Nova, the GNU / Linux distribution made in Cuba

Nova is a GNU / Linux distribution created by the Informatic science University (ICU) in Cuba. This form of distribution is established under the platform of free software and open source, which tries to make the Cuban country independent from the acquisition of software with paid licenses. Being more specific, the main idea was to develop a distribution compatible with the software used at the university (UCI); For this reason, those who administer, maintain, provide technical support and offer nova updates, are its developers in the UCI. As this project develops, the idea is born of expanding this distribution throughout the country, to implement in the Cuban population the use of an operating system that gives Cuba independence in terms of information technology. Focused on the inexperienced user in free software, which although they may have ignorance at the computer level, or who have only worked with paid software licenses and want to use a free or open source system for the first time, providing an equally effective alternative, in similar parameters and simpler than other distributions, so that the most inexperienced user becomes familiar with the system. It even offers a Windows graphical environment emulation, for those users who are more resistant to change. In addition, Nova, because it is a GNU / Linux distribution, can be improved not only by its developers, but also by its own users, who either wish to contribute some improvement in design, code or support.

Nova has the following versions:

  • Nova 1.1.2
  • Nova 2.1 Desktop Edition
  • Nova-2010
  • Nova 3.0
  • Nova 4.0

The latest version is currently in development, Nova 2015.

Within the development of the distribution, each time the control of the system requires the use of applications that, more specifically, work on the system's operation in a timely manner, which prevents the distribution from losing its personality as the functionality of the system expands. system. Among them we have:

  • serere (operating system installer): Currently under development. It is in charge of installing the system on the computer's hard drive. It can be used in two ways; in automatic and manual mode, with a considerable installation time short and simple. It seeks to expand its operation so that Nova can be installed on the network and external storage devices, as well as adhere to the nova package manager.
  • Summon (package manager): Born out of the desire to eliminate package management through source code. At birth, summon is appreciated with an interface written in Python + GTK, to give a simpler package management in the distribution. Its structure is quite simple, so that the user can update programs, install and uninstall them without any difficulty or prior knowledge on how to handle the application.
  • Control center: It is the face or presentation for the applications managed at the configuration and administration level. The center or control panel is required to manage and organize everything that the user wants to search on the computer. Nova created a single control center, which does not change with the modification of the interface, and which avoids confusion for the user. This control center is supported by KDE, XFCE and Gnome and seeks to be introduced in Ice Windows manager.
  • ecumenix: It is based on the integration of active directories, which allows the user to decide whether or not to delete nova on a computer that has a directory with Microsoft. This software seeks to adhere to the use of mixed environments, that is, the use of different technologies but that can be compatible on the same computer for the user's convenience.
  • Capoeira: It has the function of being able to share folders applying the Samba implications; a file sharing system without protocol measures between Linux and Windows platform. Capoeria partners with Ecumenix to provide commonly used functions on a Windows system. Thus, the exchange of information between two systems improves data migration when the user needs it.
  • Guano: It is a lightweight desktop environment made for machines with little RAM. All thinking about the difficult acquisition that the Cuban community still has to acquire powerful computers in memory or that can withstand very heavy software updates. With basic functions for improve functionality of operations, made under a simple structure for easy user management.

How tired is this of distributions ...

    1.    Adolfo Rojas G. said

Yes, it's already annoying. Every day more distributions and more and more and more; and all almost the same ...
      Nothing like the mother distros!

    2.    pepper said

I am tired of comments that find the work of others all bad.

      It is like a sport.

      1.    jorss said

I agree and it bothers that type of comment about the distros instead of that to encourage people to program applications for those distros and gnu / linux in general

The best is the name of the xD desktop environment.

In this case, Guano refers to this: https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coccothrinax that was used and is used to build rustic houses in many parts of Cuba

This distribution is the old one from 2013 and it is the same with the same.

In the new version of 2015, important changes are noticed, but I don't know why it cannot be downloaded from outside of Cuba.

    1.    Raphael Castro said

It cannot be downloaded inside or outside of Cuba. Everything is done in secret within the misnamed University of Informatics Sciences.

There is an economic blockade of a certain country towards Cuba that prevents everyone else from trading with it and providing inputs for telecommunications.

      2.    Raphael Castro said

Pepe, if there is an Economic Garnishment, it is true. But that would not prevent the country's Intranet from growing and resources could be acquired more easily. I tell you more, there is an "underground" type network in Cuba that extends for hundreds of kilometers throughout Cuba, made "illegally" by Cubans without many resources. Cuba trades with the whole world and acquires everything that you cannot imagine, all you need is to have money.

        Greetings.

Rare. I was able to download from a mirror that they have on the page.

      1.    Raphael Castro said

Jorgicio, could you please share the link you used to download it? I have dealt with the links they have on the website and they all fail.

        Thank you

I find it strange and surprising that they do not have 64-bit versions. Only for 32. Why? 🙁

    1.    Alexander TorMar said

It is surely because in Cuba there are no computers with x64 architecture ... Just look at the vehicles that you see there, now imagine the PCs that Cubans have to use

      1.    Raphael Castro said

In Cuba there are computers of all types of architecture, with a large enough black market to buy almost any last generation device. Some are legal, others not so. The same thing happens with cars, old and new all rolling on the same streets.

The reason why Nova doesn't support x64 architecture I don't know, but it's not due to a lack of hardware. Of course, many schools and government institutions have equipment with more than 10 years of exploitation.

Very interesting. But one question: how do you do the updates, because in Cuba there is a significant problem of Internet connection.

    1.    Adolfo Rojas G. said

Well, a few days ago I spoke with a Cuban who was visiting my country and from what he tells me, the packages are passed through pen drives or disks sold pirated.
And apparently although the internet is bad, it can be accessed.

    2.    Raphael Castro said

Jose Luis, many things are copied through the package, others through hand-to-hand portable devices. There are also several Intranets that distribute content between health and education institutions.

If you are interested in knowing more about the famous Cuban package, here it is:

Linux Developers… or better said distro tuners… instead of wasting time renaming and changing the desktop background to other distributions. because they don't start creating applications or improving existing applications… .with that they can gain more users for Linux.

    1.    gustavo said

      Well, I think the same.

IT IS THAT YOU ARE VERY BAD NAVIGATING THROUGH THE SITES IN CUBA, I AM CUBAN AND I DOWNLOADED IT FROM QATAR VISIT THIS PAGE http://humanos.uci.cu/nova/ OR THIS LINK http://mirror.cedia.org.ec/nova-images/nova-escritorio-2013-i686-final.iso THE PROBLEM IS THAT IN CUBA THE SERVERS HAVE A FILTER TO BLOCK THE PORN PAGES AND THAT'S WHY THEY DO NOT LET YOU ENTER THE NATIONAL WEBSITE IT IS ONLY A QUESTION TO KNOW HOW TO SEARCH

I never got to use it because if there is something that the government of this country likes, it is espionage and it is known that this university responds 100% to the military interests of this country
