Spelling checker
In case you have installed OpenOffice / Libreoffice and it does not come with the spell checker (dictionary + synonyms) or the hyphen corresponding to the language of your preference, you simply have to install it by hand. There are two ways to do this: use one of the dictionaries that are already included in the repositories of most distributions (such as myspell, hunspell, etc.) or, failing that, look for a dictionary on the Extensions website. OpenOffice / LibreOffice and install it, as if it were an extension.
a) Install a MySpell dictionary
In Ubuntu this is super easy. For example, to install the Myspell package corresponding to the Spanish dictionary, you just have to open a terminal and enter the following command:
sudo apt-get install myspell -en
b) Install a dictionary as an extension
1.- Search and download the extension corresponding to the dictionary of your choice.
2.- Ir a Tools> Extension Management> Add and select the OXT file downloaded in the previous step.
Grammar checker
LanguageTool is probably the best style and grammar checker for OpenOffice / LibreOffice. Includes support for English, Spanish, French, German, Polish, Dutch, Romanian, and many other languages. It does a good job of catching mistakes that a typical spell checker would miss, such as word repetition, gender and number match, etc.
Installation
1.- Download the LanguageTool extension (OXT file)
2.- Ir a Tools> Extension Management> Add and select the OXT file downloaded in the previous step.
3.- Make sure you have the OpenOffice / LibreOffice Java package installed.
In the case of Ubuntu + LibreOffice, you just have to install the package libreoffice-java-common
sudo apt-get install libreoffice-java-common
myspell-spanish is the package name if they use openSuSE
Good! Thanks for the contribution!
I like LanguageTool a lot, but it needs several more rules in the Spanish language. If anyone knows where to find more rules, it would be great if they said it this way. Otherwise we should create, I don't know, a forum thread where we can all create more rules and improve it.
At the moment, it worked quite well for me ... especially when writing in English.

“Extension manager

Hello Jesus!
I think it would be better if you ask this question in our question and answer service called Ask DesdeLinux so that the whole community can help you with your problem.
A hug, Pablo.
Having the myspell and the dictionary is enough for you to have the spell check active, because I did the steps and everything worked. But I have the same problem as you when trying to add the LenguageTool extension to libreoffice and I have been looking and I do not find much information, only that the java options box must be activated (which I already have)
How to install the spell checker step by step in Ubuntu?
can someone please help me?
Thank you
Personally I had a lot of problems finding the extension of the Spanish dictionary because on the libreoffice page the extensions of the Spanish dictionaries do not have a download link, and the one I found had it but it was a zip and the format for the extensions should be OTX to make them work. It served me as an OpenOffice extension and I was able to install the dictionary, I leave you the link >> http://extensions.openoffice.org/project/es_ANY-dicts You only download and at the end you double click on the file and you will get a warning where you will confirm if you want to install as an extension in libreoffice or not. You can also do it through the path indicated here in the post Tools> Extension management> Add and select the OXT file, which in this case would be the dictionary. I hope it serves you like me
thanks this is what i was looking for
I have problems with the LanguageTool extension, this is the error that I get every time I want to activate said extension.

I have Linux Deepin how can I put a spell checker? Can anybody help me.
To complete the article, it would be necessary to add the dictionary of synonyms, in the case of Spanish in Spain it would be with the extension of Open Linguistic Resources: http://extensions.openoffice.org/en/projectrelease/diccionario-de-correccion-ortografica-separacion-silabica-y-sinonimos-en-espanol-67
