PhotoQT: A lightweight photo viewer with many options

I met him through Webupd8 and I immediately installed it in Arch Linux. PhotoQT It is an image viewer that, despite being light, can be considered very advanced due to the number of options it has.

PhotoQT

I'm just testing it and I already have it set as the default image viewer. But yes, it is still in development and is not recommended for production use.

PhotoQT_Intro

PhotoQT gives us the ability to view a number of incredible image formats, you just have to go to the options and take a look.

By the way, the Preferences menu is a bit off the top right of the screen. They have to look for it with the mouse because at first glance I can't be seen.

PhotoQT_Options1

With the right click we can access a series of options such as Rotate the image, enlarge it, or open it with another program.

PhotoQT_Options

Unfortunately the Spanish translation is not complete. We can select the options in the Preferencesas well as customizing and configuring application behavior, thumbnails, effects, changing full screen mode, and many other features.

PhotoQT_Settings

Talk about all the possibilities and options you have PhotoQT Right now it is impossible for me, so I just invite you to download the application in your favorite distribution and try it. You can see the options of Installation en this page.

I repeat, you still have options and features that do not work

Users Arch Linux they just have to install it from AUR:

$ yaourt -S photoqt

or by downloading the TarBall and creating the package with pkg (I did so).

Users Ubuntu can use a PPA:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa: samrog131 / ppa sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install photoqt

Debian It has versions for 32 and 64 Bit.

PhotoQT 32 Bit
PhotoQT 64 Bit

And so on they will find packages for Fedora, openSUSE, Mageia, Pink Linux, Mandriva.. etc

If you want a light image viewer and in qt I recommend Qiviewer

Light and short on options I imagine. Or am I wrong? 😉

I saw this one a long time ago, I don't remember I had so many options actually O_O.

    yaourt? ... uff, I don't have it installed ^ - ^ U

    1.    elav said

Needless. First because I have the package to install with Pacman and second, because you can install it with Makepkg.

In my case, as I'm on Debian, I don't use the PPA but I manually add the Launchpad repos with the public keys. I know that feels, bro.

In Debian Wheezy it doesn't work 🙁
I have installed the 32-bit package with dkpg -i, it installs correctly, but now it won't open, it keeps thinking and it won't open or anything.

I forgot to say thank you for sharing elav 😉

You're welcome .. Mmm, how weird. I will have to try here on the PC that I have with Debian.

          here is the error:

photoqt: error while loading shared libraries: libGraphicsMagick ++. so.3: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

          could it be solved?

You definitely have something to install. I'll try Debian later and I'll tell you if the same thing happens to me.

          2.    Outdated said

            Ok that's it! 😀
Just install the libgraphicsmagick ++ 3 package from the Debian repositories

            apt-get install libgraphicsmagick ++ 3

            Thanks greetings!!

What a good program, at first I liked it but I was not convinced by the full screen mode. Now I have set it to start in window mode as elav says and it is perfect: D. This Photoqt suits my needs much more than the Gwenview 😛

    Thank you,
    Health!

And I say, without the intention of offending but as a constructive criticism, that if you don't tell me some of the »possibilities and options that PhotoQT has», why should I bother to download, install and learn about this software? You have to awaken the enthusiasm of the reader a little more, man 😉

    1.    elav said

My intention was not to excite the reader, but to show that the application exists and some of its benefits .. Nothing more. Anyway I accept the criticism willingly. 😉

    2.    Outdated said

If trying new software bothers you, it may be that you have no interest because you are comfortable with what you already have. The entry could be more extended to create more interest, although I for example if I was excited to see it because gwenview had not finished convincing me and I wanted to try something new. Question of interest I think.

Even so, knowing the program recommended by colleague elav is as easy as doing «3 clicks», it is not so annoying: S

      A greeting.

      1.    xykyz said

Well, when I say "bother", I mean a bit of everything: install it, test it, uninstall it if I don't like it or uninstall what I used previously if I like it. All this takes its process and time, which is wasted time if in the end the software did not fit the needs it had.

On the other hand, I am sufficiently satisfied with Gwenview, so in principle I do not need to try it, but if the characteristics of the program are explained a bit, it may call me more attention and try it, because conforming is bad, for example, lately I am not satisfied with some articles and I give suggestions for improvement.

