Linux Deepin: another Ubuntu-based Distribution with Gnome Shell

En Webupd8 our friend Andrew makes a Review of a distribution based on Ubuntu 11.10 which comes by default with Gnome Shell and he calls himself linux deepin.

This distribution is maintained by Chinese users and therefore, it is available in Chinese and English, although after it is installed, of course, other languages can be added. Incorporates GnomeShell 3.2.1 and some extensions that give the Desktop Environment a very peculiar look. In fact, if you put the top panel for the bottom, I would say that it is Windows 7 😀

Deepin It incorporates a series of extensions to achieve its appearance, some of its own. With all of them it can be obtained as a result that the Dash not work (Hide Dash) and that the desks are shown on the left, the opposite of Gnome Shell. linux deepin uses zukitwo with green tones, as well as a modification with the same tone to Faenza.

A point in favor of this Distribution is that it incorporates its own Software Center. Incorporate applications like LibreOffice, Firefox, Thunderbird, GNOME Mplayer, Deadbeef (my favorite audio player), Iptux, uGet, GNOME Tweak Tool, among other. It also incorporates pre-installed codecs and Adobe Flash.

You can download linux deepin from this linkIf they do and try it, they will tell me later how it went 😀

To vary one more ubuntu-based distro. It reminded me of ubuntu.gnome shell remix, although in this case the appearance is much more careful in addition to having its own characteristics to be able to differentiate itself from the rest and that make it a very interesting option to try.

i put the top panel to the bottom, i would say its windows 7

So I can download it for two things:

    - Be based on Winbuntu
    - It's not original

I would say that "another distro more" ... but it is seen that they dedicate time to the visual style and I give them points for that; also, if you want to make the interaction of a Linux system with the user easier, it is better to show them familiar 'little things', so the transfer from win7 to this distro would be less tortuous if that is what these Chinese are planning.

For being a Gnome, it is attractive but the bar is a bit windolera, which I don't like, like any other copy

I still have a big question ... why if Unity is milk no distro derived from Ubuntu that shell?

To me the truth is the appearance of linux deepin I find it elegant and very well worked. An excellent alternative seems to me.

Good question. Remember that Unity It has an objective that is quite different from the traditional Desktop, maybe that's why the rest of the distributions (which are not interested in covering beyond the PC) are not interested in using that Shell ..

      1.    Tina Toledo said

Exact! That's the point ... it seems to me that this is going to be the point in favor of those distros, maintaining a desktop that IS DESIGNED to work with a desktop PC. The project Luna, Elementary It is also going that way, which is an indicator that we are not a "group-of-retrogrades" who still like to use a practical desk.

Does the fact that it is "milk" necessarily implies that the other distros must host it?

The problem to move Unity to other distros may be due to the re-patching that Canonical does to Gnome 3. It seems that moving it is not as easy as packing the code and uploading it to the repositories. But… Unity is milk! Have you seen it on Ubuntu TV and Ubuntu for Android?

Agree with Elav and his comment. What Elav points out seems to me very accurate to understand why many of us are starting to like Unity (after the improvements in stability and configuration). Those of us who see possibilities beyond the Desktop, we like Unity for what it implies. Is there something wrong with it so that it is not conceived as milk? The concept of the Lens looks like milk to me, for example.

I like the look of Linux Deepin, it looks great. What I see, aesthetically, I find it more beautiful than Cinnamon. I'm going to try it to see how it goes.

        Hello people.

It is the best aesthetically ever seen, you also have your own music and video players very well designed in a professional style, it is on the right track, I would even say that it will compete directly with LINUX MINT with its CINNAMON, right now I am writing to you desde LINUX DEEPIN, this makes it much easier for a user who comes from the other side, congratulations to the CHINESE……THANK YOU…

I read about it in December, on OMG! Ubuntu! And from what I see it has a pretty nice software center (available to download and install in Debian / Ubuntu, I think their official page says).
