Leon, the new browser of the Evolve OS project

About Evolve OS

evolve OS is the project that started Ikey doherty after ditching a bunch of people with SolusOS and whose main characteristic (as a star product) is a Desktop Environment called Budgie. Apparently the project that started as "an experiment" has been maintained and is already incorporating its own applications, in this case a new minimalist browser that, how could it be otherwise, uses Webkit.

Leon

What is the Leon browser?

The name of the browser is Leon, at least for now, and as you can see in the screenshot it stands out mainly for having a minimalist interface. But for what other browser? According to what they tell us on Leon's page on Github, none of the existing browsers adapt to the philosophy of "having everything organized" that he boasts evolve OS. Also evolve OS is built on Vala, and Epiphany for example is written in C. The idea is not to use GNOME applications, and if necessary, use the least amount possible.

In the beginning maintaining Leon should not be difficult since all the heavy lifting is done by Webkit, and nothing, the developers of evolve OS they just decided to have their own browser. Good for that, another alternative, although that is, only for Desktop Environments that use GTK3Well, I installed it in KDE and it looks horrible.

How to install Leon?

Before showing how to install it, it should be clarified that the project is still under development and may have problems. However, if you are using evolve OS and you want to try, you just have to open a terminal and put:

sudo pisi update-repo sudo pisi install leon

ArchLinux users can install it via AUR with the command:

$ yaourt -S leon-git

As a last detail, according to its developers, there are plans to integrate new and unique features in Leon that do not exist in other browsers. These features will be directly dependent on other libraries and applications evolve OS, so to enjoy them we have to use that distribution.

Someone to confirm if my impression is true: Leon is riding on Breach.cc?

«After dumping a lot of people with SolusOS»
At the time I said that this was going to happen and they paid no attention to me. Now I wonder, what guarantees that I do not blow another crowd with this?
There comes a time when diversity only makes things worse.

In any case, you have the right to do whatever you want with your time. Nobody forces you to use it

It is a risk that EvolveOS users have to take. I do not trust Ikey in itself, although of course, everyone deserves a second chance.

Well, in that you are right. Let's wait to see what happens 🙂

I'm not complaining that there are alternatives, but if something is urgently missing in the Linux world, it's a decent QT browser.

There we are 100% in agreement. Rekonq did not quite land, Qupzilla has but something is missing, I do not know.

Although .. this, hehehe, there may be surprises 😀

I think there was a project to port Firefox to QT, it seems to me that Blue Systems financed it but I don't know what happened.

This is more of a 'I'm making an operating system, I don't want to be confused with a modified existing distro so I'll create my own browser that no one will use and everyone will replace with Firefox or Chrome ... just to say it's a totally innovative and original operating system that he needs nothing from others ”, if that.

And not only did he ditch a ton of people, he also got new gear from donations from the SolusOS user community.
Zero credibility with your new EvolveOS.

I prefer things that are always there, and take care of other issues. (Debian, Dolphin, KDE, Kate, Chrome, etc)

The novel thing would have been that it used the Firefox engine with QT

Well, I'll wait for it to mature to see how it works, but currently I'm very hooked on Firefox and for other things I use Google Chrome, sometimes I use Midorí, but its incredible incompatibility with many pages, enemy of flash, and the lack of spell checker. 🙁 But I still like him.

I loved the browser bar, that's the future: less is more. The more the bar occupies, the less space I will have in the visual of the page I am visiting. In Opera 12 years ago I have personalized it like this: http://www.zimagez.com/zimage/capturadepantalla-200115-120528.php

I think the evolve project is very good because it is simple and attractive, but could you explain to me how to install word processors such as libreoffice, how to add repositories in evolve? Thank you

You have to see if LibreOffice appears in the Evolve repositories.
