openSUSE Tumbleweed

Douglas DeMaio of the openSUSE Project reports that the latest update of openSUSE Tumbleweed now runs under the latest Linux Kernel 4.18 and received the latest in free software.

Although we are in a holiday season for many of the developers, openSUSE Tumbleweed continues to receive many updates and this week it received a major boost in the kernel with the arrival of the recent Linux Kernel 4.18 which is packed with many features.

"The latest build, 20180818, brought the kernel to version 4.18.0, with many changes for the KVM, ”Says DeMaio.

Support for AV1 codec, the latest in free software

Aside from the arrival of Linux Kernel 4.18, a major goal for openSUSE Tumbleweed that so far only a few distributions have managed to achieve, the operating system also received support for the super efficient video codec AOMedia Video 1 (AV1) thanks to the FFMpeg 4.0.2 update.

Other updated packages that recently hit the openSUSE Tumbleweed repositories include the browser Mozilla Firefox 61.0.2, the HTTP client / server library for GNOME libsoup 2.62.3, Xen 4.11.0 hypervisor, QEMU 2.12.1 virtualization software, Krusader 2.7.1 file manager, and btrfsprogs 4.17.1 system manager.

The new packages are also worth mentioning ImageMagick 7.0.8.9, Strace 4.24, yast2-http-server 4.1.1 and yast2-storage-ng 4.1.4, so if you are using openSUSE Tumbleweed on your personal computer it is recommended to update to receive the packages mentioned above with the features and improvements it brings.

You can download and install openSUSE Tumbleweed from the Official Site, remember that this distribution is of the type rolling release, so it will be continuously updated.
