MX Linux: Latest news for the month of February 2020

Taking advantage of, among other novelties, the already known and used MX Linux Distro, like the launch a few days ago of its version 19.1, and its variant "AHS", we will comment on others that have happened during the month of February 2020.

MX Linux, for those less knowledgeable about it, is a GNU / Linux Distro developed from cooperative development between existing communities of the Distros "antiX" and the former "MEPIS". Resulting in, a Modern, light, powerful and friendly distro.

MX Linux: 19.1 AHS

The last times on the blog, where we talked about the current version (19 - Ugly Duckling), it was when I was in beta phase and when it was officially released as stable version. For this reason, we recommend that those interested read these previous publications to deepen a little more about it.

However, it is worth noting from the current version (19 - Ugly Duckling) following:

"MX Linux stands out among many, because these Communities have contributed their best tools and talents to create un GNU / Linux distribution light but robust, designed under the concept of offering a elegant and efficient desktop with a simple configuration, high stability and solid performance. And all of this in an ISO image size small enough for easy download, use, and deployment.". Previous Post: MX Linux 19: The new version based on DEBIAN 10 has been released

MX Linux: What's New in Version 19.1

Latest news February-2020 for MX Linux 19 - Ugly Duckling

VirtualBox updated to version 6.1.2 - 5 / Feb

This update was added because, and in quoting the words of its official Package Repository Manager:

"… There have been a number of bug fixes and improvements since the current version, and the current version will not build its modules on the new version 5.4+ kernels so this update is necessary".

Making the usual recommendation or "good practice" when carrying out the same, all Virtual Machines (VM) "saved" or "paused" of Virtualbox must remain off before applying the update, or otherwise there is a risk that They may not work after the update.

Changes in the official repositories - 10 / Feb

This update was implemented under the argument of:

"The reason is to allow maximum flexibility for both antiX and MX to develop special versions of the packages without stepping on each other. The relationship between antiX and MX has not changed in any way".

Specifically, the change refers to the fact that Antix repositories configured in the file "/Etc/apt/sources.list.d/antix.list" they will be disabled (removed) by default. Clarifying that in no case will this represent the elimination of any package, since all existing ones will be migrated or integrated into the MX-Linux repository (/etc/apt/sources.list.d/mx.list).

Fluxbox Integrated Configuration Update - Feb 15

Changes or improvements made to the so-called configuration MX Fluxbox 2.0 include those mentioned below, among many others:

  • Full integration with the Underlying System, allowing a single click to access the MX Tools section and obtain a complete menu of Xfce4.
  • Expansion of graphical hardware support, due to the scarce resources required.
  • Creation of Dock and launchers powered by wmalauncher.
  • Support for GTK 2 themes (lxappearance).

Emphasizing that said update, MX Fluxbox 2.0, is already included integrated in the ISO de MX-19.1.

AHS repositories

Launch of the new version MX Linux 19.1 - 15 / Feb

This update can be implemented by means of a simple normal update through the console via commands or through the graphical tool for updating packages. MX Linux.

In the words of its creators, it is:

"… An update to our MX-19 version, consisting of bug fixes and application updates since our original MX-19 release. If you are already running MX-19, there is no need to reinstall. Packages are all available through the regular update channel".

Among the most important of this update, it stands out that now there is a new branch called AHS which comes from the abbreviation of the phrase in English "Advanced Hardware Support" which translates into Spanish, like «Advanced Hardware Support». The same, is only for 64 bits, and among other things includes the possibility of updating to a Debian 5.4 kernel, Table 19.2 Graphics Library, as well as the newest for him Server X.

This update reconfigures the native repository of MX-Linux (/etc/apt/sources.list.d/mx.list) As follows:

# MX Community Main and Test Repos
deb http://mirror.cedia.org.ec/mx-workspace/mx/repo/ buster main non-free
#deb http://mirror.cedia.org.ec/mx-workspace/mx/testrepo/ buster test

#ahs hardware stack repo
# deb http://mirror.cedia.org.ec/mx-workspace/mx/repo/ buster ahs

Leaving the discretion of the user, enable the AHS repository and implement the updates, via terminal or graphically. For the day, from the publication of this post, it allows me to install and update the following packages, on my own MX Linux 19 used:
