Live builds on Gentoo have resumed and will be weekly

gentoo-linux

A few days ago the developers of the Gentoo project released through an advertisement resumption of the formation of Live builds, which allow users not only to assess the status of the project and demonstrate the capabilities of the distribution kit without having to install it to disk, but also to use the environment as a portable workstation or system administrator tool.

The Live Compilations will be updated weekly to provide access to the latest versions of applications.

After a long break, we now have a weekly LiveGUI ISO image for amd64 available again! The 4,7 GB download, suitable for burning DVDs or a USB stick, boots right into KDE Plasma and comes with a ton of updated software. This ranges from office applications like LibreOffice, Inkscape, and Gimp to many system administration tools.

The user environment is based on the KDE Plasma desktop and includes a large selection of applications and tools for administrators and system specialists. For example, the composition includes:

  • Office applications: LibreOffice, LyX, TeXstudio, XournalPP, kile
  • Browsers: Firefox, Chrome
  • Chats: irssi, weechat
  • Text editors: Emacs, vim, kate, nano, joe
  • Developer packages: git, subversion, gcc, Python, Perl
  • Graphics: Inkscape, Gimp, Povray, Luminance, HDR, Digikam
  • Video editing: KDEnlive
  • Disk support: hddtemp, testdisk, hdparm, nvme-cli, gparted, partimage, btrfs-progs,
  • ddrescue, dosfstools, e2fsprogs, zfs
  • Selection options: nmap, tcpdump, traceroute, minicom, pptpclient, bind-tools, cifs-utils, nfs-utils, ftp, chrony, ntp, openssh, rdesktop, openfortivpn, openvpn, tor
  • Backup: mt-st, fsarchiver
  • Performance measurement packages: bonnie, bonnie++, dbench, iozone, stress, tiobench.

To give the environment a recognizable look, a competition was launched among users to develop a visual style, themes, boot animations, and wallpapers.

The design must identify the Gentoo project and may include the distribution's logo or existing design elements. The work must provide a consistent design, be licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0, be suitable for use on various screen resolutions, and be adapted for delivery as a live image.

The artwork contest
What are we looking for? Gentoo-themed artwork and branding to make Gentoo LiveGUI the best Linux live environment ever.

Incorporates the Gentoo logo and perhaps other Gentoo design elements (such as Larry the Cow) Works for a wide range of screen resolutions, etc. Is packaged more or less out-of-the-box for our LiveGUI image Provides a consistent user experience, is that is, if it consists of different parts, they fit together. It can be distributed in its entirety under the CC BY-SA 4.0 license We could, for example, imagine wallpapers, Plasma themes, maybe even a start menu animation GRUB or a LibreOffice splash screen… Feel free to come up with more ideas.
If you base your work on freely available source material created by others, keep track of the sources and their licenses in an attached readme file.

What are we not looking for? Please do not submit anything that infringes the copyrights or trademarks of third parties. While a Star Trek-themed Gentoo desktop would be great, Paramount might object and we wouldn't be able to distribute it. Same for My Little Pony or the Simpsons. Please do not submit artwork that falls into the NSFW category. We'll know it when we see it and we won't be able to distribute it. Please do not submit artwork with political or religious statements. No matter how universally acceptable you think they are, someone will be offended by them. The design should be such that children or colleagues can walk into your office and you don't have to cover it up quickly. 🙂 Also, think of your contribution in terms of the Gentoo Code of Conduct.

Finally, it should be mentioned that the compilations offered is are available for architecture amd64, they are 4,7 GB in size and are suitable for installation on DVD and USB drives.
