Mr. Robot: a Geek series you don't want to miss

I start by saying that I hope not to release any Spoilers, at least not intentionally XD.

### What is Mr. Robot

A few days ago a friend recommended ** Mr. Robot **, a series launched by the ** USA Network **, and that touches on a topic already covered in other series and movies but with a differential point: ** everything is more realistic **. I intended to wait a little longer to make a personal judgment, but I couldn't hold it.

Laughing television products are still coming out for those of us who know some Computer Science and know more than one Operating System. I mean those series or movies where the ** misnamed Hackers **, access the FBI or NSA networks in 2 seconds, using dubious Operating Systems with even more dubious Software, and where the Mouse is a non-existent peripheral, They do everything with the keyboard, launching 20 random windows and always showing the ones they are interested in seeing ... Incredible !!!

### Details that make the difference

In Mr. Robot, at least in the first episode they released, this is not the case and there are details that attract a lot of attention. Our protagonist, Rami Malek, who plays the character very well (called Eliot) from my point of view, is a "Hacker" at night (something like a Vigilante) and a Security expert by day.

He does not hack for money, but because he feels that something is very wrong in this world. He has problems relating to other people except Angela, and this relationship between people through a virtual or physical way, is a subject that is seen quite a bit as criticism. But let's go to the part that we will like the most.

MrRobot10

MrRobot12

In all his computers he uses ** GNU / Linux ** with ** GNOME **, and this is mentioned in the chapter, and I'm not saying it, you can see it in the following images:

MrRobot4

MrRobot3

The servers seem to use ** Unix ** or something from the ** BSD ** family. I say this by the commands shown, which although they are not difficult to understand, we can see that they are not the ones used in Linux, although of course, they can be invented. During the dialogues, well-known and quite technical terms are sometimes used, such as: DDos attacks, Denial of Services, Rootkits, … etc.

MrRobot5

MrRobot9

MrRobot8

MrRobot7

MrRobot6

Mr. Robot

Elliot doesn't have a profile on ** Facebook ** because she doesn't like it, but she does ** Instagram **, and both uses them as a research tool. As another detail we can see that when you browse Facebook or ** GMail **, despite the fact that the interfaces are very similar to those we know, there are slight changes in the design or they omit distinctive elements such as logos and others. Of course, if we pause we can see that in GMail for example, the emails in the inbox have some relationship with the plot or the character they hacked.

MrRobot1

MrRobot11

He has a cell phone (clearly with Android) and he is not the typical series Hackers who access the accounts of others by magic, in several moments of the first chapter we will see how he uses ** Social Engineering **.

Beyond the technological part, there is the social point, the critical gaze. Mr Robot has a very well elaborated script, which touches on very current issues and is expressed by the protagonist on several occasions. Without wanting to advance too much, they will see your clear opinion towards Steve Jobs, Blackberry or the big technology companies. It can be seen in this chapter, for example, that senior executives do not use GNU / Linux, but hey, see for yourself.

Mr. Robot promises, and if the rest of the chapters are like this first, it will undoubtedly be one of my favorite series. I recomend it to you.

Having seen the post, I just downloaded it ... now look for subtitles in Spanish.

They say the series doesn't look bad at all.

    1.    elav said

In subtitulos.es you find it 😀

      1.    Alberto said

The subtitles are advanced 🙁 I already downloaded them separately but I don't know how to use them 😮, how clumsy, do you know how that works?

      2.    shattered said

Before you could tweak the tempo of the subtitles with subtitleeditor or with gnome-subtitle or with the native subtitle modifier for KDE that now I don't remember its name, but for a while here, it says that a codec is missing and none of these programs used to synchronize, if anyone knows of one that allows you to see the video while synchronizing, let them know.

        Goods.

      3.    charlie brown said

Use the Smplayer player that allows you to synchronize the subtitles, forward or backward without the need to edit them.

I have them in perfect sync, I'll give you the link in mega 🙂

There is an IRC channel on freenode.net #mrrobot to discuss the series, in English obviously. I invite you since today they air the second episode. And please, connect to IRC from the terminal, with green letters on a black background 😉

      1.    dbillyx said

There is a channel on the tv to be able to see it .. or wait for it to be uploaded in torrent ... since what time is the transmission to enter exactly at that time to irc ...

