Personal opinions about LMDE Update Packs 5, 6 and 7

Optimizing LMDE

No sir. I didn't have the wrong number. This post is not about this Update Pack that came out recently and that many still try to install. I have had problems installing it (not only the long delay but some packages like gconf and some packages from xserver-xorg broke) but I already solved them and I have it whole. This post is about the Update Packs that will come (if they will). And it's not about what things they are going to have or when they are going to come out. But I have to highlight a fact that is coming soon and that will greatly affect the Update Packs to come.

Between July and August of this year, the testing branch will be frozen. Those of Debian They will freeze the branch to correct errors and thus build what will be version 7, also known as debian wheezy. It will be 6 long months until the beginning of 2013 in which no package from the Sid branch will be able to enter Testing …………… ..six long months without updates What do you think?. Many complained that LMDE was asleep. Now it's going to be Debian mom who is going to rest.

And to think that the cooling of Testing was one of the causes of why Update Packs arose. When LMDE emerged in late 2010, Testing was frozen. Imagine the amount of updates you received when Debian Squeeze came out in March 2011, and Testing froze and lots of packages started arriving from Sid …………………… there was a high chance that your system would crash. If today you complain about having 800 megabytes to update, I inform you that next year will be worse, EVEN IF YOU ARE TARGETING THE TESTING BRANCH. And that's how the update packs were born in July 2011 to provide greater stability. Not as stable as Debian, but stable as Ubuntu can be.

As for the Update Packs to come, I'm sure one of them will occur during cooldown. I doubt I'll get any packages from Sid, but I think it's going to come during the freeze. I would suggest to Clem that the 5th pack comes before cooling (by june) so that when the 6th comes (that could come out in full freeze, let's put October or November) let's have at least something new (even if it's not much). And finally package 7 is going to be the colossal one because it should come out after freezing.

It is done. Those are my opinions. During the freeze, if you want you can point to the unstable repository to have the latest, but be very careful that the movement of packages is much faster.

Well, it seems so ... hehe I also find burjans strange. Not because I published in another blog (it would be missing more) but because I did exactly the same article. !?

I realized because I follow both Blogs by RSS and knew that I had read the article before.

Let's see. Keep in mind that LMDE never have been rolling release, for more than the boys of Linux Mint say yes it is. Maybe if it was based on Sid o Experimental things change, but do not expect the same to happen with Testing.

We cannot lose sight of the goal of Debian It is not being Rolling, but rather that it goes through the various branches of development to arrive at a version Stable for use in Production Environments. Whoever wants an updated distro, can try it with others of the many there are, because with Debian it will not be so.

Interesting information, the truth is that I have gone to debian testing for the wine whose version I did not update and I ended up installing from a deb package. I hope that wheezy will be stable soon to stay with this system that I have now, I really need the versions that I have now and for university reasons that force you to use windows software I have to have microsoft office 2007 on debian. Many will ask it is not easier to have dual boot. Well, the truth is that no, if I use wine only for the office, I will not have virus problems and to be honest it is easier to install and configure debian than windows xp, vista or 7, it is tedious to look for a good and free antivirus and even more tedious to hack the windows.

I understand what you are saying and the truth is that indeed it is very likely that as soon as testing comes out of the freeze and the sid packages enter suddenly the system will crash.
What it seems that many do not quite understand or prefer to ignore is that the testing branch is precisely that a trial version.Testing is focused on developers and users willing to use the system knowing that it carries a certain risk and can report bugs. Debian branches were made based on a good stable version.
I don't know what to think about LMDE…. What they do with this distribution seems a bit redundant.

I have the same opinion! .. but then I open the following question:

      - And the branch Sid ?

you say that users do not quite understand that the branch tests only for test .. Then what's left of the Sid branch? What is it for then?

          On the page it says:

This can result in a very unstable system as it contains packages that cannot be installed due to missing libraries and dependencies that cannot be met, etc. Use it at your own risk!

But Ubuntu / mint is made from that branch and is not unstable. Explain that to me?

ahahaha No no quiet broder 😉 I was saying it at stake .. I really don't know what to say, there are people who are in the sid branch and say that they are doing great .. there are people who are in the experimental branch or «package deposit »As it is commonly known, I mean Ubuntu / mint as I do and we are doing well ..
