Thanks to the compa Yoyo we can install Gimp 2.8 guiding us by the tutorial that we can find in this link. The steps are simple:
Installing the necessary dependencies:
We open a terminal and put:
$ sudo aptitude install intltool libpng12-dev libglib2.0-dev libatk1.0-dev libpango1.0-dev libfontconfig1-dev libcairo2-dev libgtk2.0-dev libtiff4-dev python-gtk2-dev libatk1.0-dev librsvg2-bin libwebkit-dev librsvg2-2.0-cil-dev libjasper-dev liblcms-dev libexif-dev libwmf-dev python2.7-dev
EYE: This will install a few MONO dependencies, so if you don't like this technology, you can finish the tutorial tutorial
We need to compile babl and gegl because the version that we have in the repositories of Testing is lower than that Gimp 2.8 needs to.
Compiling the necessary libraries:
$ wget ftp://ftp.gtk.org/pub/babl/0.1/babl-0.1.10.tar.bz2
$ tar -xvf babl-0.1.10.tar.bz2
$ cd babl-0.1.10/
$ ./configure
$ make
$ sudo make install
$ wget ftp://ftp.gimp.org/pub/gegl/0.2/gegl-0.2.0.tar.bz2
$ tar -xvf gegl-0.2.0.tar.bz2
$ cd gegl-0.2.0/
$ ./configure
$ make
$ sudo make install
We uninstall Gimp 2.6
$ sudo aptitude purge libgimp2.0 gimp gimp-help-en gimp-help-common gimp-data libgimp2.0
We compile and install Gimp 2.8
$ wget ftp://ftp.gimp.org/pub/gimp/v2.8/gimp-2.8.0.tar.bz2
$ tar -xvf gimp-2.8.0.tar.bz2
$ cd gimp-2.8.0
$ ./configure
$ make
$ sudo make install
Ready. It should work, although if it doesn't start Gimp Using the icon in the menu, we can solve it like this:
We add in our file ~/.bashrc the following lines:
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/local/lib
env LD_LIBRARY_PATH="/usr/local/lib" gimp
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH
Although honestly I have not tried. The solution was given to me by the compa Yoyo and they can see here.
I'm using it, with a new splash and finally in single window mode! 😀
The improvements look spectacular, but I'll wait for the PPA. Like the new XFCE 4.10
😀
I have a problem
«Dimentio gimp-2.8.0 # make
make: *** No target specified and no makefile found. High."
;TO;
ok ... I think I can see what happens, when I do the step of gegl-0.2.0 when I do "make" it throws me many errors and many "coming out of the fulana mask" that is ... I don't know what happens that I can't install the gegl -0.2.0, says something like that can't create makefile or something very similar; ^;
elva I highly recommend creating packages and not using the make && make install method because apt cannot handle these installations, that LD_LIBRARY_PATH thing can end up making your package manager dizzy.

Hahahaha he goes Hahaha
It is already in the Arch repositories !!
God give me strength to avoid the temptation to go back to Arch .. LOL !!!
A partition apart of some 10-15GB and you already have arch without removing debian? Why do not do it?
To install a package seems silly to me ...
What a relief the single window mode, in Unity it was re-complicated with version 2.6
Running full on my Debian testing KDE 4.7.4
Comment that the solution ~ / .bashrc so that Gimp starts from its icon works perfectly 😉
All the best
I'm trying to compile in osx without x11, I'll tell you the result in a few hours.

Sometimes I think you're more of an asshole than you appear xd
You have to say things about Mac around here ... It only occurs to you.
but he was talking about gimp xd
¬_¬ … No offense, I won't repeat it.
It doesn't bother me
I do not understand that eternal war of systems….
Well now I'm going to post from my Mac so that it is reflected in the user agent, ala !!!
Let's respect and we will be respected 😉
wow xD
pandev92
I support you, compadre, the Linuxeros Maqueros, we also have them, we must be united 😉
I Have a Dream ...
pandev92, I am interested in compiling it without the X11, when you have it I would appreciate it if you would communicate it, thanks
And with regard to Courage, do not count it, it will be the envy of not being able to have a mac, or am I wrong?
Ok keopety, today I tried but because of a dependency I couldn't, I'm talking to the skinners to see what they tell me, I'll tell you.
For gimp 2.6 there is the precompiled package http://sourceforge.net/projects/gimp-app/files/gimp-app/
without x11 naturally.
Ok, thanks, I'll be attentive.
all the best
You have a few that problem, and you have to wait for it to be officially included in some distros and in others wait a bit
I had one
Gimp 2.8 What is it for?
Then someone will tell you and it will happen as in the other post
debate a bit, sanely, just that :)
You're joking, right?
no. obviously I know that it is gimp and the question is very textual, I want to know what applications can be given to gimp.
http://www.tower.com/tower_search/search_3_1_b.cfm?keywords=gimp&div_id=1&cat101=8
… The most I could see was, go from novice to professional using gimp. None that professional area covers.
And compile it ??? Well no, I saw it over the top and gave up aside that I don't have much free time, I went for the easy option, install the fedora 17 beta and download it from the repositories.
Now testing it I can honestly say that it is very stable, I don't know if it has gpu support but it handles large images very well. What they have done is "well done" and correctly organized better than krita (who suffers from the organizational tragedy of kde) and they improved the color handling a lot, because 2.6 was very bad. And an interesting layer selection system that is one of Photoshop's strengths.
Amateur and beginner uses are broad, retouching conventional photographs, photo montages, graphic design, illustration ...
The professional; Web design, digital media (video, multimedia) or using external applications to convert files ... It is limited by the lack of superior supports, the lack of CMYK color profiles for printing, and color palettes for illustration, etc ...
In short, it is still a long way from being a professional option.

etc ...
Your friend Alberto thinks differently about Krita:
http://noesbuenosersincero.blogspot.com.es/2010/12/krita-o-lo-que-gimp-deberia-ser.html
My friend? Hahaha no! Rather, he has vetoed me some comments for not agreeing with him or for not telling him that he is bitter ... well.
That said, for the web very well, for the printing press it is not functional, nobody is going to calibrate a pc to risk exporting with a plugin.
That Krita is superior, I think that is not disputed, but it has its strange little things.
So that guy censors comments, ... Well, I'm not surprised. As I answered you the other day, you need to get more fiber.
I mean people, Gimp 2.8 depends somewhat on MONO ¿. Or you can understand that, maybe this just happens to compile it in testing ...
I had already installed it with another method but the only window did not come out, let's see if with this method it already pulls well 😀 thanks
By default, it starts in traditional multi-window mode.
You have to go to the "Windows" menu and activate the single window option.
The last time I tried to install a different version of GIMP than the official repositories offered, I ran out of GIMP. There was no way to go back, or purge or anything at all…. I ran out of GIMP until my next reinstall. In my LTS I will not touch anything…. it has to be there until the next LTS. That is if it does not take too long to appear as an update.
HAHAHA similar happens to me. I use Debian (Testing) and… I can wait for Gimp 2.8 what it takes, I'm not in such a hurry to compile myself 🙂
Could you use a ppa to test?
Technically I think it can, in fact I think elav had managed to install it like this ... but, I prefer not to. I try to keep my system 100% clean, no gaffes or any kind of bugs or something like that hahaha.
For what I use Gimp, I don't mind waiting 1 more month until 2.8 enters the Debian repos tests testing
regards
You have to install the libabl devel to be able to compile the gegl properly
