List the new version of Zabbix 5.0, an open source monitoring system

Recently the release of the new version of the open source monitoring system «Zabbix 5.0 was announced LTS »which lbequeathed with a host of innovations, of which significant improvements in monitoring security stand out, support for single sign-on, support for compression of historical data using TimescaleDB, integration with message delivery systems and support services, and much more.

For those who are unaware of this monitoring system, they should know that Zabbix consists of three basic components- A server to coordinate, generate test requests and collect statistics, agents to perform checks on the external hosts side, interface to organize system management.

The application code is under the GPLv2 license. To ease the load on the central server and form a distributed monitoring network, a number of proxy servers can be deployed that aggregate data on host group verification.

Data can be stored in MySQL, PostgreSQL, TimescaleDB, DB2 and Oracle. Without agents, the Zabbix server can receive data using protocols such as SNMP, IPMI, JMX, SSH / Telnet, ODBC and test the availability of web applications and virtualization systems.

What's new in Zabbix 5.0?

In this new version new monitoring solutions are highlighted for monitoring Redis, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Nginx, ClickHouse, Windows, Memcached, HAProxy, as well as SAML authorization support For single sign-on (SSO) solutions, the security improvements and official support for the new modular agent for Linux and Windows platforms.

In Zabbix 5.0 we can also find a new separate console utility to test JavaScript scripts, useful for webhooks and recheck preprocessing for automatic detection of performance metrics in Windows, IPMI sensors, JMX metrics

As well as a friendlier interface with convenient menu navigation on the left, which can be minimized or completely hidden to save screen space.

In addition, the ability to reliably store collected data is highlighted by the agent on the local file system, the ability to mask secret values (passwords, access codes, etc.) of user macros in the Zabbix interface and when sending notifications.

For the part from the new support we can find the webhook through HTTP proxy, the trigger support for comparison operations for text data, for custom macros for host prototypes, Float64 data type support, support for encrypted connections to MySQL and PostgreSQL databases, UI performance optimization for millions of monitoring devices, bulk edit custom macros and tag filter support for some dashboard widgets.

It also highlights the ability to prohibit the execution of certain controls by the agent, support for white and black lists, ability to create a list of encryption protocols used for TLS connections and to switch to SHA256 to store user password hashes.

Of the other changes that stand out of this new version:

  • Historical data compression when using TimescaleDB
  • Support for user modules to extend the functionality of the user interface
  • New preprocessing operators to replace text and get the name of JSON properties when working with JSONPath
  • Group messages in an email client by event
  • Ability to use secret macros in username and password to access IPMI
  • Setting all ODBC monitoring parameters at the individual metric level
  • Ability to check template metrics and devices directly from the interface Ability to copy a chart from a widget as a PNG image
  • Simple configuration and simplification of SNMP templates by moving SNMP parameters to the host interface level
  • Ability to clear SNMPv3 status cache
  • Increased the size of the metric key to 2048 characters, the size of the message when confirming a problem to 4096 characters

Great! Too bad lxc still can't be monitored from the host and you have to install it in each container.