What I don't know is why some of you try to squash these suggestions with your comments, commenting that "it's a matter of interest" or that you "search for it on google", when my suggestions are aimed at attracting more readers by improving the quality of the articles. For linux novices, articles that explain what certain programs are for and what main features they have will always be more attractive than articles that only explain how they are installed ...

I suppose that is my opinion and in any case, elav specifically did not need the comment because when he wants / can he elaborates well on his articles, such as the one on "brackets vs sublimetext3" a few days ago, but there are other editors to the ones that maybe they need the most.

        All the best

        1.    Outdated said

Well, I just gave my opinion the same as you gave yours. For my taste the entry is fine, it could be better, it is true, although in my opinion I prefer that a blog writer teach software in a concise way than not teach it so as not to bother to do an extended review for whatever reasons.

In any case, I'm sorry if my comment bothered you.
          Health!

          1.    xykyz said

That is also true, rather than writing nothing, it is better to write concise. And don't worry, you already know that opinions are like asses, we all have one. As long as we respect each other's asses, no problem 😛

            Regards!

          2.    Outdated said

Hahaha well yes, that's what matters.

@offtopic: The conclusion (in general for any blog post) I think is: editors, if you can do an extended review, take your time and do it over low heat if you wish, so you will arouse more interest in your readers. If not, before not writing anything at least leave a brief review so that we know the subject 😛

            Thanks for sharing, greetings!

          3.    msx said

Saving the unhappy ass analogy (unless it's Jesica Cirio's, of course: http://goo.gl/esIbpt) the difference that THE ONLY OPINION THAT IS WORTH is the FOUNDED.

Everyone thinks from what _ it seems_ how things are (99% of people do not even perceive reality in a real, clean and objective way) and how _ they would like_ those things to be according to their personal desires and desires - that's why it is full of opinologists who speak so, so to the dope

That's why I like so much the technical discussion lists or misnamed "elitist" distristas like those of Arch, Gentoo or Slack, for example, because if you say shit based on you, you and you give a ball in the ortho and hardly have wish to go back.

Or as @AndreiLux (an Android kernel developer) clearly puts in his GIT:

            "Issues and solutions:

If you are not able to comprehensively formulate your issue in a detailed way and with a minimum amount of effort and common sense, you are not welcome and you should avoid using the tracker. This is not a support platform for me to respond to your every little problem.

An issue should contain: Description of the issue; environment and version on which it happens, and if applicable, when it doesn't; and a method of reproducing the problem. The topic shall be related to a technical issue of the kernel, and not a usability issue of your own.

If you cannot adhere to these simple guidelines, I'll simply ignore and close / delete your issues. »[0]

In the case of what you propose Xykyz, your position is absolutely logical and understandable but it is something that affects a part of the users since this type of posts does not bother us at all, what is more, we consider them technically well done.

What you are talking about is "usage policies" or posting. If you had a similar blog, you could well establish some specific posting policies, for example: "whenever you post on an application you have to make a minimum reference to it for those blog readers who do not know it."
That way the waters will be divided automatically and bloggers who agree to such conditions will post and others will simply follow along with a "fuck off !!!"

Other blogs are a bit more liberal, like this one, and that's wonderful because the Admins have decided to open a REALLY FREE space where, like AndreiLux above, the only thing they ask for is «[…] a minimum amount of effort and common sense […] »That is to say a minimum of effort and common sense and, as far as I know, they have very rarely censored any post or comment that they considered inappropriate.

So, Xykyz, in a blog like this, where the posting policies are more lax, it is totally perfect that there is a post like this one or like the one from Copy where, if I remember correctly, you made the same capricious baby tantrum.

            That's it man, cut it.

Some lazy people or because it didn't even occur to them to open a search engine - it happens very often - they will ask right here what it is.
Others with initiative will do a Ctrl + T -> photoqt -> at light speed -the speed that gives you the habit of using a web browser in 2013- and before even starting to moan for the post they will be checking for themselves the software website.
Others will start to kick the floor and look angry because things are not as they want.
Few others - luckily - will spend more energy breaking balls than moving on.
Some more will always find something to criticize.

            What group are you in?
If what you wanted was _suggest_ to adopt a better way of posting * your judgment * (and yours alone) than the one used, I think the message arrived a long time ago, you don't have to go on and on and on, you go to achieve the exact opposite - basic psychology.

