Open MCT, NASA's framework for mission operations data visualization

The United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration recently released the publication of an update of its open source framework «Open MCT 1.8.2 ″ (Open Mission Control Technologies), which is designed to visualize the data received during the collection of telemetry from various sensors and information sources.

The web interface is created using adaptive design methods and can be used on both stationary computers and mobile devices.

About Open MCT

Open MCT (Open Mission Control Technologies) is a next-generation mission control framework for data visualization on mobile and desktop devices. It was developed at NASA's Ames Research Center and is being used by NASA for spacecraft mission data analysis, as well as for planning and operating experimental rover systems.

As a generalizable and open source framework, Open MCT could be used as a basis for creating applications for planning, operation and analysis of any system that produces telemetry data.

OpenMCT allows in a consolidated interface to show incoming and already received data streams (history analysis), evaluate the status of the sensors, display camera images, navigate through events using a timeline, view any information, use different telemetry views (tables, graphs, diagrams, etc.).

The operator you can quickly switch between different data processors and views, resize areas, arrange your own views in the visual editor, move items in drag-and-drop mode. The platform is very flexible and with the help of plugins it can be adapted for different applications, forms of information presentation, types and sources of data.

At NASA mission control centers, the platform is used for visual analysis of mission parameters associated with launching spacecraft, as well as planning and controlling experimental rovers.

For the community, Open MCT can be useful in any application related to the monitoring, planning, analysis and follow-up of the operation of the systems that generate telemetry data. For exampleor, Open MCT can be used to monitor IoT devices, servers and computer networks, monitor the status of drones, robots and various medical systems, visualize business data, etc.

Of the characteristics that stand out:

  • Open MCT is currently in use to support multiple missions at NASA.
  • It is used to support the development of lunar rover mission concepts.
  • It provides integrated situational awareness, health monitoring, and telemetry visualization to many segments of mobile mission teams.
  • It can be adapted for the planning and operation of any system that produces telemetry.
  • You can display real-time and historical data, images, timelines, how-tos, and other data visualizations in one place.
  • Computer and network performance monitoring, business data visualization and process control monitoring

About the new version of Open MCT 1.8.2

In this new version it is highlighted that time context switching removed from views, Besides that fixed bugs in 'Export as JSON' resulting in corrupted data. "

Testing and maintenance replaced all remaining usage of the legacy dialog service in / src /. Changes were also made to the object's API for Transaction Needs Test Specifications, as well as new Transaction APIs Needs Severity Test specs.

The mct-template component has been removed, as well as the tests of the npm scripts and the error in the
"My Articles" interceptor test

Finally for those interested in knowing more about it, you should know that the code is written in JavaScript (the server side is based on Node.js) and it is distributed under the Apache 2.0 license.

You can consult the installation instructions, as well as the user manual of this framework this link.
