What is NeoChat?

In its own section within the official website of KDE Project applications, this useful application is briefly described as follows:

NeoChat is a client for Matrix, the decentralized communications protocol for instant messaging. It allows you to send text messages, videos and sound files to your family, co-workers and friends. It uses the KDE infrastructure and in particular Kirigami to provide a converged experience across many platforms.

What is NeoChat?

While, in his official section within KDE GitHub, they add that NeoChat also makes use of other KDE frameworks, such as libQuotient, which is a Qt-based SDK for the Matrix protocol.

Furthermore, NeoChat supports everything in the current stable specification of said protocol, except for the notable exceptions of VoIP, threading, and some end-to-end encryption features. And, a few less important omissions due to the fact that the Matrix specification is constantly evolving. However, NeoChat also allows numerous unstable features, such as using Polls, Stickers, and Location Events.

How is it used and is its current user interface?

Once installed via terminal in the usual way for each one and from our own repositories with the corresponding and preferred CLI/GUI package manager, or via Flatpak o Snap, we just have to execute it. And once it is open, we log in with our Matrix network user data so we can navigate its interface, and explore and join various Linux communities in Matrix.

Matrix It is an open standard for interoperable and decentralized communications. It is friendly with recent technologies and, above all, it is very flexible to communicate with other old and new protocols (currently it is 100% compatible with XMPP and IRC, but also with Slack, Skype and Lync). The idea is the same: a standard that can be implemented by anyone and that allows communication even if your server or service is different from mine.