Finally, and as a very well-known programmer read a few days ago in some corner of the sysadmin network (I don't remember which one): «Your opinion is worth nothing except for you; you are not a special being except for your mother. Don't break your balls and behave as you should, no one owes you anything or has to be patient with you. "

I cannot explain to you the satisfaction and tranquility that reading that phrase gave me and finding that in today's web there are still niches with people who use their head to think instead of just carrying it around because they have it attached to their neck.

          4.    xykyz said

            @msx «whimsical baby tantrum», «lazy» ...

If you are disrespectful, you don't deserve an answer.

          5.    elav said

Very well, we are cutting the roll and the discussions. I end the topic by saying the following:

Xykyz's suggestion is not bad, it is his opinion, but it is not always necessary or good, to chew things so much. I repeat, my interest was to show a little of what the application is about, the interest of each one to try it and see what it does, is individual.

This is how they educated me and this is how I have better learned to do things. If they give you everything in hand, you don't learn and, on the contrary, you lose interest in what's new.

It seems that an editor that I know, a Debian fan, is very happy with his Arch like a young nightjar leaping across the meadow.

This stubborn made us sweat but in the end there was so much lobbying that it ended up going to the dark side of GNU + Linux.

    Welcome!

For now, I am learning to navigate Arch in VirtualBox. For now, I plan to manage Parabola, a fork of Arch libre so as not to lose the spirit of free software that Debian gives me.

If everything works well for me and I can handle Arch left and right, I will install Parabola with Iceweasel and Flash Player (don't bother with the drivers, since my machine is 100% Intel chipset).

          Hahaha: '¬D

Now that I'm using eOS while I wait for the new Chakra ISO (we have to work while!) I realize how limited this new system is and I find some inconsistencies that do not close, specifically Gwenview vs. Shotwell vs. MirageIV vs. Ristretto vs. EOG:
In the left corner, wearing red pants we have Gwenview.
          - In Chakra or Arch (I presume that in Debian the same) Gwenview loads almost instantly the first time we run it and the subsequent times it loads instantly no matter how much we have the plugins installed. Gwenview is, without doubt, the most comprehensive image "viewer" or "mini-editor" on any platform. Not only can we close side and foot bars and deactivate plugins to use the application as a simple image viewer, but also, if we have a fairly current PC (my everyday machine is an i5 1stgen laptop, 480M CPU to 2,66 , 2500mhz, GPUS Intel 5000HD Ironlake -it's good but you can already tell that it is falling short- and ATi 6HD Madison -idem-, I bought the equipment almost two years ago and I suppose it would already have XNUMX months or a little more on the market) Some advanced editing features will be very useful to us: at least in my case I find myself doing more and more tasks that I used to do in GIMP with Gwenview in a very fast and practical way.

          On the other hand…
In the right corner wearing blue pants: Shotwell, Ristretto, MirageIV and EOG (the only viewers-mini image editors that I found for eOS / Ubuntu Precise (as if it were Street Fighter Alpha):
          - For starters, none of these applications allows CHANGING THE SIZE OF THE IMAGE WE ARE VIEWING, WTF !!!
Well, Mirage does have the option, hidden in a menu, with no keyboard shortcut.
But SHOTWELL DON'T HAVE IT, wtf! How can it be that such a complex and complete application does not allow you to change the fucking size of the image you are seeing? Yes you can crope it, reduce red eyes, automagically improve it and several other possibilities, but NO change the size. These guys are trolling me !!!
The same as Ristretto or Eye of Gnome: they allow you to rotate the image, flip it and do I don't know what other automagic tricks but not resize it ... WTF, they do it on purpose to laugh to death imagining my face when wanting to resize the image What am I seeing or why are they idiots and hide behind a "design decision"? Oh man ...

For worse, there is no option: Shotwell is what both eOS and Ubuntu ship as the default image viewer but none of the alternative applications allows to solve this TREMENDOUS USABILITY ERROR with the exception of Mirage, which, to be honest, we must be 4 or 5 we know the application and that is because we are unpleasant nerds who use Ubuntu in all its times and we remember that at some point Mirage came installed by default ...

Ah, I miss my KDE very much, no matter how loud and strong I put it, the power and simplicity of the applications and also the possibility of customizing the interface provided by the system is unmatched.

          -
