Linux Mint 14 «Nadia» RC available

I do not know why these news no longer cause me the same emotion as before, perhaps, because Linux Mint It hasn't caught my attention in a long time. But of course, we are not all the same and I know that this distribution has a lot of followers.

Well, it is already available for download Linux Mint 14 «Nadia» RC.

And it is that, to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, at least I find in Cinnamon an excellent alternative to Gnome Shell, in fact, Cinnamon I love it .. And in this RC, which corresponds to Ubuntu 12.10, Cinnamon arrives in its latest version (1.6).

Linux Mint has adopted MATE as an alternative to Cinnamon, in addition, to please all those users who feel comfortable with Gnome 2. In this release, there are improvements to MATE as they are, the option to configure notifications:

MATE now includes its own character map, alt tab works much faster using Marco as the composition manager, and improvements to Case as they are, a toggle button to show and edit the path and a new button to compare files in the dialog when there is a conflict between files:

A MDM it received great attention and comes with exciting new features. Now supports themes from GDM2, and about 30 of them are installed by default in Linux Mint 14, in addition to those that can be found at Gnome-look.org. MDM now also offers improved support for user lists:

The Software Manager received a host of improvements "under the hood." Aptdaemon (that I have problems in previous versions), and now you have your own apt client. Now it also comes with full support for debconf, which means that you no longer need to use Synaptic to manage packages that come with debconf enabled (eg Microsoft fonts, or wine).

It is also more comfortable than before. It runs as root so you no longer have to type the password every time you click "Install", plus "Search as you type" is now configurable and can be disabled.

These are some of the most relevant changes that come with Linux Mint 14, which you can see in this link.

One question… If I have LM13, can I upgrade to LM14 or do I have to wait for the final version and do a clean installation?

    1.    elav said

In theory no .. but in these cases, it is always advisable to wait for the stable version and see if the known problems do not indicate anything about it.

    2.    DanielC said

In Mint it is a reverend headache and put the knife between your teeth if you want to upgrade the version. But of power, you can.

It is easier, to do a clean installation, the same people of mint say it.

Super excellent post my good friend; just one observation: you had to talk about what the new Nemo file manager is, which in my opinion is one of the most notable and outstanding novelties of the new Linux Mint Nadia as well as you had to talk about Cinnamon, which although it is Cinnamon 1.6 it is true that it is modified in its own way for this release and its default theme has been corrected

      Thanks Sergio ^^

You're welcome my friend; If you can update the post with that information that I mentioned it will be much better; by the way I must add that I love Nemo 🙂

Another news but regarding MATE, it is proposed to replace Pluma with a Geany Lite

I see that you use Sabayon and I really liked this distro but I got messy when installing it because of the partitions issue (I'm used to the "/"; "/ home" and "swap" and this makes I create an LVM and that's zero) and on the other hand that it is the only distro that did not recognize the Bluetooth and with the wifi it was intermittent not fixed, it connected and disconnected every minute.

Apologies to the Administrator if this does not go here but I saw the opportunity to ask. You can delete if you alter the established order.

If the mint APT no longer asks for a password because it runs as root, wouldn't this be a security flaw?

I say because at least I would not like someone to install programs without my authorization, I do not know others

    1.    Paul said

mmmmm I do not think it is an error, at least in the first installation, once installed you create a new user with other privileges and voila, something similar to what happens with GUINDOUS 🙂

    2.    elav said

Exactly, that's what I thought ... I don't know if they have created any mechanism to counteract this.

      1.    Anonymous said

I understood that it no longer asks for the password before clicking install each program individually because it asks for it only once at the beginning just like synaptic does.

        1.    Sergio Esau Arámbula Duran said

In fact; He asks me before entering 🙂

    3.    Rayonant said

As Sergio mentions, it means that it only asks for the password when starting the program and not every time you install an application.

Much linux but ... did you try win 8? it's very fast, what's wrong with linux that keeps messing around with desktops? Also, multimedia applications are still missing mmmmmmmm I prefer to continue with the poop of this windows that gives me everything 🙂

    1.    elav said

I have not tried Windows 8, but a friend of mine who is FAN to Windows has tried it. Do you know what his verdict was? It stays in Windows 7. By the way, I would like to know what you mean by missing multimedia applications ..

      1.    mfcollf77 said

I tried windows 8 since they even sent me an offer of US $ 14.99 because they had an offer that whoever bought a computer with a windows 7 license would register and when they officially launched windows 8 they would have a discount and taking advantage of the fact that someone in my family bought one laptop told me to sign up.

Well win 8 seemed to me something similar to the GNOME desktop with some differences. I uninstalled it when it turned off, sometimes it would turn off on others, it stayed as suspended and it gave me a problem when I entered Fedora 17, I couldn't see the partition I have for my personal documents. since I don't use the home partition. and then I realized that when someone used windows 8 and gave him shutdown and the CPU would go off without problem if he could access the partition from fedora, otherwise I was wrong, it was as NTFS

I reinstalled windows 7 since my house did not like windows 8.

