Microsoft joins the Linux Foundation as a Platinum member

Many have viewed with great distrust the repeated attempts by Microsoft to approach Free Software, going through its own distribution based on the linux kernel, migration of applications to make it compatible and the last known: The incorporation of Microsoft as a Platinum user of the Linux Foundation.

Well yes, as we just said, a few hours ago Microsoft was announced as the new Platinum member of the Linux Foundation, so Bill Gate's company you will have to fork out about $ 500000 annually. The announcement was made on the occasion of the Connect () 2016 developer event and was also accompanied by the release of the SQL SERVER beta for Linux. microsoft-linux-100617799-primary.idge

Microsoft and the Linux Foundation

The Linux Foundation has played a very important role in the development of free software and is the main person in charge of maintaining and updating the Linux kernel, for several years it has received numerous amounts of donations and made a large number of alliances to sponsor the development quickly, transparently and without defining external policies.

For its part, Microsoft is the monster at the operating system level and at the time it was one of the main detractors of free technology, for some time now, the Microsoft board has been interested mainly in Linux. We believe that this approach from Microsoft is given with the purpose of being able to benefit from the technological advances that today are created for the benefit of communities.

The relationships between the Linux Foundation and Microsoft are not new, since in the past the Foundation had anticipated that Microsoft fulfilled all the characteristics to be a member of this, ensuring that its contribution in the mobile area and at cloud level it would be exceptional.

The structure of the Linux Foundation with the addition of Microsoft

The select group of Platinum Members of the Linux Foundation now numbers 11, made up of: Cisco, HuaweiFujitsu Ltd., Hewlett-Packard Development Co. L.P., Intel Corp., IBM Corp., NEC Corp, Oracle Corp., Qualcomm Innovation Center Inc.Samsung Electronics Co.Ltd and newcomer Microsoft Corp..

The person in charge by Microsoft to form the board of directors will be John gossman, architect of the Azure development team.

What is this all about?

It is a rather difficult question to answer, everything indicates that above the financial contribution that the Linux Foundation is going to receive for the incorporation of Microsoft, the main objective is that the latter contribute its technical capabilities and experiences in quite important areas such as the of the mobile area.

Now, it would not be unreasonable to think that the latter comes with a willingness to influence so that some things are changed in the commercial or technological innovation process that is carried out. But we must believe in the good intention over the commercial aspect of this alliance, and we hope that the words of the executive director of the Linux Foundation in the official press release are a total reality:

Microsoft has grown and matured in its use and contributions to open source technology. The company has become a keen Linux and open source supporter and a very active member of many major projects. Your membership is an important step for Microsoft, but also for the open source community, which will benefit from the company's growing contributions.

What do you think? Is the alliance between the Linux Foundation and Microsoft worth it? Are Microsoft's true intentions good? Will there be growth in open source technologies thanks to this alliance?

It seems to me that the alliance is nothing more than a Microsoft strategy to fill up more money and charge for free software that does not belong to it as it has done repeatedly with its Asure platform, its intentions are nothing more than to seize what is not yours and make money with it, also the advancement of Linux has been so much that they began to copy Linux for a reason and Windows 10 looks so much like Linux that it makes you think that Microsoft can no longer compete against Linux that every time it becomes more popular and it is well known that it is better than Windows and therefore the alliance to avoid being taken from the market and charging for what is not theirs, as the saying goes, if you cannot beat it, join

Cisco, HP, Oracle, Samsung, aren't they all there because it helps them fill up more money?

As it is MS you have to hit it.

One of the many demonstrations of immaturity in the free software community.

In that premium list I don't see the FSF, Debian or the arch community, they are all companies that put money to obviously use Linux to earn more money.

But since it is MS you have to hit it.

One of the many demonstrations of immaturity in the free software community. They really believe that the really important contributions are made by a fat guy in glasses in his garage, and kept with 3 friends.

The problem is that before the Linux Foundation they already have their piece of paper that accredits them as a member (and platinum to finish), the comments of the community would matter little to the foundation since for them it is "important" because of the contributions that Microsoft gives them ( and I mean in every way), as the executive director of the foundation said.

What for now we must be attentive to how Microsoft's participation develops, this to evaluate if it would be necessary to migrate to other operating systems, which I would not like very much personally since I like Linux, but anyway, time will will tell.

All those companies that are premium put money for Linux to advance, and obviously, earn more money. Anyway, better, if a company with millions of dollars invests in free software and all that can be used by everyone, welcome.

But since it is MS you have to hit it.

In that list of premium members, I don't see the FSF, Debian or the Arch community.

