. but hey, time to time!
+1
Incidentally, I was commenting the same thing to my colleague Sandy. While on the one hand this can be helpful, on the other it makes customization a bit more complicated.
KDE is a bit more complicated, because it has many more options than all the other environments ... that is, it allows you to do A LOT more.
And Gnome2 that looks like Mac ... Unity that looks like the old Darwin from Apple ... etc etc 🙂
In the end, they all look like something HAHA.
Well… 😀… I personally have put up a lot of posts about changing a lot of KDE things 😉
https://blog.desdelinux.net/tag/kde/
Take a look and you won't regret it.
custom ... sounds better.
"Go to hell and install KDE." Typical xD
will it last longer than when you used xubuntu?
No idea 😀
I bet it doesn't make it to the KDE month
I am just testing the user agent, ignore the comment xD
Because of the processor you mention, it is a server, right?
You can say yes 😀 but incredibly it's just a workstation.
Where do they sell those workstations? I want that, hahaha, here those processors are used in HP servers
the desktop looks great. where did you get the wallpaper?
Well, KDE already brought it 😀
seriously???? Well, surely for Debian, because Chakra is not there.
I think you have to install kde-wallpapers or kdeartwork-wallpapers.
regards
Exact.
take note. thanks!
thanks elav, I'm following the advice and I installed with kde included and the computer is very fast, I need to solve the grub that the windows does not recognize me, to see in the forum it will touch
Papo, when do you lay the egg? KDE, XFCE, what will you use in 2013? Make an almanac with the days that you change the desktop environment, I think you will need a few more months ... Hahahahaha, the tapestry is good! xD
Hahaha but if I've been with more than a year Xfce.. I think ¬¬ hahaha
hello good morning with the commands. os-prober and update-grub solutions the windows thing, I'm happy with debian
:3
One question, what is that fund called? I've been looking for it and I can't find it, I really liked it.
Vector sunset, I found it
I tell you I like kde, it was my first desktop but suse and her problems with ati and kubuntu and her laziness drove me away at the time, now I come back with fedora and debian and I think I stay a long time because the gnome shell looks like those things that they put the horses in the eyes so that they do not see to the sides! It's sad because gnome 2 adapts to you, not you to him as gnome 3. Guys, I was also encouraged by this page, thanks for that
How can I make firefox look the same as in the photo?
Greetings and very good blog!
You must install a theme to Firefox (from Plugins or via Plugins site) called Oxygen KDE.
Oh !! Thank you very much for your answer.
Greetings.
I agree, the wallpaper is incredible!
One question, I have always considered that KDE was to have a loaded desktop. What are the advantages when it is so minimalist?
Don't get me wrong, I really like minimalism!
I'm happy for you and for your computer, very good decision, I have a vaio core i3, and with Linux Mint 13 Maya from which I am, and it flies with Mate since it is part of my 3 favorite environments>
KDE
Lxde
Mate
and sometimes Xfce.
Awesome¡¡¡ Oo @NinjaUrbano puts the third party, not bad, in the end I will not be so weird, you were deluxe elav¡¡ but I write from a pentium 4 so no xDD Greetings machines ¡¡¡
Wow, lucky Elav! I wish I had such a machine. Meanwhile, long live the little mouse ^^
I was lucky if the machine was my property hahahaha
Funny, I can only use debian in virtualbox, my laptop doesn't install, weird.
I want to start using linux but how and where do I start this very nice image that helps !!!
