PeerTube 3.2 comes with a notable redesign, enhancements, and more

Few days ago the launch of the new version of the decentralized platform for organizing video hosting and video streaming "PeerTube 3.2" in which the redesign of the platform stands out, since an already notable separation of channels and accounts has been made, as well as the resumption of video playback, among other things.

For those who are unfamiliar with PeerTube, they should know that this offers a vendor-independent alternative to YouTube, Dailymotion, and Vimeo, using a content distribution network based on P2P communications and linking visitors' browsers.

PeerTube is based on the use of a BitTorrent client, WebTorrent, which runs in a browser and uses technology WebRTC to organize a P2P communication channel cross-browser direct, and the ActivityPub protocol, which allows disparate video servers to be combined into a common federated network, in which visitors participate in content delivery and have the ability to subscribe to channels and receive notifications about new videos.

Today, there are more than 900 servers to host content, supported by various volunteers and organizations. If the user is not satisfied with the rules for posting videos to a specific PeerTube server, they can connect to another server or start their own server.

Main new features of PeerTube 3.2

In this new version of PeerTube 3.2, one of the novelties that stands out is that theThe interface has been redesigned for a more noticeable separation of channels and accounts. And it is that with this change for example, so that the user can immediately understand that he is on the channel page and not on the user's page.

Channel avatars are now displayed as a square, and user avatars are now displayed in a circle to avoid confusion between channels and their owners' accounts, plus a block with information about the owner has been added on the right side of the channel pages, clicking on it displays a page with a list of the user's channels.

The layout of the channel pages has also been optimized to separate the different channels more prominently, with the option to pin them to the top of the channel-specific banner and support button. In video thumbnails, the channel is displayed first and the video thumbnail size increases by one third.

Another important change that stands out is that from this new version for users who are not logged in, there is now support available to automatically resume playback from an interrupted position.

Also, in the video viewer embedded in the page, the context menu has been expanded, which is displayed when right-clicking the mouse. For example, small explanatory icons and a statistics block with technical information for advanced users have been added.

On the other hand, it is also mentioned that PeerTube's video upload interface has been redesignedas now the download may be interrupted, for example due to an interruption in the internet connection and resume after a while.

Of the other changes that stand out in this new version:

  • The default video download settings have been changed, when you click the "Download" button, the direct file transfer process now starts, and not the direction to download the torrent.
  • The interface has added the ability to sort the videos uploaded by the user by criteria such as publication date, number of visits and duration.
  • Added notification to admins that a new version of PeerTube is available and plugin updates.
  • There's a new 'nerd stats' item that displays, as the name suggests, technical information that only the most experienced geeks will understand;)
