My (other) desktop: Debian + KDE ElementaryOS style

Here I leave you how my desk is looking (on the work PC) style of Elementary OSUsing Debian Testing, KDE 4.8 y Plank. I still have a lot to do:

  • Find or adapt a monochrome icon theme for Plasma.
  • Find or adapt the same theme for the buttons in Dolphin and the rest of the applications.
  • Put the Time and Date next to each other.
  • Pray that someone makes a theme for Kwin identical to Elementary 🙂
  • Other details….

    Very good work!
Tried eOS on LiveCD, and I have written the wikipedia entry for what I liked: http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/elementary_OS
Even so I did not install it because it was beta, instead I divided the 30GB "test" partition into two 15GB, in one I installed Arch, from where I am writing now after 4 hours trying to configure the WiFi, and in the other I will install something … Who knows what, maybe Mint 14 or eOS. I have to say that I am not liking Arch at all, I think I will give Debian a try.
Now that Debian Wheezy is frozen, would you recommend installing Debian Stable and waiting for it to be moved, or installing Testing in the meantime? Thank you!
(I also had problems with the iwlwifi drivers when trying to install Debian, when they are incorporated in Arch ...)

Thanks .. Well, if I have to recommend something to you, then yes, install Debian Testing ..

I would recommend Debian Sid, although it has the title of unstable it is not at all; it is more a disro rolling release (of course with the Debian peculiarities) that allows you a lot of play. And by the way, Debian testing back in the day gave me more trouble than Sid.

        PS Debian Sid is immortal

elav I don't remember where I read it, but I think they want to port pantheon shell for debian 🙂

        1.    elav said

It is that with KDE .. I have already reached the ceiling .. I don't want to know about Gnome, nor about its Shells 🙁

          1.    vicky said

In the end you went to the side of kde, you who were so much of xfce XD
Also I used both kde (in chakra) and pantheon shell in ubuntu.
If they port it to debian I can't imagine how light it will be since in Ubuntu it flies and consumes very few resources 😀

As the song Chains says, my baby's got me locked up in chains. I installed Elementary but after a while I already missed my KDE so back to Manjaro and KDE 🙂

O_O SACRILEJIO !!!! HOW DARE YOU TALK SO ABOUT ARCH !!!
hahahaha, well, really, the truth is elementary OS is good, I had a similar configuration on my desktop with archlinux, but using xfce + plank, now I only leave a single panel (in the long run those modifications kind of bore me: /)
As for the wifi I could not tell you anything, on my desktop with arch I use wired internet, on my laptop (also with archlinux) the driver worked from one (it is an atheros card) just install the wicd and and the common tools that they name in the wiki (wireless_tools, iw, wpa_supplicant), my router has a wpa2-psk password and everything works normal.

by the way, the first thing that is in capital letters IS IN TONE OF JOKE. it is clear n_ñ

    3.    msx said

In Arch use the netcfg profiles and you will not have any problem with setting up wireless ... you can even use wifi-menu with what will show you a menu in Ncurses with the available networks that you will be able to configure, enter the pwd , etc. and the application will generate a new profile ready to use and marked as the default profile 😉

Oo really when you talked about KDE Elementary style I thought it practically impossible. This demonstrates the flexibility of the best Linux desktop environment. I wait for the tutor ...

      😀 I hope I can put it 100%

: O What a job! elav is looking great on you.

What is the dock you are using? Docky? Does Docky work in KDE? Or is it a skin for Daisy or another that I don't know?

    1.    elav said

I am using the ElementaryOS Dock: Plank ..

Honestly, the desktop is very good for you, kde is good and I like it, but what I don't like is that all the applications with K hahaha it's ironic but I'll stick with Xfce for now.

    1.    I have said

That is not so true anymore, here are a few that no longer carry K: Calligra, Gwenview, Marble, Dolphin, Blogilo, Quassel, Owncloud, Telepathy

      1.    msx said

        And Calligra !? XD

@elav: I'm interested in "the other details"!
For example: what skin do you use?

Too bad that copying elementary is going to be difficult, it's too good!
Yesterday I installed it for my sister on her lap and after configuring it and leaving the Ubuntu underneath running accordingly (laptop-mode-tools, cpufreq, acpid, enable shared printers, install mDNS for Avahi, install samba so that it has maximum compatibility away from home, install Chromium, LibreOffice and some other things) I seriously thought about replacing my Arch + KDE 4.9.3 with that marvel ... luckily the fever passed, I remembered that underneath there is an Ubuntu 12.04 with prehistoric apps (LO 3.5.3 , GIMP 2.6 !!, apt-get !!!) and ran back to kiss my xD machine

Now seriously, elementary OS is a luxury, these kids went to hell, that distro is going to explode!
I recommend checking the Journal page to discover the keyboard shortcuts that make it much more comfortable to use.
Also, whether you use elementary or any new Ubuntu, check out point 1a of this Linux Mint forum post:
    http://forum.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=86813&hilit=tips+and+tricks
for instructions on how to make "Startup Applications" show all the applications that it used to show again and in the latest versions of Ubuntu they decided to hide 😛
If you also want the user icon to show the name of the logged in user (it makes the system more personal, especially for non-technical users) use this command:

To re-enable the username on Unity panel, in terminal:
    gsettings set com.canonical.indicator.session show-real-name-on-panel true
To disable, simply change true to false:
    gsettings set com.canonical.indicator.session show-real-name-on-panel false

The full entry can be found on AskUbuntu.

Elementary Os is brutal. I would like there to be a version for other distros. Pantheon Shell and Archlinux together would be great. I have ubuntu and chakra installed. The ppa help a lot the truth but sometimes the machine goes to hell 😛

      1.    msx said

PPAs are a nightmare, actually one of the main reasons I ran away from Ubuntu!

Dependency problems, old software, a whole issue when updating between Ubuntu versions ... no thanks, the further away from the PPAs the better!

There are bzr versions of scratch (so called, no?), File, noise, plank and I even seemed to see pantheon among them in Aur, you just have to play a little with pkgbuild, I installed a couple in openbox, but its appearance was a bit rough, I wonder if installing gnome or xfce would look better? if someone manages to put arch + pantheon to let me know that I install gnome running ^^

Is there anything that cannot be done with Plasma? Amazing. Regarding monochrome icons, they have just started adapting a set called Font Awesome, which was made for the web but will now also be used in KDE, but I don't know when it will be ready.
    Greetings.

Hey Elav, where did you get the fund from ???

  8.   peterczech said

    Hi Elav,

Your KDE looks great, but I have a question .. Bearing in mind that you are leaving it very Gnome-like and very nautilus in terms of the configuration that you leave in dolphin, why don't you install gnome-fallback testing in your Debian and remove the bottom bar replacing it with the dock?

Greetings and I congratulate you on your posts,
    PeterCzech

      Greetings Petercheco:
It is very simple. I love the look and feel of Gtk applications, but the power and level of customization of KDE applications. It's not about how pretty or ugly in this case, but about options that your tools give me.

      1.    PeterCzech said

Thank you very much Elav for the answer… Interesting 🙂

You're welcome. Believe me when I tell you that in Gnome I feel like in Windows, tied hand and foot. A simple example, something we use often is the text editor, right? Well, I would like Gedit for one day to reach Kwrite's ankles, not to mention Kate. 😀
