Jim Whitehurst "Democracy is not always the best choice in business"

The quote is a conclusion of the sayings of Jim WhitehurstCEO Red Hat in an interview for the NY Times.

“Attracting people for decision-making means that decision-making can last forever. But once you make up your mind, you have the perfect execution because everyone was drawn in. They know what you are doing and they know why you are doing it. "

Whitehurst says there is a culture of meritocracy at Red Hat, a provider of Linux and open source technology. Everyone is capable of expressing their opinions, but that does not mean that there has to be consensus on every decision.

After letting everyone debate, Whitehurst takes everything into consideration and then makes a decision. And although everyone will not necessarily agree with the final decision, they will be glad that they had a chance to put their grain of sand.

«A voice does not mean the right to decide. It does not mean that you have a word in an answer. But at least you have a vehicle for an opinion to be heard. "

You are absolutely right. In business matters, decision-making would not be simple or dynamic if it depended solely on a democratic participatory scheme. Nor is it to determine responsibilities. It is always better that participation is at a first level, with the suggestion of proposals, debate and conclusions; and already, in a second level, the operative part, is in charge of enriching the work according to what was contributed and the directions that have been approved according to the expectations and the socio-economic objective of the company.

Exactly, he is absolutely right in what he says, otherwise, everything would be chaos.

this is what mark shuttleworth should do

My question is, does Mark Shuttleworth not do it?
And it's not that I'm a defender of yours or Canonical, it's that I think Mark was one of the first to say that Ubuntu was not a democracy, the vast majority of distros are not, and they are doing quite well, but that's not removes that they can discuss issues.

      1.    Courage said

It doesn't, what $ huttlegates could do is create polls with the possible changes, so there is no chaos and it takes the community into account.

He already does some surveys but not many and you know if they pay much attention.
An example would be from recently when they did a survey to debate whether when you have two monitors there are two unity bars or one.
In the end it has been left in that by default there will only be one but it can be configured so that there are two.

Hey friend, I think the married lawsuit that you bring with Uncle Mark is over and you should overcome XD, as an example I give you the Gnome Classic that will make its appearance in Ubuntu 12.04. As you wish to see it, but I think Canonical had to swallow its pride by giving that option to the user as an alternative to Unity. Do you have any idea how many users were begging for something like that? Now where is that from: "This is not a democracy"?

          1.    Courage said

It gives me that it is a coincidence.

          2.    jamin samuel said

this is broder .. canonical had to swallow his own pride .. the appearance of gnome classic indicates that his experiment (unity) does not please his users and that he has to recover you since most of them went to linux mint.

These 3 months are going to be a bit interesting because Ubuntu 12.04 will be able to install gnome classic but also this cinnamon that is gradually getting mature and as in May it is expected to be completely ready with the launch of Linux mint 13, then there will be a fight between the gnome classic from ubuntu against the cinnamon from linux mint ..

there is expectation to see which one will perform better, both in performance and also in usability

          3.    elav <° Linux said

That is more than proven. Neither Ubuntu, nor any other distribution apply democracy as decision-making when defining what is included or excluded. It is as TDE said if I am not mistaken, if the opinion and criteria of each user were taken into account, in the end the distribution would no longer exist.

Leave the ambition ... if your pc already worked normally with your ram memories and your motherboard and your micro processor, why change everything when all you need is a 160GB hard drive and that's it?

Uncle Mark really doesn't seem to like a lot of people around here. The difficult thing is to accept that Ubuntu is showing that Linux can be taken to the desired levels. They are trying to create their own identity with Unity, which brings together what a semantic desktop is, Unity represents what evolution is on the desktop, a revolutionary desktop, the same as Gnome Shell. If someone does not feel good about Unity because they have to choose, I do not believe that Mark is a Bill Gates or Canonical a Microsoft, Canonical is creating a strong, competitive product, Ubuntu will continue to grow in the coming years. I wish there were a few Mark Shuttleworths in free software.
    Greetings.

      Ubuntuous detected

      We go by parts:

The difficult thing is to accept that Ubuntu is showing that Linux can be taken to the levels that you want

Seriously? As far as I know easy Linux existed with distros like Mandrake (current Mandriva) or Kororaa before Winbuntu existed

They are trying to create their own identity with Unity, which brings together what a semantic desktop is, Unity represents what evolution is on the desktop, a revolutionary desktop

Revolutionary? It may be, but ... Who likes Unity apart from 4 cats?

If someone does not feel good about Unity because they have to choose, I do not think Mark is a Bill Gates or Canonical a Microsoft

Of course, Canoni $ oft is not Mircosoft, rather they are worse than Microsoft because at least Microsoft is not promulgating freedom to violate it as Canoni $ oft does.

Canonical is creating a strong, competitive product, Ubuntu will continue to grow for years to come

Sorry to correct you but Ubuntu is weak due to its dubious quality. IF it will continue to grow, it is because of OEM installations, that $ huttlegates stop companies to pre-install Winbuntu, or because of the tendency of users (like you) to say Linux = Ubuntu.

      Ubuntu is pure propaganda

I wish and there were a few Mark Shuttleworths in free software

Say yes, so there are monopolies and system closures to sell them at € 300
