In our previous and first post on the subject that this of IT trend in the network, that is, on the "Metaverse" we delve into knowing the following: What is or will be?What technologies led to its creation? What commercial organizations are entering fully into the development of the Metaverse? And their characteristics among other things.
While, in this one we will delve a little more about the «Quality of Openness» that should or should exist in the Metaverse, or in other words about the "Open Metaverse".
And as usual, before we dive into today's topic of the "Open Metaverse", we will leave for those interested in exploring our previous related post with the Metaverse, the following links to it. So that you can easily explore them, if necessary, after reading this publication:
"Because, the "Metaverse" It is a technology in full development, which is just beginning to be implemented by some organizations, there is no common, global or universal definition of it. But in the meantime, one could define "Metaverse" as a digital universe full of many online worlds, which will be ideal for working, studying, having fun, playing, doing business and interacting with others, through 3D avatars using virtual reality and augmented reality.
A space where intensive use will be made of blockchain technology, cryptocurrencies and Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs), so that they allow individual ownership and the creation of economies, markets and online businesses, in a faster, more secure way, and even privately and anonymously, if necessary. Open Metaverse: Initiatives and organizations involved
What would the Open Metaverse be?
El "Open Metaverse" same as him "Metaverse" currently conceived, are in a incipient stage of conception, development and implementation. It may be that there ends up being one as open as possible or the 2 in parallel each with a degree of open / free different, just as today, the ecosystems of proprietary and closed software with those of free and open software.
However, the "Open Metaverse" as follows:
"An Open Metaverse is one that, to the greatest degree possible, guarantees or will guarantee the use of free and open technologies, both in hardware and software. And that it applies or will apply the philosophical principles of the same in its processes and work mechanisms. In order to thus offer the largest possible number of citizens of the world, the greatest amount of accessibility, decentralization, freedom, independence, privacy, anonymity and computer security possible.. "
What initiatives are known and what organizations are involved?
Perhaps, the concept might sound a bit utopian, but later we will see some initiatives advanced to guarantee a "Open Metaverse", by certain organizations that are not very far from this concept elaborated as a possible goal to be carried out.
It is an organization (Open Metaverse Interoperability Group - OMI) which focuses on bridging virtual worlds by designing and promoting identity protocols, social graphics, inventory, and more. Its members include companies and individuals working to achieve this common goal.
Additionally, it aims to create a community of artists, creators, developers, and other innovators to discuss and explore concepts surrounding the design and development of virtual worlds. Its core values include the following: Collaborate, driven by research, privacy, and accessibility, to make the Metaverse more human. See GitHub.
It is an open consortium (KhronosGroup), nonprofit and powered by members of more than 150 industry-leading companies that produce advanced, royalty-free interoperability standards for 3D graphics, augmented and virtual reality, parallel programming, vision acceleration, and machine learning.
Khronos standards include Vulkan®, Vulkan® SC, OpenGL®, OpenGL® ES, OpenGL® SC, WebGL ™, SPIR-V ™, OpenCL ™, SYCL ™, OpenVX ™, NNEF ™, OpenXR ™, 3D Commerce ™, ANARI ™ and glTF ™. Currently they offer the Community, the software OpenXR which is an open and royalty-free standard for accessing virtual reality and augmented reality platforms and devices.
This project (OpenHMD.net) aims to provide a free and open source API and drivers for immersive technology, such as head-mounted displays with integrated head tracking. In such a way, to achieve to implement the support for as many devices as possible in a portable multiplatform package.
Currently, OpenHMD supports a wide range of devices such as Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, Sony PSVR, Deepoon E2, and others. It also supports a generic Android controller and an external sensor data controller to allow the use of its own sensor called "Fusion" and its functions. Watch GitHub.
This project (Open Metaverse OS) comes from Outlier Ventures (Polygon Base Camp Accelerator) and basically consists of providing a common and open source Operating System for the Metaverse. Or in other words, they seek to develop a kind of open and shared Operating System based on the success of decentralized protocols, in particular DeFi and NFT (Non Fungible Tokens) that emerge from what they call the Web 3.0 stack.
For them, a true Metaverse needs its own economy and native currencies, where they can be earned, spent, loaned, borrowed, or invested interchangeably in a physical or virtual sense and, most importantly, without the need for a government. And that it is so inclusive and easy to use that it allows to include as many people as possible from the old economy. Watch Open Metaverse OS PDF V6.
In summary, the "Open Metaverse" maybe not something different or alternative to the only one "Metaverse" that should be created. Since, to this day, it is glimpsed that it is new "Internet of the future" offer the highest level of interoperability and standardization possible. As has been announced so far by some involved. Since this objective is reached better and faster with open / free technologies and processes. And as we have seen there are already many Nonprofit organizations involved in ensuring as much as possible, a "Open Metaverse".
