Hotot: A desktop client for Identica, Twitter and StatusNet

We have recently set up in our local network a service of microblog using StatusNet, the same platform used by Identi.ca.

Obviously, this type of service is more convenient to manage through a desktop application, so I set about finding one that would suit my needs. What requirements had to meet?

  • It had to be a simple and easy to use application.
  • Had to endure use of Proxies and customization of the server to which I should connect.

I tried with Gwibber, Pine, Turpial y Pidgin. Of all of them, the only one that did not allow me to put a custom server to connect to was Turpial. Pine turned out to be too simple, Gwibber too loaded and Pidgin I did not like to do what I needed.

So i kept hotot. This application has support for Twitter e Identi.ca by default, but other services of this type can also be customized. The interface, as you can see in the image, is quite simple and pleasant, in addition to having very nice effects when viewing the timeline, the re-tweets or the information of a user.

It has notifications integrated into the system, support for extensions (including a firewall against users) and the possibility of uploading images if the service allows it, URL shortener, language translator, Gmap, among other. It also allows us to manage multiple accounts.

To install nothing as simple as opening a terminal and putting:

$ sudo aptitude install hotot

Simple right?

      Well, it is logical if you are a KDE user, right?

    My favorite Linux client and I apologize for Satanas (who made Turpial) for fooling you this way, but just love it. Although the latest version has some problems with the API.

      What problem specifically? Every now and then he pulls me a poster with a 500 connection error. So now I am using more Turpial.

        It told me that the API had already run out and such, I think it was a 500 error but that was fixed for me when I updated it a few days ago. There is a new version.

          Hmm. I wait for it then in my Debian, although I am happy with Turpial 😀

          I don't use Hotot, but Turpial, but the version I have available is: 1: 0.9.7 + git20111028.00039ca-1
