MX Mate: Little Linux Experiment - Running Mate on MX Linux

Many Linux users regularly test different GNU / Linux Distros. Others like me, we usually on the same GNU / Linux Distro try different Desktop Environments (DEs), Window Managers (WMs) and Applications (Apps). In my particular case, for more than 2 years I have been using my own Respin (Live and Installable Snapshot) custom named Miracles GNU / Linux which is based on MX Linux.

And since, MX Linux was born with XFCE Desktop Environment, and then incorporated Plasma and FluxBox, I have given myself the task little by little to try and incorporate other DEs and WMs has said reskin, little by little to feel first-hand the user experience of each one of them. And so today, I will show a little "MX Matte", in other words, MX Linux + Mate DE.

And for those who want to know a little more about the Distro MX Linux and the Respin MilagrOS GNU / LinuxWe will also leave the links to our previous publications on them below for further exploration.

"MX is una Distro GNU / Linux made cooperatively between the antiX and MX Linux communities. And it is part of a family of Operating Systems that are designed to combine elegant and efficient desktops with high stability and robust performance. Its graphical tools provide an easy way to accomplish a wide variety of tasks, while Live USB and snapshot tools legacy from antiX add impressive portability and excellent remastering capabilities. "MilagrOS GNU / Linux, is an unofficial edition (Respin) of the MX-Linux Distro. Which comes with extreme customization and optimization, which makes it ideal for 64-bit computers, both low-resource or old as well as modern and high-end, and also for users with no or limited Internet potential and knowledge of GNU / Linux. Once obtained (downloaded) and installed, it can be used effectively and efficiently without the need for the Internet, since everything you need and more is pre-installed." Why make MX Mate?

As I said before, I regularly try different Desktop Environments (DEs), Window Managers (WMs) and Applications (Apps), which then I add if necessary to my Respin MilagrOS GNU / Linux. Reason why, currently said live Respin (live) comes by default, with the Desktop Environments XFCE, LXQT and Plasma, plus Window Managers I3WM, IceWM, FluxBox and OpenBox.

And this time, I have decided to choose and try the Matte Desktop Environment, due to among other positive technical things already known, to which it has been very well commented today, by our Readers on our following entry:

"It is the piece of the puzzle that controls the placement and appearance of the windows. And that it requires X Windows to work but not a Desktop Environment, obligatorily." Window Managers: Graphical User Interfaces for GNU / Linux

My Opinion on Mate DE

Now that i have installed, configured, optimized and customized these are my opinions of Mate about MX Linux:

  1. It runs very smooth and does not consume as much RAM or CPU at startup.
  2. Applications run at excellent speed.
  3. It is very easy to customize.
  4. It runs very well, native applications from other Desktop Environments and third parties.
  5. Good own tools

Note: I just wish your Apps menu out dynamicThat is, it could perform pattern searches to more easily find and run applications through it.

I used MATE until a few months ago, and if I remember correctly, there is an alternative for the MATE menu, it is called BRISK, which allows you to search for applications. Now I use KDE NEON, it really works very well and it has KDEConnect, a tool that I use a lot and that is the reason why I stopped using MATE. But without a doubt MATE is a classic and light desk, where everything just works. 🙂