  2.   Percaff_TI99 said

This series is really good, as you say there is no vertigo or three-dimensional consoles - in the continuum style or the movie Swordfish - and many others, in this everything takes place almost in real time. Catch from the start. Too bad you have to wait until June 24 for the next chapter.

As for the terminal commands, I have tried some of them in the terminal without success xD, however the use of 'ps' is quite usual, the use of multiple pipes.

What I could not determine is which terminal he is using in image 5 -it is eterm- but I mean that interface-, I have already seen it in the movie 'The fifth power' about Julian Assange they use it all the time. It looks like the 'Htop' interface but without F9 = Kill, unless there is a way to embed the terminal in 'Htop'; in the fifth power I think there is also 'mc' with a terminal inside, I could not achieve it either.

I had made a small video fragment where a little more than 2 minutes where is just the conversation on the desktop -img. 3 and 4- I found that part very funny and I was going to send it to you, but I see that you are not going to put anything on video.

I am fascinated by this type of series or movies, the more realistic the better of course.
    Greetings.

Does anyone know the name of the program to burn cd / dvd that it uses ????, (it is not brazier or k3b)

    1.    Jesus said

It is just an interface created.

    2.    dbillyx said

It reads cd dvd maker and googling comes out a cd dvd maker something similar but that I imagine changes with the gnome interface and apart is a cd dvd creator something similar to the maker found in google ...

    3.    blondfu said

Well, I would bet on K3b, although slightly modified. It looks pretty much like it actually, more than any other DVD burning program that I know of at least.

A decent first chapter if they know how to take the series well will be good the only question that remains is that they cut it because it "does not meet the audience ratings" imposed by the television network, we hope they do not cancel it

    1.    dbillyx said

If they decided to upload it to pirate or kick and see the download statistics ... it would be worth more than a television audience, although without forgetting the cost or the profits that are collected more on TV than in a torrent

      1.    Jesus said

Well, according to the data, it has had a lot of downloads in torrents, so to combat piracy they have uploaded it to their own YouTube channel legally and in full HD.

        1.    Manual of the Source said

When I read your comment I went to look for it on YouTube, I was delighted to see that it was true and even more when I saw that they uploaded a version with subtitles, but then when trying to reproduce it I found this message:

The person who uploaded this video did not allow it to be available in your country.
          We are sorry.

Mñeh, good start but it is clear that they have not yet understood it.

Nothing any VPN can't fix, although I hope for the day when they understand that restrictions [geographic or virtually any other kind] only harm themselves rather than benefit them.

I also leave the links here below for those who are interested:

          With subtitles: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VkFqE2wYFfk

By the way, in the comments they say that only the first episode will be on YouTube, then only some clips and interviews will be uploaded. 🙁

I have it in the bedroom, precisely because the comments are very positive. Of course, I have also read excellent reviews of Marvel Daredevil and it is being very difficult to digest - although I already know that it is another theme. I imagine that I can combine it with Hannibal, hehe.

    1.    eliotime3000 said

I've seen the first chapters of Marvel's Dardevil on Netflix, and the truth is that it works much better than the movie, which by far gives a forced script unpleasantness.

Regarding this series, I will see it as soon as it comes out on Netflix or on a TV channel.

      1.    Wolf said

I've seen 5 or 6 chapters of the series, but I don't know, it seems to me that it languishes in many ways, that the plots are spaced with unnecessary content. I watch a series of the heap for now, with a lot of action, yes, but for me it is not enough. Of course this is a matter of taste; For example, I love Hannibal for his chapters full of dreams, delusions and an exquisite artistic taste, hehe.

  8.   dbillyx said

I just saw Mr. Robot. My opinion is ... my opinion is identical to most people who know what I mean ... automate right?

  9.   Sli said

The best in the last few minutes when you are researching, is watching 4chan. I have seen the first chapter very good series and excellent, although it is true that they could put some more technicality.

  10.   giskard said

Not bad, although it's like the Matrix without special effects and a bit of Dexter. Let's see what the 2nd chapter holds.

  11.   nosferatuxx said

    Hmm….
The series paints well ... Will they be advised by Kevin Mitnick or by Mark Zukerberg?

Some of you Do you know that there is also the CSI cyber series .. ??? it's like 3 seasons.

    1.    eliotime3000 said

In Latin America, the AXN channel is just going through the first season of SCI: Cyber, although the truth is that when they recreate PC software, they do it too fictional.

Just in the movie «The Social Network» there are also those kinds of scenes, although they have practically shown the first versions of KDE and Mozilla SeaMonkey (with the Iceweasel logo to avoid friction with the Mozilla foundation).

    2.    dbillyx said

3 seasons? So the version dubbed into Spanish apart from being season 1 is a past season?

  12.   Jesus said

Fully recommended! It is as elav says one of the series that does not exaggerate with technicalities or interfaces, I can imagine elav jumping for joy when he hears about his beloved KDE.

    1.    eliotime3000 said

Indeed, the KDE thing is an excellent allusion, although at the moment, my PC hardware is not capable of executing this interface (I will wait until it is stable enough to be able to enjoy it to the fullest extent).

      1.    Sli said

You have tried with porteus, manjaro or wifislax they have very light versions of kde that I have put them in 510mb of ram (in this case porteus)

  13.   George said

Today I start to see it thanks 😀

  14.   eliotime3000 said

Good series, although what they have seen actually is the pilot episode of the series itself, which will be released in 3 days, and by May 27, the pilot episode aired on many online VOD services (I doubt that Netflix has published this pilot episode with subtitles in Latin America).

What strikes me is the name of the episodes that have been given to this series, which refer to the most popular video formats on the Internet.

  15.   Sergio S. said

Very good the first chapter. I do not remember in which other blog I read about this series and at the touch I downloaded it. The main actor is very important, the role he does really well.
I think they combine a sufficient amount of technicalities with situations that can interest everyone who watches the series without being so techies. I imagine that there will be chapters more focused on the technical and others less. I have faith in the series because they have studied well the programs and OS that they should use to accompany the ideology of the protagonist, and it is also quite current that people concerned about their privacy and security are gradually switching to free software.
It remains to be seen if they manage to bring the series all season to the same level as the pilot.

And that reminded me of another series, which I was just watching in full last month: Halt and Catch Fire. The truth disappointed me. Avoiding spoilers, I wanted to take the opportunity to comment on how bad it ended up being. It started out relatively well, with absolutely no technicalities except for words thrown into the air, but as the chapters went by the whole plot became a Yankee novel. Instead of being a series about "the pc revolution" it ended up being about "how can I screw up my partner's life." The last 2 chapters I saw them forward to know how the season ended: VERY BAD 😛
Did anyone see it too? They don't miss out on anything.

  16.   dbillyx said

I tell those who have problems with subtitles, in kickass there is a version with integrated subtitles, so they won't bother to search or synchronize. I would put the link but I don't know if it will be allowed.

    1.    elav said

In fact, in subtitulos.es there are some that depend on the editing of the video.

      1.    dbillyx said

For that reason finding it embedded in the video would subtract the extra time when looking for them separately ... the one I found is 567 mb hdtv .avi. Decision of some of how they want to have it to save it on the hard drive.

  18.   Juan Pablo said

It is not for nothing, but "USA Network" is one of the most conservative chains in the country that persecutes Assange and Snowden, I don't think it is very transparent to say.

If I want to know what Hackers are like, I see an interview with Assange, I would never see a Yankee movie, the same one that persecutes them.

    1.    dbillyx said

I have imagined that in the course of the first season they want to gradually give a wrong idea or in their case the idea that suits them best and do something indirectly against hackers or in a way of referring to snowden ... but it is something What do I imagine ... we'll wait to see what happens ... what I'm asking is, if this was a pilot chapter, chapter 01 will have some new scenes ...

      1.    Percaff_TI99 said

From what I understand the main script had been conceived for a film, which was not made and ended up becoming this series.

The pilot chapter is this, it lasts about 1 hour and minutes without the commercials, when they should generally last something like 43 minutes. There are 9 more chapters -as I have read on the wiki-

        Hello friend (pilot)
        ones and zeros
        Debug
        daemons
        exploits
        brave traveler
        View source
        Mirroring
        white rose
        Zero day

  19.   dbillyx said

I will take another look at the series already calmer without the emotion from the beginning, and I may write something on my blog, although I am not that good critic but something will come out ... I wonder if this is some special script or will they be based in something ... obviously making changes ....
