New version of Chakra (2015.03 Euler), now with UEFI support

About Chakra

We haven't talked about Chakra here on the blog. A distro that has many followers, and no wonder. It is a distro that started as a daughter of Arch, but currently its repos are not compatible, so they use repos that are not ArchLinux's. With a neat appearance and focused on KDE ... that is:

  • KDE-centric
  • It is similar to ArchLinux
  • Really friendly installation

You see why it has many followers right? 😀

The Positive of Chakra (2015.03 Euler)

The detail of the new version (Chakra 2015.03 Euler) is that it already supports (officially, without many complications) UEFI.

This new version brings us news, although it still lacks several details ... it is getting updated with package versions, hardware support, etc:

  • Calligra 2.9.0Although I don't use LibreOffice or any other much (I work more with plain text), I think it's time to give it a try again.
  • Linux kernel 3.18.3 inside
  • The typical updates for Nvidia, AMD accompanied by xorg-server 1.16.4
  • KDE-Workspace version 4.11.16 plus, 4.14.5
  • KDE Frameworks version 5.7
  • Updated version of rekonq (default browser)
  • Caledonia of artwork
  • Support for UEFI, although it does not yet (officially) support GPT, RAID or LVM

This is the most significant that we can find in this new version, for a complete list of the changes visit the following link: Chakra News

The Negative of Chakra (2015.03 Euler)

Perhaps the word "negative" is not the most appropriate or the fairest, but it is undoubtedly an aspect that users ask for more and more, but still nothing.

  • Still NOTHING of plasma 5.

While ArchLinux is a rolling release distro With all the letters, Chakra is not, it is considered half-rolling because it does not always have the latest version of the packages, since they estimate that stability is sometimes first than having the most updated version of the applications.

The reality is that Plasma 5 is still something, something unstable ... it has bugs and it is something logical, but hey ... the user associates Chakra with Arch, and seeing that in Arch it is already (for a long time) Plasma 5, I do not find completely crazy that This version of Chakra would have surprised us in this regard.

The end!

Well nothing, to enjoy the new version of Chakra 😉

I only tried Chakra once, but I don't remember if I liked it or not, ha.
Any daughter or daughter distro that cut ties with their mother Arch, is very well received 😀

From the first moment I felt very good with Chakra. Here I finish my search for the perfect distro for me because it has everything I am looking for.
Although many think that Chakra had a better past, from my point of view everything works perfectly. That it is Half-rolling gives me guarantees of having a stable but current system.
Plasma 5 will arrive when the time is right and will be well received by fans of this great distro

Nice, now I wanted to try it 😀
And I see that you have a large number of packages, well, the ones I need if they are 😀

        regards

Two or three years ago I installed Chakra on my laptop and I really liked it, but as in every KDE distro that I tried, at the slightest change in the configuration, the KWin would crash and had to be migrated again.

I'll see how Chakra is doing now on another laptop that I have with Debian and on the PC that I have with Solaris.

interesting all these arch-derived distros. manjaro, antergos and chakra among others! I think there is something for all tastes. a detail to take into account the "tribe" chakra installer lacks gpt, lvm and raid support.

chakra I don't like it comes overloaded with applications
although I never checked if you can do a minimal installation

Overloaded with applications? Please explain to me what that overload is because I don't see it anywhere.

      Overloaded with applications?

      1.    Sausl said

It has many applications that I do not use, I prefer to install them myself
that's why I like archlinux and debian netinstall or the same ubuntu from mini.iso
and be removing the applications one by one is not verbose

      2.    rober said

But being overloaded with applications is not the same as having applications that you don't use. I understand by an overloaded distro the one that has 3 web browsers, 3 video players, etc. by default.

I do not understand about removing applications one by one, in this distro you use pacman -R all the applications you want to remove.

The last time I tested it, it had other applications that fulfilled the same function
I don't know if they have corrected it
but it is not only with chakra, if not with linux mint, opensuse debian in its default installations and even kaos seems overloaded to me
It's more crazy than anything else but I can't say it's a bad distro

I see that old chakra to the future and it goes by kde 4.14.5.

Or would it be similar to Manjaro? use the same arch commands but nevertheless I will not have everything updated but will I have the last "stable" packages?

I was a user of Chakra for a long time, and it is, along with OpenSuse, the ones that best integrate KDE (in my humble opinion). Unfortunately, since Malcer left the project, along with other of its creators, it became somewhat difficult to update and lost that "something special" that surrounded him.

For one year I was a user of Chakra Linux. And I must say that I really liked its stable and fast.

However, because of my work I use various GTK-based programs. I had to opt for another distro. Well, although Charka Linux allows you to install these programs using the "extra" repository. Installation "at least for me" is not always so easy.

Far from it, I must say that Chakra Linux is a great distro with KDE. So if anyone wants an Arch Linux derived distro. Make it powerful and easy to install. Then Chakra Linux is a great option.
