LibreOffice 6.2 arrives in February without support for 32-bit architecture

The second major update in the LibreOffice 6 series, LibreOffice 6.2, has as tentative departure date the first days of February and it is probably the first version of this acclaimed office suite to remove support for 32-bit architectures.

While The Document Foundation assures users of its suite that 32-bit versions of its past editions will always be available on the official website, the company mentions that there will be no more future builds for this architecture.

We have yet to see if LibreOffice 6.2 will be the first version of this suite without 32-bit compilations because TDF hasn't made it official yet. Current builds are still offered in 32-bit.

In addition to 32-bit builds, the company also decided to leave behind the KDE 4 and GTK + 2 VCL backend, which will be removed from LibreOffice 6.2.

The first bug hunt took place on October 22

LibreOffice 6.2 will introduce many changes and enhancements throughout the suite, including better export and import of PPT and PPTX documents, better rendering of animations, basic support for KDE Plasma 5 accessibility, as well as several changes for Writer, Calc, Impress and Draw.

Meanwhile, the LibreOffice team joined forces to conduct the first bug hunt on October 22 using the first alpha version of LibreOffice 6.2. If you are interested in knowing more about this event you can consult the wiki where is all the information.

There is still no date for the second bug hunt, but it will surely be next month with the release of a second alpha version.

It was unavoidable… after most distributions did it, software packages would surely follow. In less than a year, 32 Bit technology will cease to exist completely.
