Linus Torvalds prefers a Linux standardization and Gnome and KDE could lead to this

In his own way, Linus Torvalds, less than a year ago, returned to this statement "Linux crashed on the desktop" And it is that put more gently, had recognized that the famous open source operating system "struggled to win on the desktop", and made sure to clarify that the underlying issue with Linux is ecosystem fragmentation.

In fact, In this strict sense, Linux is basically a kernel, that is, that part of the operating system that manages the computer's resources and serves as a communication bridge between the various components (hardware and software).

It is the invisible part of the operating system. In a broad sense, to speak of Linux is to refer to any operating system that is based on the kernel; This is one of the aspects that makes this operating system unique, since the user can join between 319 variations or distributions if we stick to the LiveCD list.

For everyone, the variety of options is already confusing. If we still have to take into account the fact that the user still has to choose between Gnome, XFCE, LXDE, KDE, Cinnamon, Mate (and just to speak of the most popular desktop environments) and even worse if we add the managers from windows (window manager) to this extensive list.

“I wish the community would do more to move towards a standardized desktop offering, running on all variants of the operating system. Personally, I am very upset by how much this Linux fragmentation has slowed down on the desktop, "said Linus Torvalds.

It seems that the attractiveness of Linus Torvalds does not fall on the ears of the deaf. In fact, According to recent developments, the Gnome and KDE foundations have already spoken and they have opened the guidelines to look in this direction to which the creator of the Linux Kernel points and wishes, since the developers of these desktop environments will join forces.

And it is that from November 12 to 15 of the current year, they organize the Linux Applications Summit (THE). The initiative aims to federate the efforts of both communities to build an ecosystem of applications that transcends the different distributions and creates a market opening for all.

"LAS aims to encourage the creation of quality applications, seek compensation opportunities for open source developers, and foster a burgeoning market for the Linux operating system," he says.

Before this year, the event was called the Free Application Summit. In 2018, the GNOME Foundation acted as the host. Once again, it was about creating a synergy of community efforts to encourage others to develop applications for free operating systems. This year, the highlight is the collaboration of the two foundations as noted by their respective leaders.

“LAS is one of many steps towards a successful office ecosystem. By partnering with KDE, we highlight the desire to build the kind of application ecosystem that proves that open source and open source software is important; the technology and organization we put in place to achieve this is valuable and necessary, "said the CEO of the Gnome Foundation.

“Over the years we have created excellent solutions that are used by third parties around the world. It is by working together that we can be greater than the sum of the parts. With GNOME, relying on the collaboration of numerous distributions and application developers, we will have the opportunity to work together, share our perspectives and offer the platform on which the next generation of solutions will be built. Said the vice president of KDE.

Therefore, it is almost safe to say that the job they will be busy with will be to offer an offer that should involve several or all distributions, second, and more obvious, towards a unified offering in the application ecosystem.

Although this movement will not be the first of its kind, as many proposals have been made about it and have been forgotten, even though for today the technologies used in applications such as Snap, Flatpak or AppImage can be one of the foundations for a unified application offering.

I find it very naive to believe that gnu-linux lost the desktop battle because of so-called fragmentation and not because it faced monsters of the stature of Microsoft and Apple with their commercial structures established on a planetary scale. Gnu-linux works perfectly on the desktop and the freedom is total, you can choose the distribution that you like and start it with hardly any computer skills, you have tons of tools at your disposal. I do not see any failure on the desktop, perhaps it is the user who should think of the computer as a more complex machine than a mere appliance.

it is a losing battle from the point of view that it is not a system oriented to morning activities due to its level of complexity an average user would always opt for windows and mac, so if it is true that linux is no longer as complex as before but in the same way it continues to have a much higher learning curve than its rivals, in addition to this I think you are wrong in the definition that a user buys a mere computer as an appliance since respecting your opinion I think there is a lack of objectivity since the average user does not have knowledge of systems and is not interested in having it, the only thing he wants is for the pc to give him simplicity to solve more complex problems and at the same time its usefulness to be practical ... if they do not seek to be an advanced user

    Dear,
In systems, engineers and developers create the most wonderful and complex structures, just to provide a solution to the user, so without disrespecting the user does not fail but something else, it may be the approach, the mechanisms, what I know, but never the end user to whom the work is intended, I believe the approach should be directed to the user without knowledge of anything, packaged in a simple outline for quick and efficient installation with the possibility of twisting rules, a fundamental rule by which we we place here,
    Kind regards dear.

Let's see if and no, I explain to me that there are 100.000 distributions each for a different task or that each application is for a different interface (for example) does not bother me so much.
What really bothers me is that for example for the system there are two audio servers that get along like the dog and the cat (I speak of course this of Jackd and Pulse audio), that when you suspend the Jackdbus equipment (audio server demon before mentioned) is not suspended and therefore when you recover the session you are left without audio, and on the other hand that the programs do not receive a facelift (Rosegarden please, reminds me of the 80s cubase of the Atari ST, worth the redundancy came out first for this platform before PC), that most midi sequencers do not have a proper score viewer implemented (RoseGarden calls a third party program instead of scores like Denemo or NoteEdit being implemented in the same program ) or not implementing fluidsynth in the same MIDI sequencers, in short (and I do not follow because otherwise the message would be too long) those incongruities will be what prevents GNU / Linux from advancing all types of users .
From my point of view, implement Jackd with Pulse in a transparent way and then configure it from the control panel if you want to use the two audio systems or only one at the end user, or to LMMS implement a score viewer like Denemo and solve it some bugs would be perfect for me for example)
    PS Sorry about the billet.
