Free Software – Message from President Geoff Knauth: Free software is powerful because of you!
At the end of December (30), once again the FSF (Free Software Foundation) under the leadership of its current president (Geoffrey S. Knauth), gives us his farewell message for the end of the year. And in it he exhorts us and reminds us that the main mission or objective of the FSF is to protect software users everywhere. Therefore, the FSF exists to protect the rights and freedoms of all against any force in this world that would slowly undermine them or simply take them away from us completely. And in pursuit of that goal, among many activities, we are currently working hard to assess current trends in machine learning (and artificial intelligence), always with an eye toward ensuring that our individual rights are protected and that we remain in control. Also, on the legal issues related to these technologies, since these new developments could become threats to anyone's freedom. The FSF works to identify these threats to our rights and protect our freedoms.
The free software world is decentralized by design. It's not about egos, domination, market capture, or subtraction and division. It's about addition and multiplication, giving back what you get, and doing right by the people over and over again, so that they are forever empowered to have computing freedom, to learn from the good and the best, and to share creations for the benefit of others. That's what makes free software powerful. You are you. You are powerful. You have these rights. Read more on the FSF Blog
Open Source – Open Source AI and Policies from an East Asian Perspective
The OSI, as usual during this year 2024, is very immersed in everything related to the Open source Artificial Intelligence, and for this reason at the end of December 2024 it has participated and informs us about its participation and collaboration in East Asia. A place where there are many grassroots movements that are taking the initiative in overcoming linguistic and cultural gaps, promoting Open Source AI as a driver of equity and innovation. Being one of them, la COSCUP (Conference for Open Source Developers, Users and Promoters), which was one of the leading Open Source meetups in the region, where conversations focused on the democratization of AI and exploring how public sectors and businesses adopt Open Source technologies.
COSCUP is an annual conference organized by participants in the Taiwanese open source community since 2006. It is a major force in advocating for the free software movement in Taiwan. The event usually features talks, sponsor and community booths, and Birds of a Feather. In addition to international speakers, many local Taiwanese open source contributors often give their talks here. The main organizer, staff, and speakers are all volunteers. Read more on the OSI Blog
GNU/Linux: Nobara 41 Released
These first days of January, we have learned of the launch of the new update of the free and open operating system project nobara, under the number of version 41, according official announcement from its developers. And among its most notable new features (changes, corrections, improvements and additions) of this launch are the following:
- Updating the Nobara base to Fedora 41.
- The Calamares installer is based on the KaOS Linux fork to offer more feature options, such as some related to on-screen keyboard functionality. For example, it now offers a button for using the on-screen keyboard, which also appears inside the installer instead of taking up half the screen. It also now does not include network checking, so it can now be installed completely offline from any downloaded ISO.
- And among many more, Nobara 41 now supports one-click installation of RPM packages. As a result, if a Fedora-compatible RPM package is downloaded, double-clicking on it will take the user to a very simple graphical user interface to install or update the package, much like the GDebi app for Debian (.deb) packages.
Nobara Project is an operating system that offers a modified version of Fedora Linux with easy-to-use fixes already added. Furthermore, this project aims to solve most of the initial usability problems, while offering a better gaming, streaming and content creation experience from the start. More importantly, they aim to make Fedora a more user-friendly operating system that only requires pointing and clicking the mouse. Thus avoiding and reducing the basic user having to open the terminal for a good number of essential actions. About Nobara Project