I am like other «skeptics»: Microsoft is one of the companies that are the maximum exponents of the culture (for me: «anti») and Yankee philosophy - I consider that it makes the slightest illusions about idealistic or disinterested behavior of Microsoft (or any other representative of this culture of truinfo and profit) is absolutely absurd and devoid of the slightest rational basis. Hopefully I'm wrong but I think that what the free software universe would have to do is avoid the slightest contact or agreement with Microsoft and other exponents of The "Yankee" philozofia. A few years ago Gates (or Microsoft) donated millions of dollars to Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania for the development of AIDS medicine etc. But in the media there was never talk that he has done so on the condition of letting Monsanto go free in those countries and not to mention that a few months before (Gates) has become one of the largest Monsanto shareholders ...
And for the record: what can Microsoft contribute to the Linux universe and free software apart from problems and conceptual thefts ...? It is certain that they will not do anything that favors or helps Linux, unless it is something that brings benefits to Microsoft - And I'm not talking about "moral" benefits, I'm talking about dollars-each PC without Linux means a few dollars a year and there is no more. Let's not get our hopes up: it's dollars that count and Microsoft lives FOR AND FOR dollars.

If MS has a real intention of getting closer to Linux, it should start by releasing the drivers and stop putting pressure on hardware manufacturers to make their platforms accept free technology. It cannot be that this or that equipment does not work well with SL. If they do, we will begin to believe them.

    1.    Sebas said

Maybe you should start to think that all that Microsoft using thugs to pressure multinationals to bully Linux is just a story. It's hard to stop doing something you're only doing in the heads of cospiranoics and FUD creators.

On the other hand Microsoft does not own drivers to be releasing them. That is what each manufacturer does. And if Microsoft had the means to give birth to its own drivers, "the community" should also do the same instead of pretending that someone else will give them to hand.

What is the evil intention of the famous Redmont Giant ,,,
What and how do you want to destroy Linux ...
The Community will allow it ...

Community? That less than 3% of the end-user market using linux?

They forget that the Linux market (as well as all UNIX) is not the end user.

    2.    Sebas said

Linux has long since ceased to belong to "the community" and belongs to a handful of multinationals.

Simply put, MS cannot be left behind in terms of innovation and technology, what better way to acquire knowledge and not be left behind as it is doing, if not by joining precisely the largest technology collaboration in the history of mankind. It's that easy.

They couldn't from the outside and then they would try from the inside.
the truth is that the damage they can do from within is great.
this gives me a bad feeling,
What the hell does mocosoft give us? nothing at all, because the truth is I don't understand it.
It will be a matter of the GNU / HURD project being stable now!

Ufff, the thief inside the house, a company that permanently breaks the laws, at least in the EU to steal their money from consumers. What, how, don't they report it?
It is the directive 2005/29 / CE implemented in the laws of several EU countries such as Spain, Italy or France among others. It defines as aggressive and abusive commercial practice the imposition of a product that the consumer does not want when buying another. Judgments in France (Petrus - Lenovo case, RG registration No. 91-11-000118) and in Italy (Corte di Cassazione, n. 19161 of 11/09/2014) prove that software and hardware are different products according to their nature, legislation and time of acceptance of the contract. It is logical that for 42 euros they charge for the OEM license, you cannot go to trial knowing that you will have to arrive in Brussels to jump into the group of politicized judges in Spain (there have already been different judgments from Brussels against others from the Supreme Court and the Constitutional Court because they sing too much). By the way, ASUS does return the money, but there is no way of knowing if they return everything and in any case the illegal thing is that they even get to charge it, I do not want to buy it! I said, all thieves.

Microsoft is a company, like Oracle, Red Hat, SUSE, Sun, among many that I can name that work with free software. What is the difference between these and Microsoft who hate MS so much and love Red hat for example? What MS wants to make money? Isn't it the goal of every company? Look that SUSE or Sun employees when she was alive had to pay for electricity, internet, transportation, food, etc.

None of them do it for the love of art, but to make a profit. It is your business, and the work of your employees.

Or does everyone believe that MySQL is free because Sun / Oracle are generous? It never entered your head that the end user proud of using free software is the cheapest tester in the world (is it free)?

Again, and it hurts whoever hurts, those who move the threads of free software the most, and give more innovations, are companies, not communities.

Debian maintains a distribution, just like Arch, they do not develop software, but compile the work of others within their philosophy. None of those communities create or develop Apache, MySQL, the Linux kernel, Nginx, or XEN.

For me, the power of community development vs. business is demonstrated with Hurd, I may die and my grandchildren work in IT, and I doubt they can see Hurd 1.0 fully.

    1.    daniel_fingus said

But all of those put out some useful and free product for the end user to use. Microsoft takes out a payment. That does not enter your head.
