Linux Mint Debian Edition 5 “Elsie” has already been released and these are its news

Two years after the last release the launch of the new alternative version of the Linux Mint distribution, «Linux Mint Debian Edition 5» based on the base of the Debian package (the classic Linux Mint is based on the base of the Ubuntu package).

In addition to using the base Debian package, an important difference between LMDE and Linux Mint is the constant update cycle of the package base (rolling update model: partial rolling release, semi-rolling release), in which package updates are released constantly and the user has the opportunity to switch to the latest software versions at any time.

For those who do not know about LMDE, they should know whate this Linux distribution is aimed at more technically competent users and provides newer versions of packages. The goal of LMDE development is to verify that Linux Mint can continue to exist in the same way, even if Ubuntu stops development.

Furthermore, LMDE helps to verify the applications developed by the project for your full work on non-Ubuntu systems.

What's new in LMDE 5?

In this new version that was released from the LMDE 5 “Elsie” distribution most of the improvements of the classic version of Linux Mint 20.3 are included, including the original developments of the project (update manager, configurators, menus, interface, system GUI applications).

Among the changes that stand out in this new version we can find that the base of the system is based on Debian 11.2 "Bullseye", while for the part of the heart of the system there is Linux Kernel 5.10, version with which support for more modern hardware devices and above all various new features is added.

In addition to this, LMDE 5 "Elsie" is positioned as one of the few Linux distributions that still supports the 32-bit architecture, making it an ideal modern distribution for people who still have computers with this architecture.

On the part of the desktop environment that we can find in LMDE 5 as Cinnamon is always and this is offered in its version of «Cinnamon 5.2″ which comes with many great improvements and some new features, but it's also worth noting that Cinnamon version 5.2.7 is also included by default.

Also, as we mentioned at the beginning, this new version contains Linux Mint 20.3 packages and applications. The distribution is fully compatible with Debian GNU/Linux 11, but it is not package-level compatible with Ubuntu and classic Linux Mint versions.

Finally, if you are interested in knowing more about this new version, you can consult the details In the following link.

Great, it comes as a glove for those of us who use Mint 19.3 "Tricia" which is the last version of Mint that supports 32 Bits, and whose support now ended in April 2023... it will be time to update to Linux Mint Debian Edition 5!
