Linus Torvalds awarded with the Millenium Technology Prize 2012

The creator of Kernel de Linux, Together with Dr Shinya Yamanaka, has been the winner nothing more and nothing less, than one million euros, which is the award that gives The Finnish Academy of Technology.

Linus Torvalds, Finland / USA

In recognition of his creation of a new open source operating system for computers using the Linux kernel. The free availability of Linux on the Web quickly caused a chain reaction leading to further development and tuning, the equivalent of 73.000 man-years. Today millions use computers, smartphones and digital video recorders like TiVo that run on Linux. Linus Torvald's accomplishments have had a major impact on the development of shared software, networking, and the openness of the web, making it accessible not just to millions, if not billions.

Said Academy delivers annually every two years the Millennium Technology Prize, which has been equivalent to Peace Nobel, but in this case in Technology according to Jim Zemlin, executive director of the Linux Foundation. The ceremony to be held on June 13 in Helsinki.

Well deserved the million !!!

A deserved recognition to the man to whom we owe the freedom at our desks.

I'm happy for Torvalds, because without a doubt he has done a lot for SL. Now, things in their place: to whom we owe the freedom at our desks is, in the first instance, R. Stallman (et al.). Torvalds got on the ship after Stallman started the crusade for the SL.

Man, but at that time I think they didn't even know each other. That is, Linus I don't think I did it following the steps of stallman Or if?

Let's say that history speaks for itself: R. Stallman began developing the free GNU system in 1984. In 1990, L. Torvalds developed Linux, inspired by Minix. And it turned out that this kernel worked very well with the rest of the GNU system, unlike the kernel that this same system was trying to develop (the eternal Hurd project). In 1991 Torvalds decided to release the code, which led to the merger of these two free projects to which we owe hundreds of distros: GNU / Linux.
But beware, I don't detract from Linus Torvalds. The guy has been at the forefront of kernel development, doing an impeccable job.
The only thing I seek is to do justice to the previous comment referring to freedom, because this, as the guiding principle of the SL movement, comes from the GNU proposal, which was later added to Linux (a project much more linked to the Open Source movement , by the way).
          Greetings.

In the words of Linus himself in his 1991 email:

«I'm doing a (free) operating system (just a hobby, won't be big and professional like gnu) for 386 (486) AT clones. This has been brewing since April, and is starting to get ready. I'd like any feedback on things people like / dislike in minix, as my OS resembles it somewhat (same physical layout of the file-system (due to practical reasons) among other things).

I've currently ported bash (1.08) and gcc (1.40), and things seem to work. This implies that I'll get something practical within a few months »

It seems that I was looking for something similar to GNU but not so serious.
And in the end what a piece of hooby that was sought XD

The thing about Linus getting on the boat later squeaks a bit (although you can see that you mean the "free software" boat). Linus checked that his kernel matched well with the GNU tools. Stallman and his men were unable to create a proper nucleus of their own. It was a marriage of convenience. The FSF are looking forward to cheating on Hurd.

Donate it to me and then I make a distribution of 0,1% destined for Desde Linux and the rest for me hahahaha
