Conectar Igualdad netbooks will have a new Linux distro made in Argentina

According to a note published in the morning page Página12, Silvina Gvirtz, executive director of Conectar Igualdad, affirmed that in 2013 it will be available Huayra GNU / Linux for 2013 in the netbooks de Connect equality and that this operating system will be the one that will boot "by default". The announcement took place at the International Free Software Conference that took place at the National Library.

In case you were wondering, Huayra is based on Debian, just like Ubuntu.

The maintenance of the distribution will be in charge of Cenital (National Center for Research and Development of Free Technologies), whose president is Javier Castrillo, secretary general of Free Software with CFK and twitterer under the nickname @evitalinuxera. The task of this body will be to maintain the updates and documentation of the operating system, manage the application repository and make Huayra respond to the needs of the Educ.ar portal.

“The default option of the operating system is going to change to Huayra. Working with free software operating systems provides greater opportunities for learning. However, in both systems, most of the applications are free software ", indicated Silvina Gvirtz according to Página12, who argued that Hayra's objective is the" creation of a free operating system with national identity, which favors technological autonomy and establishes own security and development standards ”.

Huayra will be installed in next year's notebooks, which will have a faster processor and a Digital Television decoder, to be able to see up to 35 signals available to date.

Meanwhile, you can test this operating system by downloading it for free from

Note that all machines will continue to come with win7. Only that the grubdefault is going to be Linux and not win7 as before. That as point 1, point 2, 99% of secondary school teachers do not know anything about Linux, so they will continue to use win7 as before.

Indeed, this is not at all enough to end the problem of proprietary software in schools and in the state, but it is certainly an essential starting point.
Informing teachers and removing Win7 may well be the next step.
You have to go for that.

Indeed, this is of the utmost importance. Nowadays, the only reason why GNU / Linux distributions are not the standard in Operating Systems is because by default the machines come with Güindors pre-installed (differences in ease of use are a thing of the past), and nobody -except for those who are already on the subject- distributes and installs an OS of their choice (in fact, most of the people are not even aware that Güin is just 'an' OS and they think it is 'la compu',!). Machines that come with GNU / Linux pre-installed is probably the most effective measure that can be taken to end the infamy of proprietary software once and for all.
    Regards!

bieeeeeen !!! finally a goodeeeeee !! This they should have done from the start. GNU / Linux makes its way into education. The public administration must also adopt it. Closer and closer!
P / D: the acronym of the national research center sounds like Genital to me ...
