Linux Mint 19.3 arrives with various updates and some news

Linux Mint 19.3

The most popular Ubuntu-based Linux distribution development team, Linux Mint has announced the release of the new version of "Linux Mint 19.3" which is based on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS (so it supports long-term support).

The new Linux Mint it is available with the Cinnamon, Xfce and MATE desktops. Linux kernel version 5.0 is available and Cinnamon has jumped to version 4.4, although a handful of new features are added this time the focus has been on bug fixes.

Linux Mint 19.3 contains only moderate changes. There's a new download screen and a new logo, among other things. There have also been changes on the application side.

What's new in Linux Mint 19.3?

As mentioned in this edition of Linux Mint 19.3 continues with Ubuntu 18.04 LTS base, along with Kernel 5.0It also integrates the updates of desktop environments XFCE 4.14, Mate 1.2 and Cinnamon 4.4.

Together with which XAppStatus applet and XApp.StatusIcon API are proposed, which implement an alternative mechanism for placing icons with application indicators in the system tray.

XApp.StatusIcon solves the problems that arise when using Gtk.StatusIcon, designed to use 16 pixel icons, it has HiDPI issues and is tied to legacy technologies like Gtk.Plug and Gtk.Socket, which are not supported by GTK4 and Wayland.

Gtk.StatusIcon also involves application-side rendering, not in the applet. To solve these problems, Ubuntu proposed the AppIndicator system, but it does not support all the functionality of Gtk.StatusIcon and as a rule requires applet processing.

XApp.StatusIcon, like AppIndicator, displays the icon representation, the tooltip and label on the side of the applet, and uses DBus to transfer information through applets.

The rendering on the side of the applet provides high-quality icons of any size and solves display problems. It supports the transfer of click events from the applet to the application, which is also done via the DBus bus.

For compatibility with other desktops, an App.StatusIcon appendix has been prepared, which determines the presence of an applet and, if necessary, returns to Gtk.StatusIcon, which allows you to display icons from old Gtk.StatusIcon-based applications.

We can also find the continuous improvement of applications developed as part of the X-Apps initiative aimed at unifying the software environment in Linux Mint editions based on different desktops.

X-Apps use modern technologies (GTK3 to support HiDPI, gsettings, etc.), but retain traditional interface elements such as a toolbar and menu. Among these applications are: Xed text editor, Pix photo manager, Xreader document viewer, Xviewer image viewer.

In the photo manager, you can select the quality mode to display photos in slideshow mode.

The Xed text editor (a branch of Pluma / Gedit) added support for opening links by right clicking.

In the Xreader document viewer (a branch of Atril / Evince), buttons have been added to view annotations on the panel.

Xviewer adds the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + 0 to reset the scale.

Instead of the graphical editor GIMP, the basic delivery has been complemented with a very simple application "Drawing".

Xplayer and VLC media players have been replaced by Celluloid (formerly GNOME MPV), which is known to be the de facto front-end in GTK +.

The new version of the Bluetooth connection assistant, Blueberry, is to detect devices faster and report errors more effectively.