Right now I have windows 7 with Linux Mint 14 on my computer. last week I had a fedora 17 and I quite like it with a Gnome desktop but something like cinnamon and I don't even remember how it was activated like that. I mean in gnome I don't like the icons but I prefer the list in the menu. and it is what I like about the MATE and cinnamon desktop.

But I agree with the people who say that windows 7 is better. I would dare say that windows 8 will fail like windows vista.

I clarify that I do not have much computer knowledge but I am aiming for Windows 7 and for the Linux side for now it would be Fedora. followed by Linux Mint and I have to analyze the others like ubuntu, and others that I have seen in these blogs or post.

In ubuntu I don't like the reddish color.

Ah Thanks Elav for your post that are very helpful

The same has happened to me with these poops ... I tried the W $ 8 for a whole week from the day of its official departure with all its "toy store" and the truth is more oriented to the cloud and touch screens than to the ordinary user that we are the Most, I stay (for work reasons) with W $ 7 but on my netbook I have KDE and it flows better than with W $ 7 Starter that I brought, now on my other machine I make room for a dual boot with LM-Nadia Cinnamon to see if I forget about the previous negative experience of that desk.
But I already have in my mind that as far as possible, only Linux on my machines!

In the same way, the arrival of an update or new distro no longer gives me emotion. It may be, now I am totally stable with Arch for almost 1 year.

Long live pacman -Syu ya yaourt -Syu

Mint stagnated ugly, for a long time it was time for them to step aside to continue depending on the outputs of the ubuntu distros and follow their own path, but the time they can invest in that they prefer to spend adapting their distro to different desktops instead of "specializing" in one or two, leaving the rest to download from repositories.

      1.    Blaire pascal said

        Well said.

      2.    Anonymous said

I will be crazy to some, but I see it well that they save the work by relying on Ubuntu instead of Debian. And the stagnant thing doesn't really add up to me, because rather now is when they have more work and personality than before due to Cinnamon with Nemo and Mate.

What I do see is that some people just have less craving for it because after a few years they are more advanced and finally use distros with other approaches, but for new people, novice and with other needs things are going well, which is precisely to whom Mint is addressed and it is on the basis of that margin that they should be judged.

What is a Microsoft Fan Boy doing on a blog like this ??? getting out of that, excellent post, although I don't like the derivatives of Debian, NOR DEBIAN, it seems that Linux Mint is being an excellent alternative. I like how it looks. By the way, the distro I use is not shown, which is Fedora 17. Anyone have any idea what's wrong? I have already tried configuring the Firefox user agent as it says here, but it doesn't work for me.

Well, I still use lm9 lts and I don't know whether to upgrade to cinnamon or to mate on another linux mint lts. I have tried kde but it still doesn't catch me, gnome3 doesn't like it and xfce doesn't catch me either. I also don't know whether to wait for mint 15 in May 2013 after lm9 support ends.
Meanwhile I have been testing some other distros like mageia pingu and opensuse.

  11.   rots87 said

And what kind of desktop are you looking for, I prefer kde a thousand times for everything from robustness to customization.

Cinnamon is very good I like his aesthetics
GNOME 3.x ... better not say anything
XFACE from my point of view is the same GNOME 2 or at least almost
    LXDE is more or less

and in distros if you go because of the one that best occupies it is OpenSUSE the others do not hehehe

I remember this is under my personal taste

    1.    diego said

Well gnome3 does not seem as bad as some people paint it is more every day it improves especially with the extensions of all kinds that are being added, and it is my personal opinion that in the near future it will give three laps to cinnamon and it will be at the height of KDE.

      I don't use gnome, I prefer arch + openbox

      1.    elav said

That of being at the height of KDE ... well, I don't see it, but of course, that's my opinion .. 🙂

        1.    Martial del Valle said

Right now they are not compared because KDE is far superior in many aspects, but in the future it would be very good if Linux users had two excellent desktops to choose from.

          1.    Anonymous said

It will be more than two.

  12.   Fernando Monroy said

    testing.

  13.   Germ said

Well I think that if there should be a single or two desktops for all the distro there, the robustness of each one will depend on which one they have developed better.
And good for those who start in this environment these distros are good as mint.
    They are excellent.

I have installed Linux Mint 14 Nadia for more than a month and I have not been able to access the internet. I have tried by many means and even trying to communicate
With friend Llefebvre, a certain Sanchez came out and gave me to understand that Linux mint
it didn't work .. !! I almost lost the desire to continue with Linux, but I am not giving up.
My question: I can about the Linux Mint system that is on my PC and is occupying
a space of 18.5 GB, I repeat; I can delete it, reform it or put it on the other distro of
Linux without having a problem on my PC. Thank you, I am waiting for an answer in my email.

  16.   Carlos said

you can do it without problems, with not being able to access the internet if you mean browsing I would not know how to tell you, if it is updating tell you that there will be no more updates since there is no more support, better install lm13 or 17, since it has support until 2017 2019 respectively.
